The Athena Spaceport VCC Rally

Athena Spaceport is a convenient location for all who wish to participate in or observe this event. As the area around Athena Spaceport is non-PVP, there will be no worries of other individuals "interfering" with the race. In addition, the creatures in the vicinity do little damage if they do happen to attack a vehicle as it passes by.

Contestants may only use the Valkyrie MK1 vehicle for this event. The Valkyrie MK1 is relatively affordable compared to most other land vehicles, gets excellent gas mileage, and is also faster than most other land vehicles.

The entire circuit can be completed once in less than 10 minutes, using less than ten oil!!!
(for you penny pinchers, that works out to about 0.20 ped, or 2 cents...)

Volunteers needed as VCC Rally Officials!!!

Rules and Information:


At maximum participation, the VCC Rally will be run in 10 preliminary heats of 5 vehicles, with the top two racers advancing to the semifinals. There will be 4 semifinal heats of 5 cars each, with the top finisher advancing to the finals.

In order to run this event effectively, I will need two volunteer officials to monitor the finish line and document the winner of each heat. An additional three to five race officials (non-participants) stationed at various waypoints throughout the race would also be very helpful in monitoring the contestants as they travel along the course.

• All contestants must participate in a Valkyrie MK1.
  No other vehicles are allowed to participate in the VCC Rally.
  
  
• All contestants are expected to stay on the course and navigate the appropriate checkpoints as listed in the course information. For obvious reasons, teleporting is discouraged. Failure to follow the course as described may result in disqualification.
  
  
• If you flip your vehicle or get stuck, you must pick up your Valkyrie to place it back into your inventory and then re-spawn it on the course route. In the event you fall off a cliff during the hill climb portion of the rally, you will most likely need to teleport out which will disqualify you from the heat.
  
  
• All event information at the start area will be communicated by VCC Rally Officials through the Open Chat Channel.
  
  
• Heats will be in 5 minute intervals. Contestants will be assigned to a heat in advance (see list below on race weekend), and will be expected to line up and spawn their vehicles on the starting line 4 minutes before the heat begins.
  
  
• All contestants will receive start warnings in the Open Chat Channel two minutes>>>, one minute>>>, 30 seconds>>>, 10 seconds>>> prior to the beginning of each heat.
  
  
• To simplify the start of each heat, participants will "GO!" when a rocket launcher explosion is set off.
  
  
• At maximum participation of 50, the top two racers from each preliminary heat will advance to the semi-finals. The winner of each semi-final heat will advance to the finals. The last four contestants will race in the finals to determine 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place.
  
  
• Practicing the race route prior to the event is strongly encouraged. Official guided practice runs of the VCC Rally Course will be held at 17:00 and 21:00 MA on the day prior to the event, Saturday February 26, 2011.

The Athena Spaceport VCC Rally Course:


The Athena Spaceport VCC Rally will be a challenging combination of fast-paced racing and slow, technical hill climb.

To get to the finish line, head EAST from the Athena Spaceport TP, cross the bridge, and follow the winding road up to the landing tower and observation deck.

The starting line is along the shore southeast of Athena Spaceport. After the start, head east a short distance, then turn left/north into Tree Alley. You may cut the very first corner after the start, and may also travel through the narrow canyon on whatever path you choose. Once you reach the top of the canyon, you may also choose any path you like off-road (indicated with the green circle) through the trees to get to the Cliff Jump at Waypoint #1.





Waypoint #1 - Cliff Jump / S-Turn

This checkpoint has a sharp S-Turn heading down a hill. You may either drive the road or jump the cliff at any location you feel is beneficial to your overall racing strategy. Choose wisely, as a crash this early may cost you the race. <NOTE: It is possible to jump this entire cliff safely...>

Waypoint #2 - Mound of Venus

Do I need to explain the name for this waypoint? Cut the approach corner if you like, up and over you go...

Waypoint #3 - North Hill

This checkpoint (shortly after"Mound of Venus") is a long, slow climb up a hill. You may cut the corner when the road doubles back upon itself.

Waypoint #4 - Greener Pastures

Go counter-clockwise around the VTOL that will be parked at this waypoint and head across the peaceful green meadow. Enjoy the short burst of speed before the next hill!

Waypoint #5 - Welcome

Prior to this waypoint, there is a very technical, narrow cliff road with a steep incline and sharp s-turns. There is also a sharp corner right after this waypoint. Be aware that cutting the corners too close will cause your Valkyrie to hang up and get stuck. (This can clearly be seen happening after this waypoint on the course demo video.) Practicing this section in advance will help you learn how to best navigate the turns. Welcome to Athena Spaceport!

Waypoint #6 - Catwalk Entrance

Turn sharply to the left, and continue up the precarious Catwalk. Be aware of the small, white "dot" in the middle, which is part of the catwalk suspension... your Valkyrie can also get hung up on this, costing precious time on your way up to the finish line.

FINISH

After the catwalk, continue up the hill and join the road up to the southeast landing tower and observation deck. The slight incline right before the tower should provide spectators with a dramatic finish as contestants complete the slow, agonizing crawl to the line. This completes the circuit, with the finish almost 600 meters directly above the start.

How to return to the "pits" at the start:
Drive off the cliff!!!
If you need to return to the start for another heat once you cross the finish line, simply step on the gas, head straight for the observation deck, and drive right off the cliff!!! You will survive the fall with minimal damage to your vehicle and land right in the "pits". Enjoy!!!








The rocky, uneven terrain near the finish line makes it somewhat difficult to find a spot to spawn a VTOL. If you do need to spawn one, please do so in the area pictured below, or simply park on top of the tower and use the televator.

Chrome, I love the course. I sound like a broken record, but I have spent many nights driving all around Athena, too. Your route is challenging but not impossible (there are some seriously ill roads around Athena) and the way you have the drop to the pits is very cool.

This will be much more a test of car control, and there are plenty of places where even a huge lead can disappear right up to the finish. I don't think we'll see cars overlapping at the line, but with such dangerous sections right up to the end, it will be very exciting. I can't wait.

Test Run

I just took a few laps, one to recon, one leading a soc mate, and then a serious timed effort on the third. This screenshot shows the results.

The elapsed time was 8:40 or so (time stamps approx), with minimal damage. I did try the jump, but spun out on landing, so it didn't help or hurt much (that was the damage), and otherwise it was a pretty clean run, considering the terrain. The total damage repair came from all three runs, I took a couple hits from mobs, near the start, on the first two runs.


Fun, challenging, and a great finish line! Don't miss this.

Thanks Miles... I completely agree that this race will be much more about control and ability to find the correct lines around corners. Huge leads can (and probably will) indeed disappear with even a small error.

I'm glad you like the drop to the pits, that took a bit of planning.
