In real life I am a TEFL teacher (Teacher of English as a foreign language). I also teach products and services for our economics department. I teach 15 year olds who attend preparatory vocational education classes.
So I was wondering.. Is there a game out there, where the students can learn some English and deal with products and services at the same time.. some game where they would virtually meet other people and practice their English and economics skills..
Well today I taught...

It was a load of fun. It was hard getting everybody's account created, because after 4 registrations from the same Ip-adress , the account creation system told us that the service was no longer available. Luckily the students had mobile phones with 3g/4g, so they created their accounts through there. Some of them just started running and hunting exarosaur, so they ran out of ammo pretty fast before they had done the target practice. Which meant I had to give them some ammo and tell them to do the missions in Thule because else they wouldn't get anywhere. It was also pretty hectic, because helping out 22 students at the same time was a bit hard sometimes. There was also an official helper online there, but my students didn't notice him and walked right past him. Also standard mistakes like dropping actual probes on the floor, and forgetting to tick the ore and enmatter buttons. Some stuff is really illogical in Entropia like operating a vehicle and then having to get out and put the oil in the vehicle storage and then still not being able to move. You only notice this once you watch somebody do it who has never played before.
All in all they learned a thing or two, that losing money is easy and they also learnt some English words like "equip" and "inventory". :)

EU is the last game I’d introduce youngsters to.

Even though your motives were good of course...nightmare scenario is if some of them start playing the game!!!

I think almost any mmorpg would work, all games have some form of economy, and a lot are more forgiving then EU if you make mistakes.

I think teaching with Entropia was a good choice since your passion and excitement for the game were visible to your students.

It is much easier to teach something in which you believe.

Well done.

Eve Online, it's got an unequalled ingame economy (it's not called spreadsheet online for nothing) and pretty much everyone speaks English. It's also free-to-play though I'm not sure how much market PVP is available with alpha accounts.

Love this! I bet the kids will remember this class for a long time to come!

I've heard of lots of people who have learned most of their English through gaming.

If I'm ever on at the same time and some students need someone to practice English with give me a shout! I'm sure we could do ammo trades for correct English sentences!

Yep I learned English as well through playing games on the internet. I never paid attention in school 30 years ago lol. They should have told me back than that the internet would be here in the future and that I would meet wonderful people! That would have gotten my interest in actually paying attention in class :eyecrazy:

Do you have 22 disciples now?

I believe that the english you can practise online is english you can use online. And if in a gaming environment you will meet shit loads of abbrevations tied to the particular game. Kind of useless if you will try that irl. But something that I have seen is that people are not shy of trying to chat in english online. Just look at the Rookie channel. And I very rarelly see anyone complaining on someone else's english language skills there.

But the language coming out of Entropia reminds me of Pidgin language. An abbrevated and simplified language formed by trading.

From Wikipedia. Pidgin language:

is a grammatically simplified means of communication that develops between two or more groups that do not have a language in common: typically, a mixture of simplified languages or a simplified primary language with other languages' elements included. It is most commonly employed in situations such as trade, or where both groups speak languages different from the language of the country in which they reside (but where there is no common language between the groups).

But I really like your way of doing it by letting students having fun while learning bits and pieces of english. Best way to learn imo. (and reading childrens books)

Actually the first few signed up through entropiatutorial, so your referral code was used. Only on phones, the create account button was not visible, so we used the " official " website.

Have them introduce themselves on the forums so they can ask questions and learn more about the game. Maybe find an enthusiastic mentor on here that will teach them English and the game. What country are they from?

Unfortunately this forum is blocked at our school. I Will have to persuade the IT guys to make An exception in our webfilter.

You sir are a scholar and a gentlemen for getting your students intereested not only in getting them to learn English but as you said also learning about Economics..

After al,l Entropia Universe could be used as a learning tool, for not only learning the english language (which is starting to become the "Norm" in today's world) but it can be also used to teach english speaking folks whow to deal with foreign languaes as well..

(Sure we have Google Translate, but still people could learn a lot more.. Like Economics..)

Has anyone really today looked at EU not as a Casino, but rather a study in Psychology as well? I found out recently in my studies across the internet, that Loot boxes are nothing more than Stienner boxes and that we're being conditioned to get a dopamine rush every time we open one..(In fact 2017 will be known as the yoear of the Gaming Steinner box* and it will cme to be a lesson to learn..(Especially when geopolitical powers step in to control it..

(But again I digress...)

The point is this. At one point I was running an online twitch stream to teach players how to hunt and even mine and even do market evaluation.. Sadly some people who wer rude and inconsiderate, lost a lot of information the day I quit..9Sad to say all the people who wanted to learn did also, but... I was teaching players who had different ccareers and ideas in games a different approach..

THe problem stems frrom the fact that a lot of humans are closed minded when it comes to what they see in this game. To them it's all about the money and the rewards rather then by learning from their lessons (If you go indoor mining and you're not skilled you will always lose! If you know how to read pattterns you can be able to increase your returns better (Yes folks this game is made of patterns, much like Braille does (Hence my new catchphrase, if you can't see the patterns, you need to take Braille. (And yes I am legally blind (But not totally and in fact there ar e others who are disabled as well, who says that the disabled can't be a contributing part of the community or the world scene? (Hence I go back to that closed mind set a lot of people have..)

The point is this: This game, this entertainment can be used to learn from. A lot of the people I tuaght went on to become successful not only in game but also in real life.. (I still talk to one young man when he's not busy half a world away, and we discuss things like eocnomics as well as sociopolitical and even psychology of the mind seet..

If people really were to look past the money, perhaps they could learn a lot ffrom us scholars and people who educate. But until then, its the status norm..

Oh and if you ever see me in game, feel free to sit a spell and chat. I don't mind.

But keep up the good work, maybe there's hope in this world after all..
