Well, I guess I am not allowed to mention the name of the game where it happened, or maybe it was the links to other forums. My last post got deleted for one of those reasons. In any event...without giving specifics:

Have you read about the largest scam to occur in an MMORPG thus far? Some estimates say that the player got away with $170,000 worth of game money. He even admited to it in the forums.

Just wondering what you all think of that story, and how you think it might effect the gaming community in the future.

Well, 170k is a lot... never heard of the scam, but i think i will go do some research right now. Wouldn't imagine how that would affect a game like EU if it were to happen.

Its just another reminder for MA that someone-somewhere is trying to think of someway to rip them off !

Well... It's not MA that's in the most imminent danger...
But if I was ND I'd be careful :scared:

lets keep it simple and decend.

I HATE SCAMMERS!!!

they should all just get caught by the internet police or anything else
and locked up in jail.
like in EU, scamming is stealing.
and because EU has a real life economy with it.
you steal someone's real money!!!
I personally think that a crime and a crime means jail!!

anyone agree's with me?

Cute the guy even made a confession video and made fun of the entire community afterwards... hmmm

well as far as the whole make it a crime thing, that will never be an option because of MOST games eula's.. BUT the comment about this being real people made by TuFFKiD is a very important reason to NEVER rip someone off in a game, since you never know who would be involved.

Anyone anywhere admiting to ripping off countless strangers for such a huge sum is idiotic. Show respect to those you dont know.. cause you never know if someday they will be your boss :p

Can someone send me a pm with a link?

The company behind the game has said that they will compensate the victims IF he has broken any rules, wich they are not sure he has even done.

If they're really gonna compensate for the vicitims, will they recieve the amount they lost or what?

For everyone asking for links, just google 'mmorpg scam'.

The article I found says the 30 billion in-game currency was only USD $16,500. It's also not clear to me that this was even a scam, but its almost 3am and I can't be asked to read the whole article right now. :)

I have no idea. But I guess they will take back what he stole IF he did anything wrong.

My advice to any scammers is don't rip off anyone sounding like Mark 'Chopper' Read. Wish MA would employ him to sort out scammers.

Quote from the article I read:'

"...and fly off to space with an alleged total sum of 790 billion (insert gamename)-money. In real life, this would translate to \$170,000"

Haha nicely done by them. Ok not so nice to do to the society that got crushed but this is actually part of what <insert other game here> is about in a way. It is a war and what the guys was hired to do they did and they did it extremely well. This is not a scam it's part of the game. Sure that the stuff they took when they crushed the society was worth a shitload irl is sad to hear but it's still a part of the game.

And what made it happen was that the society started to trust people they shouldnt have trusted and thus after a year of hard work they reaped the benefits of their work and got their job they were hired to do done. :D

I played PE for quite long time before i left to other game which i cant mention i belive. And not long ago i read about scam in that game where one dude went away with 700 Billions of ingame money. In that game you are allowed to pay for game with in-game currency by buying from other ppl so called game time codes. So i will make little calculation to show how impressive 700Bil is - if he spent all money on game time codes he could pay for this game ahead for next 583 years. I belive something like Ponzi scheme was used there. A little more info to add - it is perfectly fine to scam in that game - its part of the game, there are few exceptions of course but this isnt one of them.

<removed link regarding other game scam>

aha it's more than one "scam" one is about 170k ingame currency and the other is about another sum and another way.. the one about 170k could be a scam i guess as it sounds a bit more like it, but the one i read about when they destroyed a society and all their belongings is not a scam. that was pure undercover war :D

Ah. It seems I found the wrong article. They stole 30B in game in the one I read, but it seems this is basically just part of the game.

WOW (exclamation of surprise, not a reference to another game, but feel free to edit).

Can I add that I do not understand why the links to the other game are being removed?

There's no DISCUSSION of the other game. In fact, all of this crap is quite similar to MA's marketing strategies. Heck, negative news about competing MMORPGS are probably celebrated at the MA-HQ.

Yes, there's a "no discussion of other games" rule. It's very "either you are with us, or you are against us", but it's there (something to think about: EF's competing forum recently ADDED another game to their inventory).

However, PE or not, we're all gamers, and crap like this is in everybody's interest. Gag it down all you want, but the more people read stuff like this, the better. Who cares if a competitor's name is in it? It's not as if <removed other game> is a RCE game.

I agree... Gaming scams are something that people should read... This could really happen here in EU also... So for tose of you not having luck finding this on the Internet... if someone wants to be a banker for you and loan you money and collect interest when you are in need... I'd stay away...

I actually used to run an in-game pawn shop. Didn't get too much clientele, due to most people suspecting I'd be ripping them off, but the few people who did use my services werequite satisfied.

I came up with the idea when I somehow found myself with a lot of PEDs, and knowing that at times one needs cash 'right now' but not having the means to do so.

Yeah I think that was the same article I read about a hostile takeover from within a very large society with some of the most well to do players. I think they ambushed the leader and took alot of stuff and destroyed items that are as rare and worth as much as some of our unique items. It did seem like it was part of the game and not an outright scam though.

Your idea is a good idea... and yes I have alot (too many lol)of those need money now times :) but you never know who you are giving stuff too...this guy played for a long time doing this and I am sure was respected and trusted by the community... I don't think everyone would do this, But I'm sure there are some thinking of grand master plans to rip people off... Good point...

yep true true the one ur talking about was kinda like this but in very short words...

the game is a big "war" between differetn factions and societies.

society a paid society b to infiltrate society c and kill them.

society b did infiltrate society c and got a few members in there, and one of them got very high up in the ranks. they tricked the leader to take big uber ship with shitload of stuff in it to a spot in the middle of nowhere without any backup and they was there waiting in an ambush. They so ended up with a shitload of stuff worth a shitload of credits and society c was crippled forever and lost just about everything they had and their implants they had to improve their characters where also ripped out of their chars so that was about 3 years of work on the chars just gone. But it took society b a year to make it happen :D

but it's like the coolest thing ever done in an mmpog :p

Player steals in game cash?

Not to dig up old dirt but...

EU had a person make off with 80k+30k markup = $11,000 and didnt make any waves in the news. But we wont name names...Just like MA wont comment

seems like a handy 'Great Game Scams' website could be setup, to describe details, and game... to educate people about the history, types of scam, and how common it is (or isn't) in various games.

Just not sure how to keep people remember such a site, after the initial release....something else would have to make it useful or interesting...otherwise, people's memories are too short to even remember the name of the site, when they want to add a report of a large scam.
