Entropedia down

Is it the software causing the problem or the server? I don't like to complain about a free service but it would be nice if it could be reliable.

The problem is, with all due respect to the original programmer and the work he did, his choice of infrastructure placed a burden on his successors. Not blaming him, you're enthusiastic when you start such a project and use the tools and methods you happen to favour at the time. Nobody thinks of the hereafter and nobody can keep up anything forever, and so it happened he couldn't be motivated to return to it.

Always too inert to go about making a new one while Entropedia is kept up and running no matter the pain, the extended downtimes are spawning new efforts now and this is a good thing. Not too long before it will be time to take the old mare behind the barn and shoot it. It will be remembered fondly.
