Hi, thought this sub-forum of mine a bit lacking, so here's my 2nd prize-winning entry for Feb's EntropiaFiction Poetry Competition; the brief was a poem about calypsian Wildlife. Thanks to Ieuru for the Comp, and the Prize (a nice amp for the Bravo:))

The Legend of Bunny Ears McPhee

The ignorant can’t see it, but the curious agree
The things we do not know must reach into infinity
Travellers roamed further, through sea and sky and space
Searching for a bigger better bolder brighter place

Not to do disservice to the place they left behind
They saw that they could learn so much whatever they might find
So there came a naturalist, to a world we all now know
He started off with dignity and ended up with woe

His mission was a simple one, to catalogue and file
But like young men before him he soon went the extra mile
He found himself out in the field for days and weeks on end
Taking notes and risks alike to hunt for news to send

His manner was approachable, and several smaller beasts
Who wary of his presence had performed a small retreat
Came closer to investigate this creature not yet seen
Allowing him to analyse a fellow alien being

The fears of both subsided and the Traveller dug deep
Finding what was left of lunch he held it out to eat
Looking up, the alien considered what it saw
A funny type of food and in it’s hand it had some more

It chose to do exactly what it always had before
The Traveller ran screaming with three fingers now not four
His wish to help the wildlife getting less with every step
He looked inside himself and knew precisely what to get

The subsequent adventure to record some rarer beasts
Also saw him slaughtering the smaller things he’d meet
Wrong finger on the trigger he would gleefully deal death
Revenge on those whose actions had made buttons hard to press

While lost in murderous rapture, in a crowd and firing blind
He didn’t see the Atrox that came in fast from behind,
He turned and fired and took some blows, a mighty scrap was fought
Eventually the beast succumbed but damage it had wrought

Tattered, tired and torn apart the Traveller crawled back
A year was spent in hospital because of the attack
He spent the time reflecting on the errors he had made
Resolving to do better in his future escapades

Regaining strength and purpose he set out to hunt again
Carrying a gun that should be mounted on a plane
Head to toe in hardened steel with crazy bloodshot eyes
He ran with full intent to give the Atrox a surprise

He came across his foe before the sun had ceased to set
Far away was something vast, a crazy silhouette
He steeled himself and tried to put his trust in what he’d bought
His inside leg got warmer as he dwelled upon the thought

The massive beast ran forward, an eight-legged cannonball
The Traveller fired once but hardly damaged it at all
Un-slowed and with ferocity the Araneatrox came
Quickly adding R.I.P. to this poor traveller’s name

And so there goes the legend of poor Bunny Ears McPhee
The man who changed Calypso living for eternity
By never giving up despite the times lay pained and stricken
And teaching all the mobs he met that humans taste like chicken.
