Entropia on Linux

I made the updates to work.
In my steam instalation I run the client loader with wine, it still give an error and close, but before that happen it updates the EntropiaUpdater.exe file.
So afther that I just run the game normally with steam and it fisnish the update and the game is ready to play.

Now I just need to find a way to make automatic screenshots of my globals and everything will be goldern :)

I play EU on linux Manjaro and/or Garuda, easy to get it working with Steam.
If you you have a problem with the update, it mostly cause the EntropiaUpdater.exe is a new file and has no rights for writing and execution. Set it and try again.
If you want to play on the Steam deck its also possible, install via steam and if it is not startable the next day, install lutris and start it with lutris.
A bluetooth keyboard is needed to get in you credentials. (onscreen keyboard doesn't work cause EU captures the controls)
For playing on the steam deck, yes, with the "new" control scheme its possible to play with a controller setup, but beware, it is still a small screen.

Cause there was an update today i traced my steps:
1. delete EntropiaUpdater.exe
2. start the client, it will download the new EntropiaUpdater.exe
3. the download will fail cause of right issues with the new file
4. reset the rights to executable and so on, start the client again

When you say 'start the client' are you talking about the 'ClientLoader.exe'? When I try to run the 'Entropia.exe' directly I just get a pop up saying 'Please start Entropia Universe using ClientLoader.exe'. When I try to run the 'ClientLoader.exe' instead, steam runs for a few seconds then stops with no window ever showing up. I tried chmod 777 on all the .exe files in the bin32 directory but it doesn't seem to help.

What's really strange is that I can run through the installer and it will allow me to launch the game at the end of the install process. I can go through the steps of customising an avatar, but there's no music or sound. Then when I try to finish setting up my avatar and start the game it crashes.

I'm on Ubuntu 24.04.1 LTS and using GE-Proton9-13 which has served me well for most windows only games.

Dunno if it helps you, but i did a reinstall of my system yesterday, switched back to Manjaro, and had also problems to get it running again.
It didnt get started, even after switching proton versions.
But i made the error of using the opensource drivers for my nvidia card.
Cause i was to lazy to cleanly remove the opensource and install the proprietary nvidia driver, i reinstalled again, this time with the proprietary nvidia driver.
And now it works again, even with the normal Proton-9. So, drivers can be a problem.
So maybe check if your vulkan is running correct, or the wrong graphic card or driver is used.

Took a while but after figuring out how to properly switch to the proprietary nvidia driver and doing a fresh install I was able to launch and play the game. I still can't run the client loader directly, but running the installer when the game is already installed lets me skip over everything and get to the launcher. A bit awkward but at least the game is playable.

If you run EU by starting it in steam, you only have to change the steam entry from using the installer to the ClientLoader.exe.
I changed my install path to a more accessible one, if you have not, the files should be in .local/steam/steamapps/.../pfx/ or such, best to search for ClientLoader.exe, the standard path used by steam is a bit crappy.

That's exactly what I tried to do, but it runs for a few seconds and stops. I used a special command to enable logging and spotted an interesting message:

166379.444:017c:0180:err:module:import_dll Library mfc140.dll (which is needed by L"Z:\\home\\Ghost314\\.steam\\debian-installation\\steamapps\\compatdata\\2542266556\\pfx\\drive_c\\Program Files (x86)\\Entropia Universe\\bin32\\ClientLoader.exe") not found
Might spend some time looking into it a bit later, but there's definitely an error of some kind going on.

In case another Ubuntu user comes here with the same problem, I found the solution.

I installed protontricks through flatpack (the package maintained by Ubuntu is out of date) and ran with the --gui option. Next I pick Entropia Universe from the list of games, then 'select the default wine prefix' and 'install a Windows DLL or component' and finally the visual C++ redistributable 2015-2022.

Finaly I got it run with lutris. Playonlinux did not work for me and with plain wine I had this flickering I could not fix (any more ideas? Linux mint (Wilma) I could not find the dxvk.dll on my system to fix it the way mentioned in an older post. Lutris fucks up the install too, after install it creates a start link that points to vcredist and not to client loader :) This was easy to fix. Only thing is -like said by someone already here- you have to hit launch button like mad before the loader goes poof.
Thx to all who have posted infos here.

I haven't played for a while. Now on a fresh Ubuntu install with these 4 steps, the updates work like a charm.

I upgraded my XUbuntu to 24.04.1, which includes Wine 9. While the game works as before, I couldn't see the TOS at start and the HTML-page in the Client Loader.

My conclusion was to install wine-gecko with info from here. Fun thing is that I didn't actually run that installer, but only downloaded it (the files listed existed from the previous Wine-version, no idea if that makes any difference):

Code:
endermigne@runlikehell:~$ cd .cache/wine/
endermigne@runlikehell:~/.cache/wine$ ls -al
total 331280
drwxrwxr-x 2 endermigne endermigne 4096 Jan 18 22:18 .
drwxrwxr-x 36 endermigne endermigne 4096 Jan 11 17:44 ..
-rw-rw-r-- 1 endermigne endermigne 59162112 Oct 14 2023 wine-gecko-2.47.2-x86.msi
-rw-rw-r-- 1 endermigne endermigne 55686144 Aug 23 2023 wine-gecko-2.47.3-x86.msi
-rw-rw-r-- 1 endermigne endermigne 84587008 Aug 22 2023 wine-mono-8.0.0-x86.msi
-rw-rw-r-- 1 endermigne endermigne 84579328 Sep 25 2023 wine-mono-8.0.1-x86.msi
endermigne@runlikehell:~/.cache/wine$ wget 'https://dl.winehq.org/wine/wine-gecko/2.47.4/wine-gecko-2.47.4-x86.msi'
<snip download info>
endermigne@runlikehell:~/.cache/wine$

Then I ran the game and could see the TOS and HTML-page. I didn't see any hint that Wine executed the new file.

All back to normal, the loot didn't improve...

Just to add to this as i was experimenting, i got it running on Linux Mint
I got it working through Lutris with wine + wine-tricks.
Had an issues and thank you to AI it gave me this to run in the terminal.
WINEPREFIX=~/Games/entropia-universe winetricks vcrun2015 vcrun2017 vcrun2019

After that it seemed to start with one initial crash that lutris warned about but i managed to log in now and it seems to work, will have to play a bit as well. :computer::)

🔧 Entropia Universe on Linux Mint – Working Method (2025)

Alright, so I tried to install this on Linux Mint today.
Results? Don’t bother with the Lutris script/installer.

Instead:

  • ✅ Use Lutris, but manually add the Windows installer (from Entropia's official site).
  • ✅ Let it run through Lutris using Wine (I used [insert Wine version, e.g. wine-ge-8-26 if you remember]).
  • ✅ Dependencies like .NET and VC_redist seem to install properly this way, without the usual 95% freeze.

I spent way too long getting stuck on “Failed to install vc_redist.x64.exe” at 95% when using the Lutris-provided version. The manual install works cleanly and launches just fine.

🧠 TL;DR:

Use Lutris as your launcher, but skip their installer script and just run the official Windows installer instead.

install lastest linuxmint
install lastest wine
install entropia through wine
zero problems, works great.

So you didn't use Lutris at all, just wine?
Lutris is a sort of wrapper around Wine. It helps with the configuration and is useful if, e.g. you want to use more than one Wine-prefixes.

So yes, you can run EU without Lutris, but don't start crying when something with the version of Wine that's installed with the package management of your OS stops to work. In this case it's easy with Lutris to use a different version of Wine. With Lutris you shouldn't need to hack configuration files and environment settings manually yourself.

Then again it's your machine :)

I have just installed Zorin OS, because my xeon powered pc cannot upgrade to windows 11. I must say this is the closest to a no problem linux distribution I have ever seen. All windows applications simply install on linux, without problems. For games you have steam, gog and epic and all the games simply install and work perfectly. I installed windows entropia and it simply works without problems. Zorin os is from Ireland, so Europe based.

For anyone struggling with this after the latest update:

EU now depends on Microsoft Edge WebView2, current versions of which are not compatible with wine. There's too many stubs and missing implementation, I couldn't get it to install. This seems to be a known issue.

Dropping the prefix version down to Win7 causes an older version of webview to be installed which does seem to work fine. I was able to get everything working again on Arch with Hyprland compositor using UMU-Proton.

Tyvm dertitus, you probably saved me a lot of headache!

Works for CrossOver (on Manjaro) aswell. Just change windows version in Wine Config to Win7 and the update installs without a hitch

Thank you. Can confirm this applies to Kubuntu as well, so likely all Ubuntu flavours.

While maybe unrelated because they talk about Windows7 as the host, there is a new post today mentioning that the WebView2-installer isn't run automatically for their Windows7 and they had to run it manually.

That's just FYI, though.

BTW, I had always kept my prefix set to Windows 7 and had no problem with that recent VU. I don't know if anything was run automatically.

And obviously Linux > Windows, even though it doesn't automatically mean better/more loot...

Good to know: If your Linux distro enforces changing from X.org to Wayland, a number of things esp. related to gaming are going to break. OBS and Discord are named among applications that won't work anymore, and how soon they can be adapted, if at all, is anyone's guess. There are some ungood practices from the corporate world being pressed through many Linuxes right now. Details found in this video -

I have been using Wayland for years and never had issues with Discord or OBS. I am currently using the Hyprland compositor. If your compositor is properly configured, with a working xdg portal and an xwayland server for an extra layer of compatibility, you shouldn't have any issues.

Interesting. I don't have such a setup myself but thought to share the warning, especially in connection with distros enforcing the change upon updating. This means the information is false or outdated, even though it was published just 3 days ago.
