Derid tuned out the talk around him and sighed inboards. Here he was, standing with all the other newbies in the line for some oil. He had returned home after visiting Arkadia and the Next Island a half year ago and was back in the grind to build up his bank roll again.

The banter was harsh but friendly in the line as most of them have spent a lot of time together here waiting for their chance on some oil. There was something in the air although, he could feel it, almost touch it. Something feelt wrong and he glanced around to see what it could be.

"Derid, dont you agree?" Someone asked.

He came out of his thoughts and looked around and realized he had not heard a thing.

"Sorry, was not paying attention. Whats going on?"

"Ha, that's not the first time, still dreaming of grand travels and new scenery?" Lill asked him.

"Yhea, we cant all become oil barons here so might as well save up to see the world again. The new frontiers are new for me until I have seen them." He grinned.

"True, maybe we should.." Lill continued talking.

He saw something, he turned and looked away in the distance and saw the movement. The yellow armor gave the warning and he just had time to get out a warning.

"Watch out, south east!" he yelled as he saw the first shot come in taking out the poor guy standing last.

Panic erupted and people ducked for cover in the barren and burnt area. But there is not much to hide behind and some stood there with blank eyes just waiting for the unavoidable that would happen. The guard standing on the log tried bravely to fight off the intruder but got fired upon from another direction and fell.

Derid pushed Lill to the side and yelled for her to run for the border to the east and he then turned and moved sideways to avoid the fire. People were falling victim for the deadly fire that came from two directions and a few cries of agony was heard over the sound of rifle fire and the metallic sound of the oil rig.

Two of the younger men dashed for the rig as an oil barrel was up for grabs, none of them reached it as their greed put them in an open fire line. Derid realized that he would be next soon and looked for cover, he dashed for a nearby tree and could see Lill some distance ahead of him running with her white armor back to him.

"God I hope she makes it." He thought for himself when he ducked in behind a tree.

He knew this was a temporary solution and would not protect him for long. He peered around the tree and saw a guy with the angels wings on his back get gunned down when he was trying to jump down the shelf behind the rig.

"Thats one angel who wont fly again.." Derid thought sadly for himself when he realized that the two aggressors were moving in. He decided now or never and went for it. Ducking from tree to tree and moving sideways as much as possible to avoid the fire that was on him. He could see the border, the safety, but it was very far away and he knew that the last part would be a lot of open ground to cover. He risked a glance behind him and saw a man chasing him with a rifle in hand and yellow armor.

"Frack it, you not getting me easy!" He almost yelled out loud as he managed to get down a small shelf and got out of sight for a few seconds.

Derid changed his direction and headed for the north hoping this would throw the pursuer off to give him that little time to get out of the area. He could see the border where the charred earth turned into green grass, lovely safe green grass.

"Who said the grass is not greener on the other side." was the thought he had when he felt the hit in his back. It plunged him forward but he managed to stay on his feet and stumbled forward.

No more shots came and he could hear another rifle go off further in back at the rig and an agonizing scream could be heard from a woman who obviously had walked into this cowardly ambush. He fell on his knees when he reached the green grass and just breathed for what felt like hours. He then slowly took off his settler armor and saw the big hole in the back and realized that even tho this armor was weak, laughable by most, it had saved his life.

He stood up and started walking to the eastern border to find Lill and head back to town to rest before another day of living in fear with the others willing to risk their lives for a few PEDs of oil.

"Who said life as a roughneck is not glamours?"

Derid, over and out.

PS. Survived with 1 hp :)
