Question: Pet handler: how does it work?

Hello everyone!

I'm pretty new to the whole pet system in the Entropia Universe.

I've already got how the "Animal Tamer" profession works. The higher it is, the easier to tame an animal. In fact, I've bought my first whip and tamed about 100 bristlehogs myself.

Now, what I don't understand is what I should do after I have tamed the animal. I've searched and read some information about it, but I'm still confused how the whole leveling up process works.

I know I need nutrio bars to keep the pets fed. Alright, I bought myself a few thousands of it. I know I have to keep my pet spawned so it gains XP and eventually levels up. Cool, I have my pet spawned. I've read doing tricks speeds up the process (but it also consumes more energy). So, I've been doing the "dance" trick whenever my pet is at 100% focus (after all, I've read that doing tricks at low focus is much more expensive).

So, my questions are:

1) What does the "Pet handler" profession has to do with this whole process? I've had my pet spawned for about 2 hours now, doing tricks whenever it is at 100% focus, and haven't gained any skill whatsoever. I thought "Pet handler" would level up when you did tricks or other pet-related activities...

2) What is the cheapest way of leveling pets? Not necessarily the fastest. Is it cheaper to do tricks when focus is 100%, or just leave your pet spawned and wait?

Thanks in advance!

Cheapest is as you are already doing. Tricks at high focus only.

pet handler is related to whether you can use the unlocked tricks at higher lvls. The pets that say they are harder to train require higher lvls of pet handler if you want the extra tricks to not be greyed out. Gaining pet handler is done through pet training, but like all eu activities you gain more with higher cost activities a bristlehogs are the cheapest pet out there.

I've been writing about this in my other thread "Ricks 500K pets".

100% focus is a myth

In my tests I've noticed that lower tricks can be performed at lower focus and still provide the same XP.
So that means only higher tricks will require higher focus percentage.

First off each trick will have a set cost per trick that differs depending on what pet you're training. The bigger the trick the more that trick will cost you.

The cost of each trick is static, i.e. it's the same no matter what percentage your focus is at.
As long as your focus percentage (relative to your skill) is adequate to perform the trick you should recieve the maximum amount of XP that trick offers. The important thing is "your pet does not have to be 100% or 99%"

Maybe we need a table of xp per tricks per pet, but since we don't have that yet it's very simple to calculate on a personal level.

When you first log in on a new day your pet should be 100% focus. That's a good time to test how much xp you receive from a pet for a trick. Test each trick at 100% focus.

Then build up some personal records of what xp your pet gives for each trick at 100%.
Then test how low you can drop your focus for each trick to get maximum xp.
Record what level your Pet handler is.

See if getting more Pet Handler skill, allows you to drop your focus further, and still maintain max xp per trick.

You should find that:

You may still need 99% focus to do a Boast or Exotic trick
But you might get away with 90% or lower for doing greet or dance

Therefore you should find that lower tricks say greet and dance can tolerate much lower focus % than higher tricks. I'm sure this is relative to skill level, some maths needs to be assessed on this, and maybe a lot of data collection from the community.

I agree that training pets does not give much skill, even training top end pets doesn't give much skill.
You need to tame pets to get Animal tamer and Animal Lore skill.

As with every skill gain activity in EU, the greater your input damage (i.e. cost your put into the system), the greater then return in skill gain.

So you should then, get more skill from taming a Chirin dragon, than taming a rabbit "if using a bigger whip".

Obviously this means the larger the whip you use, the greater the chance of increasing your skill faster for the time you input into the game. So there will be a point that it's better to drop down mobs to get more opportunity for tame attempts for the amount of whip strikes on the mob you're trying to tame.

I can't hold your hand with this, you need to understand the basics and then give it a go.
Get a taming ring so you get more successful tames per whip.
If you have one use a pet spawned with taming passive buff to max your skill gain.

Good luck

Rick

My brother is a Pet handler specifically all types of dogs. He did not have a complete education about pets but he is focus and interested about dogs very much. He had self study about all types. His only goal is to give them a balance and a healthy life with the owner. He see to it that he is responsible for their safety, dietary care and exercise of pets. He also trains dogs.

There are already some specialist's here, like Juicy and Rick who can help you more specific.
From my experience gaining skills it depends of the rarity of the mob too. Gaining skills from common planetary mobs, like brist, is next to nothing. If you get a rare or legendary you will see skill gaining just by having your pet standing there.
