Hello people!

This incident occurred about a week ago, but I did not post about it because I wanted to see how it played out. I was standing around in Twin Peaks after I had returned from a hunting trip.

An avatar which is unknown to me says hi and I say hi back. He proceeds asking me if I have the money I owe him, where upon I respond that I don't borrow money from people and that he has mistaken me for someone else.

He suggest that I may have been under the influence of alcoholic beverages when I borrowed the money, hence I don't recall the transaction. I explain to him that I have not had more than 6CL (2 Fl.Oz) of whiskey the past 9 years and that he is still mistaking me for someone else.

The avatar kindly informs me that he knows who I am and that I would have much to lose for being exposed as a "scammer", and that it would be easier to just pay him. I promptly decline his request, where upon he bargains with me for a lower amount. I promptly decline again. The gentleman informs me that I will now have it the way I have chosen.

Now, some time has passed and I have not heard from the gentleman, nor have I seen any public posts regarding my alleged debt towards him.

To clarify for everyone, in my 13 years of Project Entropia and Entropia Universe, I have never borrowed PED's from anyone in the game, except for some pocket change from my IRL brothers. On top of that I have many times been trusted with borrowing high end equipment worth hundreds of thousands of PED, without collateral, from well known players in the game. I have always returned the items.

So please be aware, this may very well be a new method of scamming, blackmailing veteran players. Stay alert and be selective about who you speak to in game.

Thank you for sharing this Elite.

At least we have an exemple to rely on if it happens in the future.

Else im sure Support can easily check trades history aswell as chat logs and find out who is being a bad puppy, probably why this avatar did not go for "his way".

But reputation always get affected in such affairs.

Thank you for awaring us.

E~

I certainly would not worry about this, your reputation is well known and if someone never heard of call scam he would need hard evidence to prove otherwise.

Wow..... im shocked a bit here......

Really dont get how ppl can do things like that!

sorry to hear that is happening!
just in case I will appreciate if you PM me the name and don't worry we know who you are so there is no issue.

What is a Blackmail Offence?
The statutory offence of blackmail is committed where one person, being the offender, threatens the victim with physical harm, exposure or other kinds of threats unless a demand is met which will benefit the offender at the victim’s expense. Section 21 of Theft Act 1968 criminalises blackmail. It is a more serious offence than it is regarded to be by many people. The punishment for blackmail upon conviction can be as high as 14 years in prison. However for the prosecution to establish a blackmail charge against the offender, the elements of the crime must be present. First and foremost, the menace or threats being issued by the offender must be accompanied with a demand, which the law requires to be unwarranted.

Furthermore, the offender must stand to gain or to benefit another and to occasion loss to the victim as a result of the blackmail. Menace in the context of blackmail offence extends beyond physical violence. It involves a significantly high level of coercion to warrant the criminal liability of blackmail. Sometimes the threat issued in the course of committing the offence of blackmail may relate to issues which actually took place. For instance, a threat to expose details of a man’s extramarital affair to his wife does not constitute a crime. The offence of blackmail is committed when a demand is associated to such a threat from which the offender stands to gain or to benefit another.

Sentencing for Blackmail
The seriousness of the offence is brought home by the fact that it is an indictable only offence which attracts up to 14 years imprisonment. The threat or menace and demand elements of the offence of blackmail can take place in person, over the telephone, through post and even on the internet. In the case of the latter, the offence will be regarded as internet blackmail, social blackmail or cyber blackmail. Regardless of the format the offence takes, blackmail is essentially the extortion of money from a victim by issuing the victim with threats or menace. Although they are separate offences, blackmail and extortion are quite similar in that threats are issued in both offences for the purpose of deriving a gain from the victim. Regardless of the nature of the blackmail allegations you are facing, speak to one of our vastly experienced London criminal solicitors today about your case.

My advice to anyone who is affected by illegal activity in game - speak to MA, get the chat logs (and if necessary trade logs), speak to a lawyer, and file a case.

Sure; reputation is everything in EU, especially amongst us long timers.

On a personal level I wouldn't worry about it e-lite, just some chancer trying it on.

Thanks for info anyhow.

Rick

It sounds kind of funny how creative they can be.

I have been in such situations before. A guy named "Entropia Universe Supp0rt" I think it was, adding me to fl and asking me to log into a website. For me it was too funny to see this. Like really?

Another time, a guy who joined my old soc worked as a "spy". Reading the chat for a while to get info regarding our friends.

He then contated a guy that i somehow mentioned in chat and that he was a friend of me. He asked the guy who knows me for PEDs when I was offline. Saying that I will pay my friend PEDs when I'm online again. This was a nice trick. But my friend was smart and waited untill i logged in again to confirm this and I said I had no idea whats going on.

People are creative when it comes to money-stealing. Funny but sad too.

Lemme guess... 'twas a Friday night and you made a typo or two writing to a public channel?

Because this thing...

He suggest that I may have been under the influence of alcoholic beverages when I borrowed the money, hence I don't recall the transaction.

...has been around since at least 5th century BCE. :yup:

What one should pay attention to in such situations is clothes - because these avatars are likely 'cousins' in borrowed clothes, and some peculiar piece of clothing may appear on someone else later.

pff, just admit it, you got wasted as fuck( whisky, extcasy and weed dont mix well), then you went on and borrowed 32,456 peds from the dude.

Half will be forgiven if you confess you know

For idiots like this, I like to open a trade window, drop 1000 ped or whatever in and then go do some chores.

No lawyers will touch this. They will just laugh at you. Same with law enforcement.

Don't believe me? Some years ago I did just that for a more serious situation. I was escorted out-of the police station.

The UK and US are very different places, none more-so when it comes to our policing and criminal justice systems. Further, direct value can be assigned to Entropia items (due to the PED-USD interchangeability) as opposed to inferred value that other games might have (I could sell X Gold on an exchange for Y USD).

I'd be less confident in cases of item theft (all you could really prove, is the item's TT value with the logs) but in direct PED theft or fraud, it's prima facie.

Im really glad you spoke up on this matter. It's just to bad these people get to hide in the shadows, I would absolutely be happy to negotiate such a blackmail attempt in person.

I had a similar experience but no where near this magnitude, were a guy was waiting on pirates to loot people and then he would fly out and loot the pirates. He then PM'ed me and told me he had my stuff and asked what I had taht he would give it back. I didnt think I had anything then told him to keep it.

A few hours later I did remember what I had and told him about it. He told me id have to do a few things to get it back. This really didnt sit right with me, he was holding my loot until I did what he said... Let's just say my integrity is much higher then that and no one will force me by holding my loot. At least the pirates dont loot you and say if you do this this and this we might give it back.

Thats not Blackmail but it is Ransom , then he did the same and proceeded to call me a drunk bast*** etc, in the end I did not fall for it and I did not get my loot back. And I also rarely drink and havent been *DRUNK* in a very very long time.

Well known player doing this and I have a video of the PM chat with him on my youtube channel. He's still doing it afaik.
That does sound like the same distinctive pattern...

How many pipes of stupid does one have to smoke in order to attempt this type of scam? :scratch2:

Would like a PM with the name as well.

And was a new avatar or someone "skilled" ?

I always carry around the tt scanner just in case this sort of thing happens.

Did not read in your post that you reported them with chat logs to Mind Ark. Please do that if you have not done so already. That is clearly illegal activity and Mind Ark would one hopes permanent ban people who clearly break the law.

If someone is silly enough to try that on me 2 things will happen.
1. they will be named and shamed in every channel that I am subscribed to as well as the generic channels Mind Ark gave us ingame.
2. Support case will wing its way to Mind Ark.
