Hi! I joined a few days ago and one of the skills I was looking to get into was the Makeup skill. However, I am having difficulty finding the materials on the auction house.

Is there another place a noob would easily be able to find them? I'd be willing to do a little depositing to get a basic kit going, as I have a background in the arts and I used to experiment with makeup on Second Life, which is a different system of course, but I think I'd be able to get a hang of this one pretty quickly. I also have a Wacom tablet and a Cintiq knockoff that I'm looking to get more use of.

Is it an unpopular field to be in? Or would I be able to at least get by?

I think you mean Profession: Face Sculptor?

very unpopular and something you could only specialise in later in the game along with body sculptor and hair stylist. people in this game aren't willing to spend too much money on aesthetics (at least the average guy, maybe it's different with the high rollers). you probably need to chip in to even get started in that field

of course if you can provide the materials yourself it's gonna be easier, so I'd advise you to take the regular hunter-miner-crafter route and only branch out into that field much later, esp. since I don't know whether you like those aspects of the game

The problem with makeup materials is that they are not very common in loot but at the same time have little to no demand, so most people sell them to the TT or toss them into storage to never be seen again.

I suggest you put a thread on the buying section of this forum and start building a stock of everything if you are serious about the profession. Expect tough times at the beginning since you won't be very skilled, but it will get better with time.

A popular idea is to offer your services for decay at start, and make your clients bring the materials/paints/mask to you. If you have some art in your veins your service will get popular, and then with some client base and stock you ditch this idea because it's a pain the butt for your potential clients :)

I'm sure someone with more specific knowledge will help you out.

Good luck.

To gather materials, as O2 says, low demand and rare = poor sellers on auc, so very few people sell them. The best two ways around this - threads on PCF, and auction orders. It will cost you (1 ped per day) to make an auction order, but they are quite useful. Listing between 110-125% for makeup bits will get you a fair amount of sales (as a hunter, I check open auction orders first on loot to see if I can get a quick sale).

There is a definite market for artistic / creatives in EU. However, due to the real money involved, you need to offer a unique or better service than your competitors. To start with, your in-game skillpoints will be limited and this restricts your options - lower number of hairstyles, facial features, limited colours available. As you skill up, more options are available.

A lot of people offer free "skilling" service where you perform a beauty treatment on a customer pro-bono just to gain skills. You may want to request tips to cover the cost of materials while you are skilling.

To do any treatments which require a seat (body sculpt, haircut) you'll need a personal space (apartment, house, shop) and the relevant items to perform the treatments.

All in all, it is not a very newbie friendly profession (due to the startup costs), and can be quite difficult to gain customers (limited pool, very limited repeat-ability). But, if you have the artistic ability and advertising skills, you will find the possibility to profit.
