Question: Should I bother trying this game?

Hello, I found Planet Calypso's website just this morning and this seems like a really cool experience; an MMO where all my items have monetary value and I could possibly make a profit from if I am clever enough. However, I am reluctant to try this because I'm under 18 (above 13) and I wonder if this game will be too much for me to handle. I'm also not willing to spend any real money on the game unless I've tried it first and I know that it will be either fun or profitable, or of course both :) If I can't make a profit then I'm happy with playing this for fun like any other MMO.

So I have 2 questions:

1. Is this a place for a teenager like me?
2. Will playing for free offer a good trial experience? (This is free to play, right?)

Thanks, this is my first post and I hope that this is an intelligent and polite community with people who will answer my questions happily.
Also, side question, I told my mother that it's optional to invest in this game to earn money, but the way she sees it, that's gambling... Some leverage to convince her otherwise would be nice :)

EDIT: Thanks for the feedback guys. I think I'll give it a shot. Sounds like it's a bit more of a gamble than I thought, trying to make a profit from this game. Sorry, I guess that was unfair to ask for help about the gambling thing. Still open to words of advice about what my first steps into the game will be like!

1. There are players who started as teenagers and 5+ years later are no longer teenagers and doing pretty well.
2. Well, if you didnt enjoy playing for free, it wont have cost you anything but time. Obviously you wont get to experience everything Entropia has to offer with very restricted funds, but if you dont mind hunting on a very restricted budget and enjoy exploring a very large virtual universe I think you'll have fun.

Give it a go! :)

It is gambling.
But so is getting out of bed in the morning, or crossing the street, or buying a burger.

I played my first 6 months for free, so it can be done to learn the experience.
There are three likely outcomes for you starting at your age.

1. It quickly becomes booring without the cash to play at a faster rate.

2. You are a quick learner, grow your bankroll from nothing and start investing and turning over your in game 'profits' (which are very small at first but can grow over time) and become an active player able to finance your activities from your smart play and investments.

3. You become a gambling addict and find ways to deposit money you should have spent on textbooks or lunch.

That said, I love the game and think that if you approach it with honesty, discipline, and patience, that you can do well rather you deposit or play for free.

good luck however you choose :)

1. Yes - i started when i was 14 or 15 myself...
2. Much better than in the old days (there are noob quests here and etc)

Other notes: if you want to make profit - it will be hard, but if done properly you can live from only playing this game.
If you want to have fun - it is possible, but soon you will realise that those who deposit have much more fun than you which will probably lead you into depositing.

It is not regular MMO as everything has real life value and no one wants to give away their hard earned money as easily.

this place can be a place for a teenager like you if you are mature and disciplined, in my experience this is one of the most challenging survival games i have played. i think it is a bit of a mistake to see this game as a way to profit, i think it is healthier to view it as a (expensive) MMO where you can sell your skills and items for cash when you are finished and withdraw what is left of your "subscription" (minimum of $100 to withdraw). to be honest, obviously most people do not profit and the company needs money to pay for its service. in theory it is free to play but anything other than chatting and exploring and some marginal activities cost money.
this really is a tough game for anyone of any age, so it really depends on your personality and ability to budget, it is also a long term game, skills and progression is extremely slow compared to most subscription games.
im not going to even dare to try to persuade your mother of anything, i think it is fair to say that playing this game is not the same as investing, but to call it a casino is also unfair.
the way i see it is that if people have no problem playing "pay to win" "free to play" games where the money they spent is lost forever then i dont see the objection to "pay to play" games where you have the potential to get some of that money back after you have had enough of the game.
i hope that helps.

Hi there, and welcome to Entropia Universe!

1. Is this a place for a teenager like me?

Sure it is. I was 17 when I started playing and I had no credit card or any real money to deposit. I still had fun and still do today with minimal deposits.

2. Will playing for free offer a good trial experience? (This is free to play, right?)

There are some quests that you can do for free. Some give you items, weapons and ammo. You'll be able to experience a bit of how the game works for free. If you want to get into some serious playing you'll have to sweat a lot or earn PED other ways. Or you can of course deposit if you want to.

EU is really what you make of it. There is still much fun to be made here :)

HI and Welcome to EU

What all the others have said is correct , you can play for free and if you learn how to play very smart you can play without depositing at all.
To do this though needs a very concise appreciation of how EU works , this is not like a regular MMO in any way shape or form.
Best bet is to have a good read through all the information here on these forums with regards to new players.
dont be taken in by the chat window showing all the crafting HOF's and globals , on probably 99.9% of these the players getting the payouts have invested far more than they are getting back.
(to craft stuff you will need very good skills which you wont have)
Or they are experienced players with good crafting skills and a way to sell what they are making .

oh .. and read my sig !

This is a very nice and positive thread! Nice to see.

On topic. I started and played for a little over a year before I made a deposit for an investment in gear and skills, so it can be done. As others have stated, you need a fine balance of discipline, imagination, ingenuity, and time for this game.

The biggest thing about this game is your in it for the long haul. No fast skilling, unless of course your pockets are deep. ;) I would recommend playing as a non depositor first just to get a feel for it. Now is the time to ask for a mentor. A great way to get a better understanding, and answer the boat load of questions you will have. ;) Lots of people who have replied here are very good candidates for that position.

Gl and have fun. :)

So you've started, eh? :yup: Good luck on that! Some quick tips... DO NOT spend PED like crazy, buy things carefully. Try to find friends or a mentor to help. By the way, which Planet did you choose to start on?

Hi! I'm under 18 & I'm attempting this game too, wish you luck m8 :)

& it is possible to profit...without getting lucky...without gambling. Simply trade items between other players ^^ just need ta play the economy ^^

Welcome to the universe!

I think it is important to start this game playing for free anyways, gives you time to learn how the game works and build up some basic skills. The nice thing about this game, if you do deposit there is no obligation to deposit anything else, you can just play with what you have for as long as you want...

Thanks for the advice!
I think I'm still in the tutorial. Do I choose a planet after the tutorial? Because I don't think I've been given an option yet. I've created my avatar and have gotten a pistol so far...

You already had the choice. Is not obvious for the new player of course, but you'll be on the planet associated with the site where you created your account.

You I assume are in Thule, so will be either Calypso or Monria, if you signed up through Monria site.

Hey!

If i where you i would read all the guides here... Use the search function.

Then sweat and chat for a week.

Week2 i would depo 20 dollars

I would use those peds from the depo following the guide.

When/if i run out of peds id look back at it and ask myself: did i enjoy it and can i afford 20bucks each period.

I love this game... Been here since 2006 or so. Made tons of good and bad choises... I win and lose as in real life.

First off, no matter what any one says here, the general consensus is going to be, you won't know until you try. So try it. You've got nothing to lose.

You seem reasonably intelligent for your age, so I promise that you won't feel "overwhelmed". It will seem like a lot to learn at first, but you'll get used to it. Game mechanics/economy will take time to master, but there are plenty of resources and smart/friendly players at your disposal.

I will say this, unless you really love the game, you're not going to enjoy your time without depositing. It is a very grueling grind to try to make it in this game without using real money. But certain types of people can really enjoy this challenge. Good luck!

I started when i was 16 years, now im 27 :) You can handle it!

Try it and play smart = have the time of your life :beerchug:

Welcome to the Universe.

Long time player here and far from being a teenager and a huge depositor.

However having said that there has been a lot of excellent advice in this thread and you can play on a restricted budget. I have many friends who have been quite successful and play on a lot tighter budget than I.

The social aspect of this game was one of the original things that attracted me to it. Events as WoF very similar to real life Olympics is a wonderful way to meet and communicate with people from your own country as well as all over the world.

It is a long and sometimes difficult process to master all the mechanics of it however the only way to know if it suits you is to try it with a little patience.

Quite willing to help you out ingame on occasions. Just add me as friend from the player register once you have a chance to look around.

Cheers Jung

Tips section 2: Great way to start making friends is a society. They are life savers if you join the right one. Also, you may want to start thinking about your goals.:wise: Keep enjoying the game!

this.
for now u can just chill out and play casual while gaining skill and learning the game. one day u may want to get more serious

Welcome to this game.

A lot of good things have already been said in this thread.

On your first question "Is this a place for a teenager like me?" Although some people would claim that the community in this game is more mature than with some other games (really??), you will be not be the first player in this game of this age. I would say, enjoy this game!

Will playing for free offer a good trial experience?
In my opinion starting this game now has never been so easy with all the starter areas and missions, puny mobs, etc...however, once you have finished them and you are put on your own, expect a tough time...depositing would in this case make game play much easier, but there are enough opportunities to keep playing for free, but don't expect to get rich easy (remember, if it was easy, every player would be rich). You have to recognize and find the opportunities to earn money to keep funding your gameplay.

Earning money will typically not happen through the main professions (hunting, mining, crafting), on average they will cost you money, unless you are lucky.
Earning enough money to keep playing or extending your playing style, can happen in a few ways:
- from other players, by selling loot, crafted items, mined minerals or ores which are in demand and can be sold with markup to other players, or perform activities for other players, e.g. offer healing service.
- by using the opportunities provided by Mindark/planets: grabbing oil at the oil rigs, sweating, searching for stones (and fruit).
- external funding; there are a few websites which provide in games peds for doing tasks, watching videos, etc.

If you "survive" this period while playing for free, I think you have experienced the most important aspects in this game. Depositing however would make gameplay much easier and would allow you to play on higher levels much faster. However, the essentials remain the same, just the stakes are higher.

Depends what you want from it:

1- Online casino: If you've got alot of money and want to try your luck then yes this is the place for your.

2- 3rd world gold farmer: If you're living in a 3rd world country with low wages, and your willing to do the same thing over and over again to make less than a dollar an hour, then again yes it might be the place for you.

but if you're looking for alot of action and shooting, fun stuff with a large player base then no. There isn't alot of that happening here, mainly do to the fact that its real cash economy. So everyone is just trying grind stuff to make a little profit out of it.

Holy Cow...you dont talk teenager bro and you drew out the best this forum has to offer. It can slew hard to the negative side at times so be aware of that. Take a lot of it with a grain of salt :) Or better yet ignore about 90% of the negativity you run across altogether :).

You sound as if you have what it takes and I would refer you back to Narfi's post as reflecting much of my perspective too without boring you with a repeat. Costs you nothing to give this a good shot and if you don't like it you can say you tried and go find something you prefer.

I am four months in game now and haven't deposited anything yet, but I am ready to now. I have learnt heaps about playing eco on a budget, have managed to graduate discipleship and have enjoyed all of it so far with no deposits.

Its a grind at times and selling sweat to get a few ped here and there is a pure drudge to me...but its how I did it. WITH a lot of help from friends I might add. Friends are important in this game and with your attitude you will collect plenty of them.

Friend me in game and I am happy to assist you in any way I can. That can include flying you to hard to get tp's or a chat about how to go about pursuing missions and growth at your early stages. I'll help however I can.

send "tarcoula stormdancer uluru" a friend request if you like...glad to see any player with your level of maturity no matter how old they are.

Good luck! :)

Wow...negative much? He can easily make an in-game living(no, not a real world living, but yes even as non depo he can easily make enough to fund hunting/mining pretty often(if eco)) by trading. Buy low sell high, at about 50 ped, split 1/2 fun 1/2 business & continue, you'll have fun & slowly profit.

It'll take time to get a deal on auc that no one overbids, I haven't yet but it's only a matter of time & patience.

Oh, & I think I've found a way to profit almost continuously with hunting....but on a very small scale, sadly. But still, its fun :D

I started recently, but been reading a lot about this game but still not nearly enough as it seems. Somebody wrote that this is not a game. They were right.

BAD WAY: Try what i did. 3-4 days without depo, learning how to sweat:) Depo and invest in skills and bigger gun. Waste everything on hunting bigger mobs, lose, lose, lose, strip down and hunt lower level mobs, get to the bottom where you cant repair your weapon.... Depo again i guess:)

BETTER WAY: Or do what i am now doing, after burning 950+ ped of my first depo. Money left, few peds + new Depo and hunt mob that you can hunt without armor and healing and on non taxed land. Kill mob in 6-12 shots. Entropedia, see which weapon can you use. See average damage when maxed on that weapon. Multiply that number with 6 and then with 12. That is the X-damage *6 and x-damage*12. Now x*6 and x*12 is the range of Health of the mobs you should hunt and be ok. I didn`t get it at first, shooting 20+ bullets on regen big mob, healing, decaying armor and heal tool, and guess what:) Negative return.
Listen to those old players, they know what they say. :wise:

Im 14 but Ive put in a bit of money. To me it sounds like you want MA to pay you just to play. This is a hard game to profit in and takes serious dedication. Also, you need to lose money to make money so yea. Add me ingame if you are really serious about profit and we can talk. Remember, this game is long term, losing a few thousand ped in a month doesnt really mean anything. A good example of what I say is Strashs mining log.

If playing for free I seriously advise just putting in twenty dollars. Im not really into this but if you want, you can buy players ore for a lower mu and sell it for higher. After a few months you will probably be able to do some amped mining, plus you would have a few months to research and talk to people.

Look at Stryker by the way. One of the best players in the game, started as a teen. Don't get me wrong though, he started early and had a lot of advantages. I do not advise speaking with him though, Im worried you may be led in the wrong direction.

By the way, this is not gambling at all. Loot works specifically and will always average at around 90% when crafting, mining, etc. This doesnt mean it will always be 90%. With mining for example, amped, returns stay fairly low until after a few dedicated months to a year. After a year though, you could have made 10k USD. Look at Strash, good example especially because its all here on the forum.

Laws on gambling are very strict. I live in the U.S. and there is no way the game could just come in and people (kids and teens) could legally gamble online. To think this game is gambling is false. It would never be legal if it were and there are many patterns you can find to prove it.

Please for god sake open your eyes. Yes this is a grinding game but not "3d world gold farmer" or (illegal) "Online Casino".

:scratch2: I never said anything about it being illegal. There are many online casino sites.

It is like real life.

You sweat for 8, 10, 12 hours a day and enjoy the rest of your day. Some days you don`t sweat at all, and just enjoy, but those days you burn money easily and regret later slowly:)

Ingame sweating=IRL working. Boring but puts the items/food on the table. The only difference here is that you can enjoy this game without sweating. Exchange your IRL sweat for game currency. Maybe increase it, maybe decrease it. But you are not forced to sweat in game. I started with 20 and later 100 dollars depo. And another 100 dollars later and that is in 25 days. I love to enjoy game and i hate working IRL, so shooting things and mining and driving/flying around is really fun for me:)

like most people pointed out all the positive stuff allready. Give it a try, play smart and most important: have fun
If u fail to profit u at least had fun while loosing a few bucks :)
