If your pvp icon is orange your in pvp. You said icon was orange. You were in pvp. also that’s not a profitable exploit, there is zero potential gain from it. Just pure losses wasting ammo for “skills” that you would have gained if you shot a mob for loot. what you described is a minor bug...
