You don't have to travel to Sweden to hear a sample of its language. Education about any subject is a click or at most a search away nowadays. That it still doesn't occur to most people to actually do that before making their random thoughts public is a prime argument for those who say voice chat will turn this into just another obnoxious, noisy mess. No offence intended, it's just human nature and we all trip over it often enough.

The availability of technical alternatives mentioned above should render the argument pointless, anyway. You can have it anytime you want it. You're asking the developer to re-invent the wheel for zero reward since nobody wants to pay for it, either.

Did I already mention anywhere else that I wish for the ability to unsubscribe from rookie chat?
No, you don't. I simply assumed it might be Swedish because the people who created EU are Swedish, or at least some of them. You're suggestion of doing some research to see whether or not it's Swedish is absurd unless I watch a YT vid in Swedish and I toggle between that and EU and see whether or not there's a similar accent, vowel sounds, etc.

Come on mate. Please try to control your attitude a little better when people don't agree with you. This is not the first time you have had a go at me. Unlike Counterstrike, your success in EU is mostly determined by 2 factors: Your investment and your reputation. The first one is highly dependent on your income and personal situation, and can't often be helped, but the second one can be. You can talk to me how you like, I'm a nobody, but many people hold a lot of power in this game, rub them the wrong way and you may be locking yourself out of some good opportunities in the future. EU mirrors real life in this respect.

Lets summarize the points against this.
1. A few have brought up that this system was implemented years ago but removed because it was annoying, misused or both. I Don't see how a relaunch would yield different results. Only insane people repeat the same mistake and expect a different outcome. All this stuff costs the company time and money to develop, test and implement and if they don't see a benefit to the community then they are just burning money. And at least when you set money on fire you can get some heat energy out of it.
2. Discord is a superior system for voice chat. People that want to chat already use this

Just from these 2 points alone, I see no case for implementing this.

I don't want to discourage you from sharing ideas. I think it is great that you have such an early vested interest in our great game and community. I look forward to hearing your next suggestion. But please, lets put this one to bed.
I've had a go at you? Look who's talking. First you practically assassinated the suggestion I made about having open plots for displaying vehicles and other items and then do exactly the same thing with this idea, both of which have a lot of merit. You like to criticise but don't like being criticised.

I personally liked the in-game proximity chat.

Sure, it was annoying at times having to mute the ones streaming music out of their mouths but it was unique and offered something that most other games didn't offer.

It would be a great addition to offer again, especially if the VR route is something they're going to explore. Sweat circles were always more entertaining back then.

It also always cracked me up when female avatars who chatted so feminine in an attempt to manipulate your economic decisions came out with a manly voice in proximity chat and were then highly embarrassed. We all know why you picked a female avatar and it wasn't for the cheaper armor haha! Ah, the early days were fun.

Might be nice, but it's defiantly at the bottom of what the game needs, especially when there are so many options already available to us. I don't see this happening.

This is a suggestion forum. I wouldn't be pulling my weight if I didn't bring up criticism when its deserved. You get a more productive discussion when not everybody agrees with you, it forces you to take on different perspectives. I make suggestions too, If you disagree with my ideas by all means state your opinion and your case. If I say something factually incorrect by all means correct me.

If you wanted something to critique me on I can come across condescending sometimes. It can be hard to articulate a response without it coming through. Plus the tendency to over explain often doesn't help. So I do apologise if this is the case

In any case, lets stop with the personal stuff. Ludvig loves to rudely interrupt on any bickering's that develop between players. I don't want beef, I am here to discuss the idea. Do you have any new arguments to support your idea? I feel that your current reasons have been pretty much unanimously refuted and there is likely no point repeating them.

There used to be one. Could chat locally, I'm teams, pms etc

It got abused and removed.

Discord works just fine as mentioned above, but rarely needed for regular hunting styles other than for being a bit social (or c1 on occasion) .
Pretty sure it also cost money to use. You had to pay in peds to use it each time.

Every time MA introduces such a new "service", they re-invent the wheel.
Just that MA's wheels are square, crosswise to the direction of motion and require a constant fueling with PEDs at ridiculous prices to move.

Been there, done that.
I didnt understand why i was supposed to pay fortunes for a rather provisional than professional service, which i already had for free before (teamspeak 2 and 3 at that time).

MA barely masters their core "competence", online gambling in a 3D casino.
ALL the "side quests" MA tries out fail miserabely.

just play like most of us do with sound off and listen to something else in real world. ;)
Haha! You are right!
I have sounds turned off since the old PE music stopped playing!
OMG, how long is that ago now??

Yes, proximity chat is what I was thinking!:) MA should bring it back in so that communicating becomes easier and more lifelike. Typing often leads to typos ... I also know what you mean about female AVs in EU often being guys in disguise. There's quite a few, but not unique to EU though.

The VOIP service wasn't popular at all. I remember back-to-back looting a pair of items hunting atrox, I don't remember the exact name. It was a 30-day premium VOIP card, and had no markup. I had TeamSpeak at the time, so I ended up TT'ing them.

There is a probability they might reconsider it with the new engine, several voice chat solutions can already be found on UE Marketplace or developing own code is not as challenging as it was in the heydays. As collecting separate payment for it is pretty much out of the question now, it will need to prove it's beneficial in the big picture, though, not just "because it's nice". The concerns are rather social than technical, and increasingly legal. The way things are going nowadays, a user playing music through their voice chat could ruin everything for a streamer, for example. The idea is understandable but potentially a can of worms.

You looted VOIP cards from atrox? I thought looting carbines from argos or trapudions was weird.

After the initial work has been done, MA silently had to get rid of their coders and fed them to the Atrox.
Since MA is lazy, they didn't undress them before, and some coders had weird stuff left in their pockets, which can still be found today.

Well you know what they say - 'You are what you eat'. All we need next is talking atrox as a strange test bed for revamped proximity chat.

Yes, actually, I believe I looted a few from other creatures, but I don't remember which. I'm probably not the only one. I assume many other people have looted them too. I don't think they were that rare during the time when they were promoting the VOIP service.

Interesting, albeit all before my time in EU. At least that way you wouldn't have had to pay for the VOIP service , other than the cost of ammo or ME for looting the mobs.

Yea, but too much Dododooh? Deedeedee? Ah! doh doh doh every time you type something would drive you nuts. ;) I always wondered what language that is btw? Is it Swedish?
16 years later :D (or is it 17 now? Wistrel will be able to vote soon!) I think it's voiced by swedish actors but made up.

Yes, it must be made up or something... Sometimes I just enter anything into the global chat when hunting just to hear the same garbled bla, bla, bla as a distraction, making sure there's no other green dots on the scope o.c, else they may think I'm going nuts ;) Someone else in this thread said it was an attempt by MA to create an artificial language :)

Might have been... I can well imagine Marco coming up with something like that but I don't remember it being mentioned in the back story. That said, it could have just as easily been a kinda computer game version of Rubarb.

Hadn't a clue about the rubarb phoneme till now hehe, but can see how a lot of them together in varying pitches would sound like chatter.

This also happens when you're in a private chat with someone. The sound is played but people around you cannot see whom you're talking to.

Many people say many things, we had that already. It really took just making up a dozen or so syllables, far from creating a language. The team back then had a sense for endearing details, a significant part of what made this game great at first. It's also doubtful they hired actors for intonating that. Nowadays it might be a $5 job on Fiverr or some such if your team isn't just having fun and in the mood to produce it during the coffee break.

Why are we harping on this? The suggestion was about getting (back) VOIP comms as integral system in the game. There are arguments both for and against it, and the point that it's practically obsolete because external solutions are so easily available now.

Why are we harping on this? Because the rubarb-barb-barb-bla-bla-rubarb thingy that you get when you enter text in the global chat was brought up! That's why! Back to my suggestion, I simply used the term VOIP in the heading because ultimately this would involve some sort of VOIP system, but I don't mean something like teamspeak, discord or any other external VOIP that would be totally artificial. I mean realistic in-game proximity chat/talking.
I realise this would require considerable server resources and so maybe it's not doable (whether or not PCF members agree with it...), but this is what I was thinking of.

Second Life did exactly that. The software is not their own though, iirc it was Vivox. While fully integrated in the game client, I believe the service remains separated from Linden Labs servers (would have to read up to be sure or if something has changed since then). There is not likely any great technical obstacle to getting it into Entropia, as said the concerns are more around social consequences and business structure. In SL it did kill a certain branch of gameplay, but the zeitgeist was against that anyway.

I played SL once many years ago in 2005 when in-game chat consisted of text in 'balloons' hovering over AVs heads but quit after about six months as it wasn't for me. You must be referring to a later incarnation of SL, but at least it's proof that such a proximity chat system can work in a mmo/mmorpg. I just feel it would open up EU a bit and enable more realistic PvP trade opportunities and PvP interaction in general.
The one big sticking point though would be those 'not playing the game' by blaring music and other similar annoyances. No idea how you could stop this...

I wish EU had it now tbh and you could always make-believe that those streaming music are playing pocket radios. ;)
