Hi guys,

This isn't a really big problem, but it has been getting on my nerves. Recently, i had a few problems with my computer and asked a guy to come check it out...

So, at one point, he said everything is good to go, so i was happy. But, their were 2 icons i had never seen before left on my desktop...

1. nssi058.exe
2. 3c90x1.exe

The problem is: I can't remove these icons :(. It says: "Cannot remove XXXXXX: It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again." XXXXXXX being the name of the program.

1. From my google search, it seems this program is a system information program. Mostly used for memory testing.

2. Seems like a network driver for Dell PCs...

If it helps, i have a Dell XPS and running Windows XP Pro. These icons have been there for over 2 weeks now and have rebooted and shutdown my PC many times since then...

Thanks for all your help, it is really appreciated.

I don't know much about this sort of thing, but if the problem is just that you don't want them on your desktop I guess you could bung them in a folder somewhere... But if the fixer-upper guy left them there they may be necessary so if you want to DELETE them you should wait 'til someone who actually KNOWS posts ;)

Well, their no good. I want them off my computer, not store them away, if that's possible.

Oh, and forgot to mention, if you get into complicated things, be very detailed for me because i'm not that good with computers  .

Thanks.

hmm smells a lil dodgy....

no driver would not let you move/delete it. i think its prolly a virus:
i had not scanned/protected my computer in over a month, and during that time, all sorts of shit strayed onto the computer - all the viruses eventually blocked me out of my own computer - i couldnt even open Note Pad because i didnt have permission to access it (im admin on the computer btw lol) - same msg ur gettin there hooters. and because i was locked out i couldnt scan my computer as it wouldnt let me. i was quite lucky that i didnt have to reformat the HD because there was more than 1 username on the comp (they were locked out too.. but) so i had the option to right click and select "Run As..." - i chose my Admin account and typed in my password, and by doin that i had access to all my stuff again. i scanned my computer and you wouldnt believe the shit that was on it. tellin you this just in case the same should happen to you.

give ur comp a good scan, and tell that guy to stop lookin at porn sites on ur computer ;) the scan should either (if it IS a virus) get rid of those icons itself, or remove the restriction.

Of one im very sure its a network driver.. 3com 90x series, At some point i worked with 905's.

Hmzz, how to erase them. We'll it strange to hear they are still in use.

If you try to delete them seperately do both give you that same error?
If you press ctrl-alt-del do you see and processes running with that name?

Ive had somtehing like it several times on Win2K. Mostly an empty directory which wouldnt be removed. Didn't resolve it though.

I searched google for a sec, and saw it might even be spyware, although i think there could be other explainations for it.. Thus running under a different name or hidden. Ah well, here's my search. Gives some examples of the same problems.....

And a specific case of the 3com drivers problem:
http://forums.thetechguys.com/archive/index.php/t-13894.html Although i dunno anything about 'killbox' this last guys in the thread say to have solved it.

Well, i have done many, many scans since the times those were installed. And the 3c90x1.exe is on the Dell Resource CD, so i doubt that is a virus. The NSSi one, i have no clue where that came from.

And i have no clue how to get on Administrator account or remove restrictions.......

Squee, i have tried deleting them seperately. And i am also running ZoneAlarm's Spyware thing and AdAware for Spyware 3 to 4 times a week.

And no processes under the same name from what i can see. Googled all my processes and they are all things i need or programs i use.

no i meant that it was prolly a virus that was restricting it. hmm might just have to download a different scanner.. is that one ur using up to date?

All up to date. And i use AVG as a virus scanner, use to have Norton 2006 or whatever version the newest one was... And i do all my Windows Updates also (if that helps, i dunno).

In that case its not normal you cannot delete them ;) I'd say check those links :D

Somehow windows has a lock on those file, and it must be triggered by something. But as i never solved the problem with undeletable folders, i wont give tips blindly. All i can say is read up on those links i put up.

The second link was specifically about this problem with the 3com driver. That last post about killbox seemed interesting. Dunno how trustworthy it is though.

I always use Unlocker 1.8.3 when my file systems start acting up or smart-ass tasks get in my way.

Try to login in safe mode and the delete those files from your desktop.

Yep, was just going to say the same thing. Turn your computer on and keep pressing F8 right away, select Safe Mode and then try deleting the files

Okay, i'll try it right now, i'll have the results in 5-10 minutes.

The NSSI is an up-to-date, freeware, hardware information tool. (Look Here) So neither one is anything to worry about. But I understand your frustration. If your are unsuccessful with the safe mode try, I would look into finding out what my Admin login and password was. Most likely these files where loaded under the admin if he was working on it. Also if you want to do another scan Trend Micro PC Cillin has an online scan for free. Just another option. But I don’t think these are viruses.

Okay, so i went in safe mode... pretty scary place :).

And i still can't delete them. Was able to log in as administrator, which i never knew existed... and can't delete them still, looks like i'll have to download one of those programs to knock these programs off...

hehe goin to all this trouble to delete a file :p

The reason i go through all this trouble is because my Desktop is my friend. Anything that i use which is not on my desktop i get lost trying to find. I ask people to come help me find my files and make shortcuts for me...

So, i like to try and keep my desktop clean, since it's one of the very few things on my computer in which i know "how to use".

I used to have some of those in my pc a while back.... those are buggers.... this kind of program usualy sticks to the main sistem after a bit.. best sugestion is make a safe disk with everything you have most dear in your pc and format.... i know its drastics but if these programs leave traces, theyl eventualy come back... unless they were implemented by your friend.... if he did have you asked him theyre origin? Cause if he was able to implement them in he should be able to take them out, otherwise he did you a very bad favor :)

But i can assure you its not a harmfull program... almost sure at least.... the only thing it does is consume sistem power... which is a bugger when youre playing in a high player existance area for example... it praticaly the same as having a fulll hard drive, but with less memory...

And make a full cleanup on the pc while youre formating... if it gets to that.... or ask a mate to clean your pc reinstall windows and blah blah :)

Usualy a pc works better after this :).... has to be done once in a while...

I was thinking of asking you to try safe mode too, but didn't say anything cos the people who had the same problem on that thead that was linked to earlier said it didn't work for them. :)

I also had the same problem with some files that were incomplete downloads from FF and that windows, for some obscure reason, didn't wanted me to delete them.

The fastest and easy way is to use one of the programs above mentioned to delete the file.

Although if you are not at ease to install any program, use the pocket killbox.

Just run the executable point it to the file, and when you reboot the file is no longer there.

Weeeeeeeeee, their gone! I love you guys, i could kiss all of you!

I used Killbox and it was very easy. Although i got scared a little bit because anything besides Playing Entropia, surfing the internet and typing some stuff up in Word scares me :).

I'd like to thank all those who posted in this thread and those who sent me Private Messages, i really appreciate you guys taking the time to help me!

You guys are just the best and one day, i hope to be a computer Genius to!
