If you look at professions on link, tells you how various skills add to the profession. So for example captain that you asked about, pilot contributes 30% but other skills also contribute; the ones that probably achieved the rank for you (perception, courage etc)

as higher is your captain prof, as many chances you have to dodge an attack in space (while you are in quad, sleipnir or Mothership/privateer)
