My suspicion is: Considering MA's (usual) lack of information, I think a pet above the currently max useful level (7?) is just a waste; MA will never implement anything for higher level pets, they just want their customers to give them "free money".

I don't think they have the funds. Seriously. CLD payouts have been consistently declining, and pretty much always 30%-50% below expectations. If a company gets 30%-50% less revenue than expected, I don't think there's much margin for buying back shares.
