This morning at 7 am one of the most recognized voices in rock radio in my area passed away after a hard fought battle with cancer. I listened to his show when I was a teenager, and today at 35 still listened.
Iron Mike Bensson was a radio DJ at the most popular Rock radio station in the area. 97.7 HTZ-FM. He was the kind of DJ that inspired many to become DJ's themselves. His shows were high energy... he was always calling his callers names like "Bologna Pony", and they'd respond by calling him names like "Duke of Douchbaggery". We all listened waiting for him to let a caller through just to hear them battle it out in order for the caller to prove himself worthy of hearing a request. Iron Mike used to say "Call me a name and we'll be friends forever!".
In honor of this fallen Rock Radio Warrior, could you please play his favorite song. "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)" by Metallica and send it out to Iron Mike Bensson!
