Where do ppl get the idea that entropia universe has been classed as not a game? Now MA has said "It's more then a game". That statment does not say that its not a game just that it also something else in addition to being a game.
Now if someone has an other statment that I haven't heard please post it here so I know where you get this idea.

MindArk provides the Entropia Universe as a service, described as a virtual universe. The Entropia Universe is not a "game".

Both those dont exclude it from being a game. Providing a game that has a running VR with communication and safe monatary transactions is a service. But its still also a game. And a way of life could be a game too.

Quebecer that means that the EULA define Entropia Universe as the actual VR not the game that most ppl play in that VR. Still dont exclude it from being a game yust that the EULA tells you that the game is not the service you are accepting from MA its the VR.

I think the answer is, originally, MA in fact, didn't want to market the game we play as such... they wanted to separate EU as something different... when people say EU isn't a game, theyre just quoting the tone which MA staff has used in the past.

I think that now, the tone has changed since first planet company started...

Planet calypso IS being marketed as a game, while MA markets the EU "platform as something different

I think you are right. MA wanted to from the beginning to to sell Entropia as the platform which its becoming now. So yea the platform isent a game its a VR thats true, and not all planets are going to be games that has been explaned to me.
I hereby accept that Entropia Universe is not a game its a VR platform in which at the moment the only VR worlds that are part of it are games.

Thanks for the input, helped me define what is Entropia Universe and i shall stop calling it a game and start calling Planet Calypso a game in the Entropia Universe VR platform.

Entropia has gamelike aspects but it`s not a game. It`s a virtual universe with real money involved and some are making a living out of it. I know a few such people. Jena Mercury is one of them I believe.

Now some might say it`s a game for them as they play it as any other subscription based MMO 1-2h/day after work, depositing regular amount every month(10-20$) on average, teaming up , chatting basically doing same thing they would do in a regular online game. For them this could be a game in the normal sense of the word. Have no doubt about that. To many others however it`s much more than that.

Its just awesome :)

It's as much a game as; "What do you do for a living?" .. "I'm in the plumbing game!".
It is what you make it, however it is intended to be an alternate reality (virtual universe) and in that sense, it's as much a game as real life (in my personal opinion).

:)

Entropia universe is a platform Calypso is a game, Marco's words

it's a simple tongue-in-cheek quote that used to be on the client loader and is still in the eula that is used by participants as a funny cover-all to explain things, similarly to "it's dynamic" :)

Strange that it's not a game when the Cryengine two is called a "game engine"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_engine
A game engine is a software system designed for the creation and development of video games

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CryEngine_2
CryEngine2 is a game engine.

While wikipedia is not the authoritative source on all things... you get my point.

I understand what MA is saying though.

I think this covers it, in any aspect that applies to EU. Game is a very flexible term.
quote:
Defintion: Game

\ˈgām\

noun

Middle English, from Old English gamen; akin to Old High German gaman amusement

before 12th century

You can also try to see it from another angle (I am not even a psych or a statistician): I am quite sure that almost everything people do in the Entropia Universe, being Calypso or any future planets, is logged and can be researched on. So what people will do when we give x PEDs for free by sweating this and that mobs. How will people evolve when they gain more PEDs/deposit? They will stick to the same routine or they completely switch it.. and how many people do so.. How many scams are done? (I am quite sure there are ways for them to see some of this as well) If new planets gets introduced and you would be able to transfer your ava from one planet to the other.. what is causing this transfer? You are still doing the same as on your old planet or not? There are elements in EU that are quite realistic.

Maybe I make stuff too complicated, but if they would be able to do such things, then they could do some experiments and then it is rather a Virtual Reality/Universe than a game. But so far I didn't read any such thing, so for me it still feels like a game.. which is of course not a guarantee, as we surely don't know everything! :)

Regarding the CryEngine being a game engine.. no doubt it was built to be a game engine. But if they would use it to display/render real life cities so people are able to virtually travel to this city and explore it, would this automatically be called a game because the engine that would make it able to do so is or used to be a game engine? (Before I get comments on this: of course I am not saying that the particular engine would be usable for that or not, I am quite sure one day there will be such engine or a system that is able to do support the engine to do so)

And in the end.. we all enjoy the game of life, no? :) One day we lose, the other day we win.. that is life! ;)

interesting way of looking at it. the "platform", that is the login client, avatar and ped card is a service; the activities such as hunting, crafting are games within that service. kinda makes sence, owning an aptartment or LA isnt a game, but providing the interface for it is a service.

Entropia Universe is an online universe

Planet Calypso is a game, located in said universe

There is not simpler way to put it

The terms graphic engine or 3d engine are also used. Cryengine2 has be licensed by a few companies or entities that don`t make games and will use it for other purposes such as 3d learning platform, simulations etc.

"It's not a game" because

mmorpg + real cash economy = gambling = major legal issues for MA

its a game... im playing it.

exactly

Platform is another word for engine or enviroment and is created so that
MA can provide us a game,in which we participate.

To sum it up:
Entropia Universe (game in past) - becoms a platform soon.
First planet Calypso - is massive online game/ according to their recent promoting, but I liked the "more then a game" more,as it described EU better/

"Its not a game, it is a viutral universe" - Mindark

I't not a game.. It's an Addiction! :umn:

the planets are a game, the universe is a platform.

and its not gambling because:

In Sweden the government has a monopoly on gambling related activity. And they also have a agency with the task to inspect new companys on the market and ensure that there are no gambling involved.

And MindArk, beeing a company in sweden gothenburg, was made a visit by this agency. MA had to give them full insight in the system (such as the loots etc.) so that they could give them either thumbs up or down (in which case they would have to and their business).

And if this agency with all cards on the table decided that EU is NOT to be labelled as gambling, who are we to beg the differ?

The name of the agency is "lotteriinspektionen" (the lottery-inspection) for your information. Call them or email them and ask them yourself.

their site:

the only reason why it may seem like gambling to some, is because the game requires much more then just clicking on a mob to kill it. Its not for young kids who are ignorant in life and play mmo games with elves that shoot fireballs from their ass's to level up. Entropia requires you to understand the game, there is a dynamic system which you need to understand and to use it to play in a clever manner.

I think it's whatever point of vew in the eyes of different people.

A game for those who enjoy playing it.
A casino fro those who lost a lot of money and beleave that skills won't make A different on the loot.
A universe for those who likes to wander around.
A bussiness for those who make a profit from it.
A failure fro those who don't understand EU.
A scam for those who think MA is greedy.

So fill yourself in (please not another poll).
And for me, it has all those options :)

greetings,

bigdeal

The word 'Game' implies that there is an end. I haven't ever heard of a never ending game.

After a while, even if it started out as a game, will eventually lose it's meaning and become something else.

and why exactly does there have to be a end? not every game has a ending, they have cliffhangers so it leaves it open to future games, and with EU's design theres no need to release a EU 2, thats whats so special about EU somethings always happening, and the participants have to have a official event to have something to do.
