k,, this is a weird one that I have never seen before. On my wifes pc, 3.4ghz AMD, 64 bit Windows XP, 3gb ram, lots of hard drive. She was playing Farm Town on facebook like she always does and pc locked up. We restarted and after a couple mins, everything locks up again. I went in and turned off a lot of programs from auto start, rebooted and again it was fine. I did a full av scan, then rebooted and system would not come up, wont even start post. Pulled power cord, let it sit for a bit,, still nothing. I then pulled cmos battery for 15mins, powered it up and post started. I went into bios setup, changed the date, saved and it wouldnt start backup. I pulled battery again, then restarted and let system come up. I saw a chksum error, so figured, the dual bios on her Gigabyte K8NS Pro motherboard was hosed. after telling it to continue,, system boots up to windows fine, exited a couple programs, then fired up the @bios program that Gigabyte has to flash the bios,, it completed successfully but again would not reboot or even start post. Pulled battery one more time then let it boot up. After it came up, she played on it all night with no problems. The antivirus though is disabled now because the bios clock is off and there is still a checksum error that has to be acknowledged when I can get it to go through post. I am thinking something is going out on it but not quite sure. I swapped memory chips around, swapped out the video card, even disconnected hard drive, still wont start post on a reboot. Could a flaky powersupply cause issues like this ? Pc is couple years old but we have never had any issues with it. Not sure what to replace first. Any ideas ?

change the battery

I've recently had a problem like this. It turned out to be a falty RAM slot on the motherboard. For some reason whenever I place a stick of RAM in that one slot the computer refuses to POST, however once that slot is left empty the PC boots okay.

I did try another battery but had same results. I also played with moving memory around but did not do a trial and error testing. I will get a new battery and try checking for bad memory slot,, that wont cost anything :) I should also note that I am not getting any error beeps at all,, system just sits there.

Replace mother board.

Power Supply unit

can you monitor the temperature in the BIOS?

how hot is it running after being on for a while?

Could the CPU fan be under-performing / need replacing?

Been a while since I did PC Support but instinct is saying the BIOS chip is faulty. The fact that it won't even boot the BIOS tells me that is prolly your first issue. There may be other issues but that would be the first to resolve.

Were there are power surges or lightning strikes in your area? If so then it could have taken a hit and just be hanging on.

I'd replace the BIOS chip or just get a new Mother Board.

Ram shall alwys be put in a certain order ex: I have 4 ramchips
slot 1 ram 1. slot 2 ram 3. slot 3 ram 2. slot 4 ram 4.

(1324)<-----

could be different order for different brands.

Just a tip.

Edit: If you dont know what this means try google "Ram placement"

Yeah, I know. This is a problem that came up after a while of using the motherboard and isn't a problem I had to start off with. It came about after a fair few months of usage.

temp is fine according to temp display on the front,, just running at 72f. There are 3 memory slots on the mb, I have not tried to swap them out individually yet to see if there is a bad one. Pc is still running, seems okay as long as I dont try to reboot. Will run another defrag on it,, just for giggles.

As someone said, get a new battery. see if that helps (most likley will)

might also be viruses who can cause checksums bs =)

Is it possible you split a cup of coffee on it?

No? Ok, then I am done :scratch2:

p.s Whats a BIOS?

P.P.S Farmville not Farm town! :wise:

p.p.p.s A lot of p.s's here isnt there! :tongue2:
