Not necessarly. We're pretty much same age in PE/EU. Skill income has been changed dramatically in last years from what I see (just came back after a break of about 3 years and in what regards hardcore hunting maybe 7 years). Even an accessible (L) 105% gun from auction of about 40dps, 4-5 hours/days. pills+ares imp+game's skill bonuses+coordinated mission completion can lead to 100k in half a year. Of course you'd need some deposits, but is waywayway less than what you needed to deposit say in 2007 to even dream of reaching 100k.
On topic, 300k average should be enough. At 70+ dps it stops looking as unattainable. And I am not even talking about chipping in, which is dirt cheap if you can sell couple of hundreds MU/week in auction and sponsor that.
