A huge fossile egg from the by now extinct elephant bird has been auctioned in London. This 'small item' raised, recalculated, over 78.000 euro, more then double of what was expected.
The auction house Christie's had estimated to sell the 30centimeter egg for 35.000 euro at max. An anonymous buyer became the new owner after ten minutes bidding by phone, against other interested people.
Elephant birds used to live on the African island Madagascar. They have been extinct for hundreds of years. The auctioned egg would have been discovered in the 17th centory or earlier. The birds looked like todays austrishes.
The eggs are about hundred times the size of chicken eggs.
