Hi all,

Not sure this is the right place for this post but I come to you with a question and possible debate.

I was looking into making a logo for myself and possible making it my avatar on the forum and entropialife aswell. I wanted it to involve my name and SS seemed like a good start. Now I think you know where this is going :p
So I went looking online and I noticed the Shutzstaffel emblem and I tought well this looks realy nice I can do something with this. I'm a verry open minded person and well I just think the 2 s'es in the form of a lightning works and looks realy nice. I don't mean just copy paste a nazi symbol What I mean is taking the concept and turning it into my own symbol. Will it be banable If I just make this into a symbol? Is it a smart Idea? what I just stick with it or go with a hole other idea? any sugestions?
To be clear I'm not a nazi sympathisant nor will I ever be I just like the look of the symbol and how it corelates to my name. after all isn't this the same way Hitler took the swastika? cause it looked nice to him? It was already an ancient symbol. In my opinion the moment we link these symbols to the nazi cruelty doesn't that mean they won? and all the lives lost in WWII where in vane if u can't even choose something that looks nice and that you don't link to something in any way but people will give you a slap on your wrist or worse just cause they do?
any opinions?

This rings a bell, my avatar is called Slupor Slupor Slupor and I took part of the route you took for creating a graphic representation for my avatar. Realizing 2 or 3 letters "S" in whatever style will always be associated with the atrocities in WWII, I ended up with the imho epic and instantly recognizable Ego picure that represents the alter ego Slupor is for myself.

So my recommendation is, stay away from the letter S, there is more to you than just first letter of your avatar's name. Be creative and you will find something that fits you!

I don't I just like the idea of two s'es in lightning form and I want tot ake that concept and turn it into my own. What I don't wan't to do in any way Is just copy a nazi symbol right of the internet. the last thing is against ToS but what about the first?

I just like the look of it I don't care what others think if they ask my about it I'll just say it looks nice :p and I choose it for the looks and nit for the past behind it

I actualy like a lot fo other nazi stuff Like I like the look of their uniforms (lets face it theyr where much neather then the allied ones, even designed by Hugo boss I believe), I dig the look fo the Tiger I and II tanks and the Messerschmid 262 plane. Does that mean I sympatizise with these ideas? No I just think this stuff looks nice :p

Anyone's opinion on freedom of expression aside, imagery resembling Nazi symbolisms is forbidden in some jurisdictions, especially the ones close to this part of history. How this is handled by media with international reach is just as different. But whichever the environment, you'll be answering questions forever. Choose wisely.

People today will always put the double S lightning symbol together with the wwII and the cruel, inhuman actions performed by the former users of that symbols. Its inevitable that the majority of people will assume you sympatizing with this group and their actions when you use their symbols even if you dont.

Imho this will cause more trouble than its worth having over a logo but its up to you.

I mean we could open it up to some other people's creative skill.Forexample he could make it silly shithead and instead of a lightening bolt he could just use a piece of dung does anybody else have any suggestions ?

No.... just no. I mean really? just... this is literally the symbol for the most cruel, inhuman, hate filled group of people in modern history, why oh why would you want to be anywhere near there imagery? There is no way anyone anywhere will assume anything other then to associate you with that group of people regardless of what meaning you infer to it.

Common sense, use it.
 
I have been accused also of racism because using white in my forum name, as some kind of white power warrior or something like this.
Dont worry about SS, there is SOC ingame with name CCCP which is atleast as bad (if not worse) as i dont see any Drittes Reich or Großdeutsches Reich ingame.

In my opinion it should all be allowed or all be disallowed, i doubt using SS in your symbol gets you in any trouble. Even swastika without Nazy German flag could/should be considered OK.


NB! any members of CCCP please do not be offended, but i know many easter europeans see CCCP as symbol of evil and repressions. This post is just to show that there are no clear regulations ingame and SS surely should be less offensive than CCCP.

German White Angels
Omerta

And many more should have also made these threads? As i know i can very easily find someone who is offended by those names..

If ban SS what next? AH as auctionhouse shouldnt be used anymore because AH could mean A.Hitler. Number 88 should also be banned, 18 also, 14 also...

This is clearly some new trend of oversensitive ppl, aslong as they are not hurting someone, let them be whatever they want to be.
 
If there are only the letters SS doesn't mean anything more than that we use this typo every day ingame!

But if you put those letters in a logo who directly refer in that "black page" of modern history.....then you will face the consequences.
In my opinion, choose something else anyway, there are infinite options (like the stars in the sky!) and you focus only in one point.

PS. Even this "Debate" thread itself can answer your question! There is still an issue with use of those letters as title!
 
I'd suggest some letters used to denote sh in alphabets other than Latin:

well early morning I was just upset cause I rly liked the SS symbol and I ahd a cool idea on what to do with it that's it. It's been over 50 years peopel openly write objective books and movies about nazi germany. How is this still offending people? people joke about Isis even now and they are wiping out whole groups of people aswell. I see the isis emblem turning up everywhere how is this any different?

I won't make it into an emblem I just hate it when I got a nice idea in my head and it is turned down cause of shit like this.

the nazis, Isis, the sovjets,... all did some crazy cruel things do we realy have to drag all of that with us into the present? they all existed and did these things deal with it. Not speaking about it or forbidding symbols of them well just make it more likely soemthing like this will happen again.

Thats basicly my concenr not wheter or not I will take some nazi symbol.

If that were the case nobody would care anymore, but today at this minute and all over the world some people still wish for a second hitler and want to replace our goverments with the national socialism. They utilize those wwII symbols for their ideology and this is why it is still not forgotten because it is a current problem.

You read about this party: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Dawn_(political_party) and then you decide if it happend 50 years ago, or if the same kind of ideology still is active.

Most people who attended history- and social sciences classes will probably agree that the symbols used 1935-1945 has been "inherited" by new parties with a simular agenda to the parties that used them back then; and would agree with it being a bad idea to promote use of those symbols.

Well I'm German and when I was in school the guilt trip was shoved down our throats ad nauseam, and they are still doing so, regardless that nobody alive today has had anything to do with it. Those symbols had their own aesthetics, yes. They were drawn from pre-christian history (the swastika is an ancient sun symbol, and the S-rune was simply part of an early alphabet - there is much more to it ofc which can't be laid out here).

We cannot display these things again into the foreseeable future because their abuse weighs just too heavy. It is a part of culture which got cut out of our flesh when the ideological cancer got operated which caused this evil to happen. One may hold a more relaxed opinion about it nowadays (I'm not making a case for either side, as this forum is not a suitable venue), but there is no help for it, you will run into unpleasant discussions wherever you go with it. It's your decision, but don't say you haven't been warned.

I vote no, bad idea. I think the temptation to use the symbols, for many people, comes from a desire to borrow the energy attached to the symbols, perhaps they want people to fear them or they want to project a bully presence. But the symbols will always have that baggage attached. They will always have the same significance. I would opt for creating a logo to represent you and build charisma and reputation around your own unique logo.

my wife's german and she said the same, she basically said the schools made you feel like crap for been german

Okay, let's be constructive. Your name doesn't actually start with "S", but with "Sh", which is a different sound for which no single letter exists in the basic Latin alphabet. Why not consider using the proper sign:
