There's a thing that bugs me since yesterday.... I'm a starter miner, so to say, at least didn't unlock the hidden mining skills yet. I'm using the MF-104 finder that has a average search depth of 432.9 m.
Yesterday I had a find at 763 meters. Thats far beyond the item specs, especially scince I didn't max it yet. My efective skill average search depth is somewhat around 380 m.
So how can this be? There's propably an absolutely easy answer to it, but I'm to noob to know it. Please enlighten me :)

The key to the average search depth that is shown is the word average. Yes, you will hit claims far outside of the average both high and low, but your average depth will be right around what is displayed. Using NRF, and even after only about 300 entries, my average depth is about 4m deeper than the displayed average for me on OF-105. Hope this helps :)

It gets interesting when you consider that:
1. different areas have varying probabilities of finding ores at certain depths
2. the probability of finding something at a certain depth varies among the ores.
3. the probability of finding a certain ore differs among finders
4. finders have differing 'affinity' for varying skill levels

but it's all about the bell-curve anyways. but it'd be great to have some idea of std dev.?

Thx for the quick answer!
So the entire magic is - it's like a critical hit while hunting, where you do double damage. Critical hit after droping bomb/probe = double search depth ?
But if this is a comparable mechanism I'm now asking myself if there's a critical hit ability for the mining gear, as it is for guns. Mhm...

Well, no, to put it simply. You can't really compare to weapons since weapons show you the range of damage you can hit. The finders do not, they just show what the average will be. I don't think it is a case of critical depth or anything like that, but more like what was posted above, certain areas will yield certain ores more often, and those ores will be tied to a certain range of depths, that plus skills, plus finder, plus luck factor is where your depth comes in. But even with all those variables (and possibly other variables) MA has determined average depth, and from what I have seen from my personal records, the average displayed is very close to actual.

If you have 10 apples

5 weigh 200 gram
3 weigh 300 gram
one is organic - 100 gram
and one grew behing a leaking nuclear plant and is weighing 1 kg

total weight is 3 kgs

AVERAGE weight is 300 gram / apple.

Same way with finders... Get it?

I.
