actually..... any site where you login should require SSL to prevent data theft. Not to mention the added SEO benefits these days.

Absolutely right. It's a 10 minute job to add one. Not sure why it hasn't been done yet.
 
Has anyone tried visiting the site by forcing the https?

There is a site but due to the scripts being linked to by http rather than https none of the formating is present and chrome insists that it isn't secure because of it and won't load the scripts. The certificate says it's valid for another month.

Exactly, especially since there are many people who use the same username / passwords in many sites.
