Hello fellow colonists,

I’m in the process of opening a shop and would like some feedbacks on the possible options.
Why? Simply because it will allow ME to offer YOU the best deals

What are you looking for?

I have some options in mind:
1. Crafted components for crafters (offering screws, metal sheets, etc...)
Simple crafted items but necessary for crafters.

2. Mining/hunting loots
Not sure this option will actually go well as most of the stuffs are flooded on the market but having them at good price might be worth it.

3. Tools (mainly mining)
There are quite a bit of these already but the location could help (I’ll disclose that later).

4. A mix of the above with some pets and extras
What I am worrying about with this option is that the more diversity you offer the less likely you are to get regulars - specialty is usually better but still worth checking what other Entropians want.

Open to suggestions and comments as long as they are constructives. I want to have something that will benefit us, not me, not you, but US!

PS: I’ve read the thread on advises to open a shop - very good one. This one is to know what I should concentrate my efforts on, or at least an idea.

Thanks again!!!

PS2: Sorry if this post is in the wrong location, not too sure where to put it as not many really look at the “trading/shop” section.

Sell what you want. What others tell you to sell cannot dictate what you personally want to do. Some will give suggestions, some good, some bad. Ultimately, if you don't have a business plan or advertise heavily shops won't compete against the luxury of the auction. It still can be fun, but to really get profitable with it you need to figure out what you really want to do.

Get a shop that sells nutrio cheaper than what you can find on auction and you may have a regular buyer here. ;)

Oulaladidon I would certainly be interested in purchasing items. The type of items I use at this stage are enhancers for weapons. I am usually to broke to look for anything else at this stage.

If you wanted, I would be happy to sell you looted items you may require

I have no doubts your shop will be a success

Good luck with the new shop!

I'd suggest things like Amps, enhancers, tier components, etc :)

In what regards 1 and, to some extent, 2, you have to somehow put it in trial & error. Respectively, the best crafting clients (high volume ones, known names etc) usually weigh a few tons and they favour staying between the crafting machine, tt and auctioneer. And they usually work with orders.

Maybe, some sort of specialisation would help? Not sure, I am shooting in the dark here, I am selling my things on AH.

Anyhow, carefully research your market of choice in terms of range of offers, eventual synergies between offers (e.g. a crafter of tech gizmo would also appreciate animal oils near widgets) and of course volumes.

Tools tend to be more stable and as long as you have good prices, supply and work on advertising, it should work. I am buying my finders and amps mostly from shops, only as exception from AH.

In what regards pets, is still sort of wild wild west until we'd have them auctionable and have some price trends. The main issue is (regarding trained pets) the different value buyer and seller would put in the level of the pet and how balanced are the effects, availability, price etc For the given time, I consider my pets wasted money and emotional shopping so to say :)

Good luck with your endeavour!

A littlest pet shop would be fun! Tonnes of nutrio, animal essence, name tags and some more rare pets.

There are already too many pets in stores that do not sell, all you need to do is go wander the malls and you will find them. They are a very small niche market, and one that does not do well.

Do your research, look at what other shops sell, look at what the well advertised shops do. Trial a few things and see what works, it will take time, effort and persistence. Your biggest competition is the Auction House that is accessible nearly anywhere, so make sure you are pricing appropriately and have a reason for someone to go to your shop.

Don't be that type of seller where you spend a lot of money on the shop and stock it with junk or put ridiculous prices, otherwise it will just sit there gathering dust.

I sold 7 pets in 3 days. Ofcourse it looks like they are gathering dust, but they are not, because I simply replace them with fresh ones. Simple pets sell for 1 ped, I sell the Atrox/leprechaun pet for 2, and sapphire pets for 7.
I also sold ancient pets for 30-50 ped.
The location of your shop is key. Mine is visible from the teleporter at Genesis HQ
And yeah, making sure you are always a bit below auction house pricing helps.

Thank you all for your feedback so far.

I already had an idea on what to do with it, but seeing the comments so far helped me to adjust the plan.
I'm visiting malls and shops at least once a day to see what's good and what's not, what's on offer and what's not.

I have some contacts and ideas to get the best deals, but I'll need to try and error.

One question though, do you look at the advertisement panels scattered throughout Caly? "Passive" advertisement is a bit expensive but could be a good option - but if you are like me, you'd barely look at them and I feel like it's not really worth it - it might be just me though... :wise:

Hopefully I'll open shop in couple of weeks. It's a pretty good location being close to the TP. :yay:

Thanks again. :wtg:

Whatever you decide to sell, the key to success is advertising.
Use all the different venues available to promote your service such as the various forums, Discord channels, in game trade channels and even the in game ad terminal if you can afford it.
Bump your posts daily and spam hourly.
Best of luck with your shop.

Thats great, and i can sell 1 x armatrix rifle for more profit than those 7 pets in a couple of hours.
Again its a very small niche market, many shops do not sell pets well. If you have managed to do that with an okay ROI for what you paid for the shop, all the more to you. Same to those that can sell Jester D1's in their shop they paid 16-26K for.

However someone asking what they should sell in their shop, pets is not the answer you should be giving them unless you plan to spend enough per month at their shop to support them owning it.

Owning a shop is just ped tied up. When you are done with it you'll sell it for at least the price you paid for it.
As long as there are no plans to open up all the empty shops in the hands of marcus callendar or new areas on Calypso with shops, the price of shops will not go down, which means you don't need to have a roi on the shop. So there's no support needed (unless it's bought with money a person cannot miss, but then they shouldn't have bought it in the first place)

You are simply cheaper off than selling on auction. And since pets cannot be sold on auction, it is a niche that works for shops. Especially since everybody is saying they don't sell. I just showed you that they do sell. the tt value of a pet is 1, 2 or 3 pec if you decide to refine it into essence. So selling them for 1 - 10 ped depending on rarity is a nice price for a customer, and good business for a tamer.. Say I sell 7 pets a week for 10 peds (atrox go for 2 ped), then I roughly make 500 ped per year from having 7 item points in my shop. Leaves 53 other item points for other stuff.
Now I bought my shop from Miggo the pet tamer from the auction house for 3500 ped. I think I got a good deal there. (And was lucky to swipe it, before anyone else could). I will never let it go for under 10k.

The armatrix gun example.. You would have to compete with all other shops that do the same and the auction at that. It's what everybody does. If it works for you, great, just saying that a shop loaded with "junk" works fine too.

I do agree with the ridiculous prices, unless an item is really rare and never found on auction, or has collector's value.

I do try to track my ROI on my shop, and it is somewhere around 8 years to break even when I base it just on ped saved with respect to the auction. It all depends what you do with your shop and other value-added things (e.g., making being a trader easier rather than just getting loot).

That said, I do agree ROI is somewhat secondary for a shop, though still important. It needs to be worth your time as well. I for one don't like trying to list things on the auction, spending the fee, and not knowing if it will sell or not. The little bit of ROI along with the convenience of being able to change prices in your shop or place the item and forget about it is worth something too.

That said, the investment is high enough that many new shop owners tend to buy a shop, try it out a little bit, and give up. You need to really know what you are selling and how well it sells in order to figure out your savings from auction fees and how to price your shop. Too many price over MU, giving no one a reason to stop in compared to just going to the auction.

Thank you all for your suggestions, comments and advises :ahh:
