My son's laptop has a dedicated NVIDIA GeForce 840M GPU and the game will crash if it is used on any graphics setting other than Safe Mode.

While not expecting amazing results with the GPU we would have expected to have slightly more options than Safe Mode or crash :)

The laptop is an i5 1.7GHz with 8Gb ram and drivers are all up to date.

Any suggestions?

Choose Safe Mode, crash doesn't sound to hopeful as an option. ;)

Has it got a cooling pad underneath it ?

Login and change settings down on your main PC first then login with it on the laptop. Maybe try 32 bit / 64 bit ?

re

Close all program that does not help EU to work.

Close chrome/mozilla etc... in the task manager (all except EU/Windows)

And maybe think about buying a new computer when you can you can find some PC not that expansive :)

I have ROG Asus G56JR (almost 3 years old already):
with Nvidia 760M and Core i7-4700HQ (2.4 GHz), 8 GB RAM
Win 7 sys (64 bit).

and i can run easily low-high settings maintaining 45-60 fps and no graphic crashes at all. So you should be able to have mayby low-mid settings no problem.

1) So i am assuming you are using 64 bit system (otherwise you do not have 8 GB but only <4 GB RAM atm since 32 bit systems can't really use more and this is the problem here).
Check for RAM usage and try to turn everything off before running Entropia.

2) Snd thing to check is: make sure you are actully using Nvidia and not Integrated GPU when playing Entropia (in Nvidia panel force to use the card for Entropia.exe and turn the "icon" showing what programs run on the card and check if "E" icon pops in the app when game s running).

Most resource hungry (but most visiually appealing) change is shaders (do not mistake with shading ;)) from medium to high (game looks totally different on this change) and i can still set this to high and run smoothly.
Second most resource hungry thing is just ONE variable in .cfg file: e_proc_vegetation = 0.
If it is set to 1 - all sort of crapy grass and bushes appear on the ground (setting this to 0 removes all of this and beside making game running smoothly it is way easier to spot stones/fruits now :)).
The .cfg file is located in: "(...)\Entropia\out\public_users_data" folder.

When i set ALL settings on high i drop to 30-45 fps which is why i don't but for some people 30 fps is actually acceptable too.

Sidenote:
In the past on my previous laptop which had 4 GB and Win XP system (before MA optimised the game a little bit) crashes were caused mostly becasue game was reaching 2.2 GB RAM usage. The problem was: XP was forcefully allocating up to around 1.5-1.8 GB RAM for no apparent reason for system works and stuff. Forcing the change to always have at least 3 GB RAM free for non-system stuff solved the crashes problem back then (although this is not adviced since it "may" cause memory leaks - thats what i heard. Also i can not remember how i have done this but it was not much reaserch done to find out how).

@edit:
Also - cooling pad is very important thing ;).
Also if laptop was not cleaned inside for more than 1 year - you should do it too. Even if you do not know how - there is plenty of videos how to disassembl each laptop part by part. And if you are afraid - get it to specialist to have it done for you. 1 year for laptop that is run every day in "non-sterile" enviroment usualy means its cloged with dust particles a lot.

Thanks for the replies, it's almost as if the game is running off the integrated GPU but it is set to use the 840M and the nvidia control panel confirms this when the game starts.

Not sure heat build up is an issue as it will crash when starting from cold.

Crash is either in full screen or windowed, don't have an option to use the native resolution in windows, only full screen.

Running 64 bit client but it will crash on either 32 or 64 as soon as low settings are selected and Apply is pressed.

Hmm... the more i think about it the more it seems that you have corrupted cache/shaders downlaoded or something. Try deleting those folders from "(...)\Entropia\out\public_users_data":
- cache
- participant_content
- shaders
(i am deleting them from time to time myself so no worries - make backup if you are afraid).

DO NOT delete the "dynamic_content" becuse its the game engine and all other necesery files and if you do you will have to redownload it all (16.6 GB). Unless of course you want to test if mayby game engine is corrupted or something and you actually want to re-download whole game .

Also i could send you my .cfg file and you could use it from "start up" since it is not possible to change the settings other than ingame or manually editing the .cfg file. You could try deleting the .cfg (of course make backup copy of this one before!) and game probably will generate one too - but i am not sure with what settings (my guess it will still be safe mode settings though).

Also if i understad correct - game crashes imidietly no matter what specific settings you change from "safe mode" to "low" in the "Advanced" section in options, right? Or you tried chaning only "global" settings to "low" in "Graphics" tab? If not - try picking one only on few different in the "Advanced" tab. If this casues crash too - then my guess is there is problem with saving the .cfg file and not in any way with graphics (since changing something like "particle effect" from safe to low should not influence resource usage much). In that case deleting or replacing .cfg should fix this.

Try the options above and report what happened ;).

Just asking...is it a crash to desktop or a total crash with blue screen of death plus reboot?

If its crash to desktop, its probably the client software....if its the reboot kind....then maybe your laptop's time is up? :scratch2:

Most of the laptops I've encountered has an average lifespan of about 3 years before acting up and on the verge of dying.

Fortunately it's just a CTD rather than a BSOD

I see...

So...did Falagor's suggestion work?

If not, then I suppose your last resort would be to reinstall the client to see if that can fix the problem.

And if that still doesn't work, then I dunno....maybe you can try fiddling with the Nvidia Control Panel's 3d settings? (Though I usually don't fiddle much with it...so its mostly just between "let application decide", "max performance" or "max quality".)

/mod note/ moved thread to Technical section

Seven, have you tried the suggestions in this stickied thread?:
https://www.planetcalypsoforum.com/forums/showthread.php?142859-Intel-graphics-problems-The-solution

(PS: If that thread is now out of date, can someone please let me know so I can un-stick it? Thx )

Thanks, I had a feeling it was in the wrong section and did look for a Technical section but not used the forum for some time and couldn't remember if there was one when I couldn't find it at first. I'll check out the link

Which version of windows and have you tried changing the gfx card drivers (the latest don't always work)

Does the error mention "Game was crashing at startup, gave me the nvwgfx2umx.dll error." as

although it's for a different game it might help to point you in the right direction.

Thanks will look at these. The laptop is running Windows 10 Home, I have also installed back dated drivers just in case :)

At the moment my money is on corrupted shader files but until I have the laptop back at home I can't check for sure.

Son arrived with laptop this morning, none of these folders were present, so I uninstalled and did a fresh install and the game is working a treat in medium.

Thanks everyone for the assistance, case closed :)
