I think Participant Radio has a great potential to produce something i think commercial entertainment is lacking, Creative Freedom, The ability to focus on the listeners only, the people who count. I believe this is the future of entertainment, a great example why this is the future is what the comedian Tom Green is achieving, he has built a 100% Independent TV studio in his house broadcasting directly to his website, www.tomgreen.com, no sponsors to please, no executives to please. Just him and his fans paying a small subscription fee a month to cover all costs so he is able to what he wants to only please the people who count, his Fans, in radio's case our listeners.
I think we should work on the potential for it to be like this, no one to tell us what to do that doesn’t really care about the content, who only care about ratings and how many people see their adverts. Or Network Executives who only care about ratings and how much money it’s bringing in. Something Commercial TV and Radio Suffers from, all ideas are picked dry from every angle to please everyone and anyone. The fact is they should be focusing on their key market pleasing them, the people who watch/listen. If someone doesn’t like it they can watch/listen to something else. In return will allow more independent content to enter the spotlight, breaking away from the way commercial Radio Stations work who only play Bands that have received a record label, and at the end of the day there are loads of extremely talented people that don’t have any record labels that NEED outlets to get heard to get the treatment they deserve.
This is also a reason why i support more radio stations, allows the stations to specialise on a certain audience instead of attempting to please and attract everyone and anyone, as there is no need to get big ratings, just provide some awesome entertainment to the people who care, to cater for peoples interests in a way that everyone can enjoy, instead of every genre jam-packed together loosing the true passion that all music fans feel for the music they love.
I believe we should be following this example realising the true potential of what we have here working on our own terms with Rules the audience of that particular radio station fully agree with, always listening to their input and feedback. Pleasing them instead of compacting all genre's into one compressed mess attempting to please everyone at once. Which if you think about it, if everyone is different it’s a very hard thing to do, what you get out in return is highly filtered, watered down entertainment that doesn’t realise the true potential of each genre of entertainment individually.
And just to clarify no I’m not saying we should allow all explicit content to stupid levels where its a free for all mess, we should obviously abide by the basic morals, no discrimination of any kind, nothing racist no talking down to anyone or anything sexual. What I do personally think tho is commercial radio has entered a stupid level of censorship to the point where no swear words can slip in any songs or anything, to the point where they are fined for doing so. In a way its another Genre of kinds, there is a group of people that think moderate explicit content at levels that is not racist and all of the unacceptable things, I’m sure everyone knows what i mean, its got like that on commercial TV already where the occasional word is acceptable. For the people that don’t like anything explicit that is also another audience that can be catered for.
That is the potential i think Participant radio represents and is what it should be.
