As for your next question, could I recommend it?
To the right person, absolutely. And that is a key point - EU is not for everyone. I would not recommend to anyone who I knew was not suited to it.

Their revenue model works, they make money from decay, and they have survived for years on this and still going. ...
This is how ingame economy is setup up and has nothing to do with their RL financials. Unconsumed PED's are not considered in their balance sheet, they are only stated as possible liability. This is a quite risky approach and has been discussed several times.
To sum it up: deposited PED is income for MA and booked as net sales, although not all PEDs got consumed (decayed). At 2010-12-31 there where 68Mio unconsumed PED. Their profit in the last years was mainly due to this. As less PEDs have been deposited in 2010 and exchange rates were not favorable to MA, they've made a loss of about 22Mio PED. Their total assets are about 102Mio PED and totally equity is about 76Mio PED. Hence, financials are not looking good.
I personally do not have any problem with this as I'm still trustfully. They have however to rethink their strategies. More PEDs must get cycled so that there is more decay and this implies that we do need more players as playing costs are already high.
As Miles has stated, EU is not for everyone and it is quite difficult to recommend this game to others. Furthermore, I do get the impression that there has started some sort of melancholia among long time players. Not sure if they are a minority, but they are well heard over here. Hence time has come to react as refusing to confront or acknowledge the problem is the wrong strategy.
Unfortunately we have still to SEE.

It's dangerous to fulfill any demand of the community, trying to satisfy everybody. But it might be even more dangerous to concentrate solely to a specific groups of players, ignoring the requirements necessary to ensure a healthy amount of new comers, and growing up players. ...
The game company should acknowledge the problems and the sorrows of the players, it should react explaining and moderating, quickly and caring, but it never should get pressed. This would be a thing destroying games.

They made themselves dependent of the high stake gamblers, ignoring a once healthy base of new comers and growing up players.
When I travel Calypso these days, or Arkadia, I find quite a lot of people whacking high HP, regenerating mobs exclusively. While wide areas, populated with lower mobs are literally empty, only visited by an occasional miner.
I don't find many traders selling or buying small amounts of loot anymore. They have been gone since long. The economy for the average Joes has collapsed, they feed the TT until they finally leave. I don't find this many people anymore crafting all over the place, and the global spam mostly reports the same well known names over and over.
Any event, any new addition to the game, caters those that are ready to risk a big buck. Few is done for those that are not ready to do this. But these are legion, and would be ready and happy to participate, and to fuel MA's needs, and to add to the success of this game.

It's dangerous to fulfill any demand of the community, trying to satisfy everybody. But it might be even more dangerous to concentrate solely to a specific groups of players, ignoring the requirements necessary to ensure a healthy amount of new comers, and growing up players. These might be the big spenders of tomorrow, if offered a satisfying game experience. Concentrating on a small number of big spenders poses the risk that they just hear a bad news, grab their money & run. With a devastative result ...

I'm sure that quite some of you high profile players will disagree, from your view, but think for a moment - not possible that there's a grain of truth in what I told you?
