Best skill sets for a duo just starting out?

Hi, and it's good to meet you all! My wife and I are considering dipping into the Entropia mix but we thought we'd prepare by watching a few guides, getting the lay of the land before we go throwing all our PED down an endless black hole of despair because we don't know what we're doing!

I thought I'd ask the community what set of skills would be best for us to focus on in the beginning--skills that as a duo will complement each other and ease different aspects of the game for each of our characters as we specialize in certain things. We both have computers that can run the game, so we can play simultaneously.

For example, does it make sense for one of us to be a miner (which I'm interested in), while the other focuses on crafting? And does it make sense for one to be a primary combatant while the other focuses on healing or extracting resources from kills, or both?

All of this with the idea in mind that we're not made out of PED, but we are interested in paying a sort of subscriber fee of $15-30/month depending on how much we enjoy the game, and we just don't want to waste this money through a lack of focus or a set of skills that don't compliment each other well.

Has anyone out there got a good husband/wife or other kind of duo worked out as far as skills go? I'd love to hear your plan and your thoughts if so!

Thanks!!

Yes, we'll be playing simultaneously...I'll add that to my original question.

I see...so both specialize in combat skills and maybe have one do some sort of healing skills? Please understand that my understanding of how the skills are laid out is pretty rudimentary at this point! I'm trying to research, though :)

I wasn't sure if mining could have some teamwork component to it, though, so that answers that for me, thanks!

I would say search on the forums for Alaina Bonnie Knight (Alainax) and John Black Knight (JBK), they do quite a lot together and make a great team in the game. They can prob give you some pointers about how to make the most of EU together.

Welcome to Entropia! As above team hunting would be fab. To start with its best to both do a bit of hunting and healing until you get a bit more skilled and can specialise. For hunting you would after a while have to start thinking about whether you want to go BLP/laser/fist/swords mindforce etc, for healing there are faps and mind force, you can of course use both.

I recommend the gold or platinum packs from the webshop to give you a good start in the game.

I play with my hubby, both been 10+ years, there are a few couples in the game and it seems to work well. :) You can specialise within a team also, like one having the range, the other having the DPS. Or one being able to tank with a certain armour on a certain type of mob, and the other being a tank for the changed damage etc. Its all very complex but thats the best bit!

Mining: You can of course branch out and mine a larger area, mapping where certain resources are much faster when you are two.

Hunting: In the beginning you'll do some solo grinding, but later on you can tackle bigger mobs easier with two people, because you double your damage per second (important), you'll get hit less (mob alternating hits), and cost to kill per mob will go down so that loot composition improves. You can also alternate healing and have other strategies this way.

This is good information, thanks a bunch!! It's good to see that playing as a duo is viable. We're not sure if Entropia is for us, yet, but we're looking forward to finding out, and these responses from you helpful folks are encouraging!

Team hunting as mentioned is one of the best ways forward in amassing skills.
I would caution to not use your limited peds in buying skills , but to instead do the work of collecting skills yourself by hunting.
There will undoubtedly be some that disagree here , but my experience tells me the process itself of collecting the skills , is what keeps you from pushing too far and too fast forward , until you are actually ready. This game can swallow up any amount of money thrown at it. Knowledge and experience are everything in Entropia.

Duly noted, sir, thank you!

I definitely don't want to get into the habit of buying my way into the game when a little time and effort can earn the same thing.

And I dig your quote; that one has always stuck with me and is so true!

Welcome to Entropia.

You know they refer to a boat as “a hole in the water that you keep throwing your money into”? Well, “throwing all our PED down an endless black hole of despair” is a pretty good description of EU

You’re ahead of the curve already

You are not encouraging us! lol

But you are being realistic and I appreciate that. From what I can tell the game may not have the "fun factor" to support us spending much time or cash on it, but I'm trying to give it an honest effort (after educating us before we take the dive, as I mentioned).

Jabbering, being friendly, not ripping people off goes much farther than any skill.

In the beginning it will not cost you that much, because with low level weapons you ar not able to cycle a lot of PEDs :D
Unles of course you are using things that are not at your level, some unlimited things may look good, but are a money sink because of decay or level needed.

Take it slow, read alot on Entropia wiki, dabble a bit with all weapons to find the one you would prefer.
Explore the planets, do the quests and you have enough to do for one life time.
Find a good mentor and a good soc and dont see EU simple as a game.
It is more like a very risky investment, unless MA goes broke or sells itself off, it could last long enough for generations.
They are surely not planning to shut down the servers because they want to make something new

ans sometimes the "fun" is looking at your bankroll and get almost a heart attack from the spending :D
Set yourself a fixed budget, 50USD per month can last a very long time in the beginning.

Analyze the market to reduce the costs, dont let the trade terminal be your best customer.

I think the real "fun" part is the difficulty, when everything you do can be costy, you restrain yourself to be not to impulsive too often (unless you have an unlimited bank account :D )

some folks have issues controlling spending habits, it's easy to get carried away. it's an adults game. it's a hard game. it's a long game. it's the only pc game i've played regularly for 15 years. i doubt i'd start another game if this one cratered.

it's a treasure, to be protected.

It's encouraging to hear this kind of praise for EU when a lot of people throw negativity its way.

I for one enjoy (over-)analyzing things and I enjoy detail-oriented projects and games. My wife, not so much. One thing we do have in common, though, is that we are frugal. We painstakingly weight just about every expenditure of cash in real life, so I'm not so worried that we won't be able to control spending in EU if we do end up enjoying it.

So yeah, for us it just remains to be seen if it's the brand of fun that we'll enjoy over something less....stressful?

I very much appreciate all of yall input; I feel like these things are a sort of primer that every new player should be told!

Your costs of play and success stand and fall with a good mentor, who is willing to spend hours over hours with you, teaching you all the tricky game mechanics and hints and tips and tricks and what not.

For best starting conditions your mentor should be well experienced (let's say pro level 60+) and at best plays this complicated game for longer than 2-3 years now.

When you go for a mentor, make sure he is dedicated to mentoring itself.
Many mentors only try to leech one of the meager graduation rewards they get rewarded, when one of their disciples graduates.
So they often go for numbers, adding 100 disciples and hope that 5 or 10 of them graduate by themself without putting any effort in it.

Go for the mentor who only accepts one disciple and then spends about one hour per day with him.
If the mentor is not willing to spend an hour per day with you, then you can find a better one.

Welcome to Entropia Universe! :)

Some points to consider, by no means exhaustive
  • EU uses Project Entropia Dollars (PEDs) which can be bought at the rate of 10 PEDs for 1 USD.
  • EU has many price points. Find the one that suits your budget.
  • Many people hunt, mine or craft above their skill levels. This usually costs you more money (PEDs).
  • Learn when a mob is paying and when it is not paying. Loot comes in cycles or waves.
  • Resist continuing an activity when it is not paying. Learning to stop or change activities is an important skill.
  • The game cannot payback more than 100% of the value you put in. For most of us, it's around 95% over the long term.
  • This means you make money from other players by selling items that have markup.
  • If you are hunting, mining or crafting, you should probably consider the markup on the loot items that drop from your mob. Collect these into stacks and sell them to other players or via the ingame auction.
  • As a general rule of thumb, try to hunt many of the your target mob (many loot events). Some people suggest 1000 mobs.
  • To understand what mobs drop what items, get familiar with sites like Entropia Wiki http://www.entropiawiki.com/Page.aspx?page=Main+Page
  • Get a mentor who is dedicated to helping you understand the game.
  • Don't pay too much attention to negative comments you may read on this forum.
  • Do read the forum as much as possible, there are a lot of smart players who have and continue to share their knowledge and experience here.
  • Not everything in this game costs money. Simply exploring the many planets of Entropia is a joy in itself.
Above all, have fun!

That is an interesting question, for a low budget you can do Hunting and Mining together.

Hunting can be done in several various ways:
1. One hits mob (using long-range rifle etc.) and other tanks it (using high DPS pistol etc.)
2. One hits mob (with maximum DPS), and other heals you (whilst using a lower DPS setup)
3. Two hits mob (with similar weapon setups DPS etc.) and both run in circles (or ping pong)

Mining can also be done in pairs, but like someone already said, just covering more ground.
You have to cover those areas multiple times before you can map everything.

Crafting is a very solo endeavour, so I would stick to hunting or mining, exploring as a couple.
One thing about hunting in pairs is always more efficient and produces far lower defence costs.

If you guys need further tips with hunting check out my thread in my signature How To Survive 2.

As has been mentioned above, get a mentor. Make sure they are in the same time zone as you or at least play at the same time that you do.

Seen too many new players get frustrated and leave. If your mentor lacks knowledge or is hardly ever available then ditch them and get a proper one.
