Hi All!

I'm a long time follower of this forum but have only posted a handful of times in my roughly one-year journey with Entropia Universe.

I wanted to give a little bit of background on myself before going into the hunting setup details, as I think my story may be similar to many of yours and we may resonate with one another.

To keep things short, I'll start by sharing that I am a recovering gambling addict. When the COVID-19 pandemic hit the United States (where I'm from), I unfortunately discovered that my impulse control is a little less than I hoped it would be. Maybe it was the boredom or maybe it was the thrill, but I became hooked on gambling during 2021. Sadly, it cost me dearly as it does for so many others. The big wins were quickly replaced by big losses, and now - in 2022 - I am paying the price of recovery. That is, I am paying the financial price as I work my way back to financial normality.

When I gave up gambling, I knew that I needed to find a replacement to fill the void, provide the same excitement, but that wouldn't cost me an arm and a leg. I needed to find something that I could call proper "entertainment" and understand that I was paying for it without the chance to "win big".

Enter Entropia Universe! A world where, at least in theory, you could skill up an avatar through hard work and grinding long hours, in order to achieve a sustainable gameplay by selling items at markup to other players. If the theoretical premise of EU WORKS, then it is an incredible sandbox for individuals to learn and grow within. If it does not, it's no more than a casino - and I've had my fill of casinos.

I say all of the above to accomplish a couple of things:

1) I hope that by sharing my story, you and I (gamblers, that is - for those of us who are) can keep each other accountable as we daily walk the road of recovery.

2) To cover what I hope (and have to believe) is true about the game - you can win through hard work with markup.

3) And to paint the backdrop for the plan I am about to lay out next.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I am starting by withdrawing $4k or 40k PEDs out of the game. I will not make any further deposits for the duration of the year.

Once that is done, I will have roughly 2k PEDs left in the game on the PED card and the following items:
  • Full Eon Armor (M)
  • Maddox 4, Adjusted (Tier 7.66, decked out with two Bullseye 8 sights, Longreach IV scope, and Fi/Ra Co Beast amp, damage enhancers 1-7)
  • Arso Chip 3, TEN Edition (Tier 8, damage enhancers 1-8)
  • Adjusted Resto chip
  • EMT Kit 2350, Modified
  • Lacerating Attack Nanochip 10 (Tier 9, full damage enhancers and MF amp) - recently obtained for added DPS
  • Easter Ring 2019 (left hand)
  • Christmas Ring 2021 (right hand)
Additionally, I will have roughly 21k of ammo to go through and several 1,000 peds worth of materials in inventory.

My looter levels are currently:

Animal Looter - 29
Robot Looter - 22
Mutant Looter - 20

My plan is as follows -
  • Each month, I will post my collective, monthly TT results from hunting
  • I will give insight into the mobs that I am hunting and why I have selected to hunt those mobs (probably foolish if I want to protect markup...but what the hey!)
  • I will share the balance on my PED card and the balance of ammo that I have remaining. Collectively, this should give an idea of my "net worth" in game when taken collectively.
At the end of one year, I will make a decision. If I have been able to play sustainably without depositing, I will continue to play and encourage others to do so! On the other hand, if my ammo and PED card have continuously dwindled, then I will kindly sell my items and bow out of the game. How's that for a New Year's resolution? :)

I write all this to say...
  1. I really hope you enjoy reading and following along with me on this year-long journey
  2. Please, please, please feel open to sharing any tips or feedback so long as it is done in a constructive manner! Replying here or PM'ing me are both acceptable methods of reaching out.
  3. Hopefully, we can be mutually encouraged as my looter levels increase and (hopefully!) so does my PED card.
Thanks for reading, and good luck to all!

Its good to read that you are taking steps. I hope you can keep on track with your goals.

Even hunting can feel like gambling. Maybe you can / should write to support and ask to have a limit on your deposits.

Best wishes on the log and skill progression.

Hello John, thank you for your post. I can tell you right off the bat, that Entropia Universe IS NOT A CASINO. You must understand this. You cannot beat it. In a casino, the machines HAVE NO MEMORY. This is critical to understand. In this game, everything you do affects everything you do afterwards. The game knows exactly how much TT you have won or lost, and it reacts accordingly. This is the only way that it cannot be considered a casino. The closest analogy I can think of is that it's similar to a game of POKER, in that you are pitting your skills and patience against that of other players, however, there is a serious drawback to this POKER GAME:

1. The house rake starts out at close to 7-10% (assuming Looter lv 0, Efficiency 55-60). You can grind your looter level higher, however you will lose ped along the way. (And it takes multiple millions of peds to reach Looter Lv 100, I'm guessing over 10 million at least). You can pay $10,000-50,000 USD for hunting equipment to increase your Efficiency, but you are still hoping that some poor soul after you buys your Ponzi Scheme enabling weapon or the mythical markup that you hope to loot. (The only markup I've ever consistently looted was during a mayhem event. All other monsters drop trash, not nearly enough markup to cover your TT losses). The people claiming 98% returns over millions of ped cycled are, in my opinion, flat out lying, in order to try to inflate the value of their gear so that they can resell it. Believe what you want, but I believe my TT returns, which have never come close to 97% with over 2million ped cycled w/ avg 60-65 efficiency and Looter from 20-40. As my Looter lv went up, I noticed no discernible change in my 92-94% TT returns. What people seem to forget, is MA quoted the average of 97% TT returns BEFORE they introduced the Looter Professions. They essentially reduced your expected return by 7% after Looter levels were introduced, until you got them to Lv 100. I'm guessing most players are in the 20-40 range if that, so they are suffering an enormous TT hit from low Looter levels, which corresponds to the 91-93% return rate so many normal, depositing players are getting.

2. You are competing in this POKER GAME against people with a significant advantage over you. I'm talking about an easy 5-7% advantage, every single hand you play. Imagine that every single time you have Jack Ten off suit, theres guaranteed to be 3-4 people at the table with a better hand. You cannot win in this environment.

3. Your expected TT return, with lv 30 looter (7% - 2.1%), and Efficiency of 70 (7%-4.9%), is going to be -4.9% from your looter level, and another -2.1% from your Efficiency assuming its at 70. This will give you an expected TT return of 93%. The only markup in the game I've found that covers a 7% TT loss is during a Mayhem event, and that's assuming that you have the patience to grind until you get a rare token and sell an Amp, or grind for 1-4 years and sell one of the weapons (this would involve you holding onto an enormous amount of tokens, over $10,000 USD worth, which means on paper maybe you will have profited but if you don't have the bankroll or patience to withstand the withering TT losses you will suffer while grinding the tokens, you may give up and sell the tokens for 5ped/pill to the nearest Pill purchaser.

4. It's obvious that Mindark expects most of us to just keep depositing, regardless of the results, due to our misconception that we can hit it big. YOU CANNOT CONSISTENTLY WIN. EVER. You are competing against other players, plain and simple. Entropia Universe is an ECONOMIC PVP GAME. Plain and simple. Once you understand what the game really is, you will stop trying to get a gambling fix from it. If it's fun, by all means keep playing. But don't think that it's something you can profit from. Almost every poster who has claimed profits, HAS TAKEN THOSE PROFITS FROM PEOPLE LIKE YOU AND ME, the ones who consistently deposit in the "hope" of eventually winning, or people who just like to shoot virtual monsters and aren't overly concerned about the amount of money they spend doing it.

5. As far as that "luck" fix, you can get a random element fix from afk crafting the ep1 blueprint 24 hours a day. Every once in a while, when you want a fix, you can check the results of your crafting. Occasionally, you will get something tasty, like a blueprint with markup or a decent multiplier. Overall, I've found the TT return rate, of ep1 crafting, to actually be close to 97.5%. I've heard that mining has decent TT returns also. HUNTING DOES NOT. Hunting requires you to invest THOUSANDS of dollars, and hundreds of hours, in order to even be close to competitve. Why they designed it this way, I have no idea. The high cycle winners in this game are not the ones that are keeping the lights on. They are taking money from your wallet. Hunting should be extremely easy to get 97.5% back, just like crafting and mining are. Instead, they have made it an abusive, exploitative endeavour where some very few people (those with Looter levels close to 100 and Efficiency of 90 or higher), receive a much higher return than the people that are actually depositing into the game. A five day old new avatar can run the ep1 blueprint and get the same results that I can with lv 24 in Mech Engineering. I'm giving him/her five days to max the blueprint skills needed for it. They can also max the F-105 finder rather quickly also.

6. Your biggest problem is your Looter level, and there is no easy way to get this higher. For every one million ped you spend, you can expect to lose between 50,000 - 70,000 ped. Maybe you get some nice markup to cover some of that, but I highly doubt you will get enough to cover all of it. And lets say after one million ped cycled, you have gained your Looter level to 45. Now the next million, its at 54. Then 62. Less each time, as the higher the level, the more is required to cycle.

7. Why did I write all of this? Because you could go on tilt, at some point, once you realize your TT returns are not what you were hoping for. This could lead to some self-destructive behaviour, and I am hoping to help you avoid that. If you understand the odds, maybe you will reevaluate your position. By all means, play the game for fun if it's fun for you. But don't treat it like a casino. It is much worse than one if you are trying to get a gambling fix. And it can lead you to actually do real life risk taking endeavours you wouldn't otherwise because you are upset with the results of the game. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

8. What is my suggestion to MindArk? Make hunting give the same expected returns as mining and crafting, around 97.5%, right out the gate. No more average 90% returns for the new player, and 93% for the ones who have deposited thousands of dollars. It's insulting to us, and we are sick of it. We are not going to take it anymore. Fix it, or kill your game.

Wow, is that a joke ?
Hunting can't be worth for low players? That just mean YOU don't know what to hunt. Or don't have level to hunt. Many mobs have MU, and largely enough MU to cover losses ..

GL for you gambling addiction, really hard to beat, i know that..

My advice to you: sell everything, cash out, leave and never look back.
Trying to sensibly play EU with a gambling problem is like going into drug rehab with a pack full of heroin in your luggage; it's just not gonna end well.

Just my 2 pecs...

Without revealing what I hunt/do that is profitable, I can say factually this person is very wrong about most of the points regarding profitable hunting here. There are plenty of mobs /activities universe wide that have solid mu if you do the research on what to hunt/sell/craft/mine where and when, nobody is going to tell you what these are as it would be self defeating but when you have numerous players in this game who have been around for a very long time playing in the black the whole time you can be sure the game is winnable with the correct formula.

Just my 2 pecs...

Bruud is right, unfortunately your demons will catch you sooner or later mate. Whatever your decision will be i wish you best of luck.

The road to hell is paved by EP4 clicking
you were given a chance.... you got 23k from GAMBLING a BP
sell the explosive priojectiles card and go on with the plan
or this is not a detox gaming.. it is perspectively a risk
just my 2 clicks

I hope you can find a good support system to deal with addiction. I understand it is a long-term struggle to deal with. As others have said, there are many temptations in EU that make it less than ideal as a support system. That being said, there are plenty of other ways on the internet now to gamble money away so I don't think that's just a problem with EU itself. Do you have a good support system/group in real life?

You should start a society for gamblers like yourself, maybe you could encourage each other and reminding each other not to waste money on high risk stuff like EP4 etc. Strating and promoting a society might take some time of your hands to not spend money but to bring people together to help and support each other 😉

First off, I want to say thank you to everyone for their comments and advice - I can tell that it all comes from a place of love and care, and that means a lot to me. I am grateful to say that I have been "clean" from gambling (online slots, in-person casinos, etc.) for some time now, and I attribute much of that success to having an outlet like EU to help me shift the addiction from something harmful to something I can call "entertainment" and understand that I am paying for - like all good entertainment is.

Gambling certainly is a troublesome problem that many deal with, and I would be happy to share my personal story with anyone who wants to connect and be encouraged. We can all be free! Now, I'll address some specific comments:

I completely agree, as a matter of fact, and the EP4 blueprint is on auction. It felt too much like the old-school gambling I had become accustomed to, and it saddens me somewhat that MA has allowed its existence to perpetuate in the game. So, it is gone for my avatar.

I hope you can find a good support system to deal with addiction. I understand it is a long-term struggle to deal with. Thank you for your kind words! I certainly do have a solid support system in place around me. For me, the most important part of "getting free" has been coming clean about my addiction to everyone that I love - my family, my girlfriend, my faith community, close friends, etc. - and more than anything I have found encouragement rather than shame, which has been a huge blessing to me.

You should start a society for gamblers like yourself, maybe you could encourage each other and reminding each other not to waste money on high risk stuff like EP4 etc. Strating and promoting a society might take some time of your hands to not spend money but to bring people together to help and support each other 😉

You would be surprised how many EU community members have already reached out to me. It's encouraging to encourage and be encouraged by those around you! Like I said above...anyone is welcome to connect with me personally. I'll even give out my cell # for those who are struggling to have someone to talk to as needed.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All that said, I withdrew the bulk of my in-game assets today, including the EP4 hit I obtained before listing the EP on auction. It came to roughly $4.1k, and I am thankful to be continuing this journey with you all as we test and learn whether this game can truly be a win-win for we the players as well as Mindark, the platform provider. Total PED Cycle - 11779.89
TT Return % - 149.29%

Yes, I know this TT return % number is ridiculous. However, it is over a very short period and is due to the fact that my Society leader, Sulje, and I had the pleasure of hitting a relatively big multi on the Megaladon on Next Island.

Take care all and God bless!

Edit - just realized that my math was wrong on the TT % shown in the post above. I accidentally was not including the repair costs in the "PED Cycled" tally for the divisor. With that change, TT return now sits at 93.67%. That seems more right given my looter levels and efficiency!

I'm excited to share the month-end update for January soon! It's been a great month. I think you all will like the format of the read as well - I've been thinking through it for some time. See you soon!

HUNTING UPDATE:

Alright! So it's not exactly the end of the month yet - we've got a few days to go - but I am planning on taking some time off from the game to go ski the outdoors of North Carolina and read some good books! So, I figured I would go ahead and put up this month's post for you all to (hopefully) enjoy.

As I mentioned earlier, January was one of my best months in-game ever. I'm so thankful to the many people who reached out to me to show me how to play the game correctly and sustainably after my first post. I'm sure that many of you will be friends for years to come, and hopefully there's more friends waiting to come out of the woodworks!

Without further ado, here are the full - assuming I don't hunt any more - hunting results for this month. Don't worry, dear friends - I haven't included the MU gained from each of these mobs so that people can't gain TOO much from these posts without doing the learning themselves:

Lowest Looter - Mutants (23)

Biggest hunting win for the month --> Hitting a 5,508 PED HOF on a Myrinian while hunting for Sinews. While I did not get a single sinew this month in all my hunting, this was my largest hit ever and served as a reminder that...when you hunt for the MU...anything else is a bonus!

Biggest hunting mistake of the month --> Feeling pretty good off that HOF, I decided to run the Smuggler Mech mission in Arkadia Underground in large part by myself not once but twice. Over those two runs, I cycled nearly 14k PED between ammo and repair costs and had an abysmal TT return of around 87%. That 5% tax hit me hard! Lesson learned - don't hunt in taxed areas, especially over long periods.

MINING UPDATE:

NOW, I know that this is a hunting log and so it shouldn't include too much about mining/crafting, but I plan to provide a "Net Worth" update component to each of these blog posts each month - not to brag but to hopefully show what's possible - and mining/crafting play a large role in the final figures.

SO, I'll simply say that I am an avid miner in addition to hunting, and I had a great month there as well:

Mining PED cycled - 6,279.50 PED
Mining TT return - 10,201.99 PED
TT return % - 162.47%

Suffice it to say...mining is alive and well. While I recognize that most months probably won't be this good from a TT-perspective (and much of that may be due to other miners staying out of the loot pool with the Dec. 3rd mining update), it's definitely possible to make it as a miner after markup.

Crafting was a de minimus contributor to overall monthly profits.

NET WORTH UPDATE:

Liquid PED - 2,242.92
Universal Ammo - 4,939.33
Items held for sale (at cost/TT value) - 13,754.93 - this figure is mostly understated when accounting for MU/actual resale value
Arkadia Moon Deed - 135
Arkadia Underground Deed - 34

Total Net Worth for January (Excluding Armor/Weapons/Utilities/Chips) - 20,937.18 PED*
*Again, I want to be clear that I do not provide these figures to brag - I recognize that each player will be able to invest more or less time and money into the game. However, I want these updates to be encouraging to readers by showing them whether you can (or can't) play sustainably and even profit without depositing. I believe that the "Net worth statement" will do exactly that by showing a delta from month to month.

OTHER LEARNINGS THIS MONTH & GOALS FOR NEXT MONTH:

Mindforce is awesome - enough said. Still looking for the Lacerating Attack Nanochip 11...somebody PM me ;)

February goals--

  • Access Crystal Palace Cave
    • Roughly 20% of the way there
    • I hear that there's markup to be had there, but I hate that you have to go through so many Aurli in a taxed area to get there :(
  • Complete the Moloch Depths Mission
    • Great White sharks - done
    • Desert Crawlers - 80% done
    • Screechers - 20% done

HUNTING UPDATE:

Alright! So it's once again not exactly the end of the month, but I usually like to take some time away from the game towards the end of the month to refresh before diving back in later.

Similar to January, February has proven to be one of my best months ever.

Without further ado, here are the full - assuming I don't hunt any more - hunting results for this month.

Important note: I failed to track one hunt for Paneleon because I wasn't sure (at the time) how to account for cycling shrapnel mid-hunt. I've since accounted for that, but my results were likely a little bit better than what is shown below because I got a lucky 773 PED HOF on one of those.

Total PED cycled in January since tracking - 23,742.27
TT Return % - 89.92%
Highest Looter - Animal 39 (+4 from last month)
Lowest Looter - Mutants (26) (+3 from last month)

Biggest hunting win for the month --> Hunting was quite a bit slower for me this month. Mainly focused on mission chains, I cycled close to 25% of the PED that I did during the month of January. Biggest win was a 773 PED HOF on a Paneleon, but not much markup was found there.

Biggest hunting mistake of the month --> No major mistakes this period, just a dry period (from a TT-return perspective) that is. Wasn't able to procure much in the way of MU this month either.

MINING UPDATE:

February was one of my best months ever for mining.

Mining PED cycled - 43,078.50 PED
Mining TT return - 59,794.60 PED
TT return % - 138.80%

I have two important points that I need to make here:

  1. First, I want to point out a "flaw" in the way I track TT returns. In reality, I track costs by including MU in the TT component of my total cost. This is true regardless of which amp size I use. I do this because I care more about my cost relative to my total return than I do about "TT-return". While this may make some legalists out there angry...it works for me and shows me where I actually stand. It's admittedly a misnomer to call it my "TT-return", as my TT-return would be higher otherwise.
  2. Interestingly, I wanted to share my TT return % after I hit the 22k HOF mining earlier this month: 83.27% on 32.3k cycled. In other words...if you get a big HOF...it might be time to lower your amp size for some time.

NET WORTH UPDATE:

Liquid PED - 1,051.68
Universal Ammo -127.80
Items held for sale (at cost/TT value) - 14,921 - this figure is mostly understated when accounting for MU/actual resale value

Changes over the prior month:
-SOLD all Ark Underground deeds and Ark Moon deeds, transitioned to Ancient Greece deeds (859) - I believe these are the most undervalued deeds in the game based on their ROI, but feel free to disagree with me.

Total Net Worth for January (Excluding Armor/Weapons/Utilities/Chips) - 16,100.48 PED*
-Net worth change = (-4,836.70)
-While this seems bad at first, I would note that I made a $1,000 withdrawal during this month after my big mining HOF, so I can say that I "won the game" for February with confidence.
-Still, bankroll management will prove to be crucial moving forward if I'm to continue this log without making deposits for the duration of 2022. I plan to sell some bigger ticket items during March so that I can manage my bankroll with more latitude while mining through this downturn.

GOALS FOR NEXT MONTH:

  • I've talked about this with some friends in-game lately, but I don't really enjoy mining. Rather, I mine so that I can play the game :)
  • My goal for March is to obtain a 5% return on PED cycled (in MU terms) mining so that I can hunt some more
  • Additionally, I'm working through the Zorra's HK mission chain on Cyrene, and I am roughly 50% through the Paneleons. I'm taking them a little slower because I enjoy hunting the bigger ones. I believe this is mission 7 of 13 or so, but I would have to look again. The goal is to finish the Paneleons and the next mob during March.
I look forward to hearing any tips or feedback that you all have!

HUNTING UPDATE:

Is anybody getting excited for Mayhem??? I know I am. I'm going to give my first go at the redulite quest line, so planning to have the coffee on 24-hour IV drip here over the next few days =P

After two great months of hunting and mining, the wonderland of fantasy and delight has come to a screeching halt. Nonetheless, crafting profits from selling damage enhancers in advance of Mayhem has proven to be the tool that has kept me afloat during March, though I find it difficult to articulate exactly "how" since I find the math behind a "crafting log" incredibly complex, especially when you have multiple different inputs and constantly-changing input prices. Nonetheless, I'm thankful to have skilled blueprints for enhancers 1-8; it has really helped me out this month. For anyone who has crafting log tips, hit me up!

Without further ado, here are the full - assuming I don't hunt any more - hunting results for this month (plus a little bit of holdover that came at the end of February that wasn't accounted for in the prior post):

Total PED cycled since tracking began in January: 164,714
Overall TT Return % - 94.05%
Highest Looter - Animal 41 (+2 from last month)
Lowest Looter - Mutant (26)

From a trendline perspective, the TT return has been lower for me in March versus February and January. While my TT return was a surprisingly high 97.59% for January (woohoo!) on ~98k cycled, it was a lower 89.93% return on ~23.7k cycled in February and an even lower 88.28% return on ~43k cycled in March. Mayhem should be mighty interesting! I plan to hunt almost exclusively through April.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
MINING UPDATE:

March was one of my worse months for mining.

Mining PED cycled - 60,226.02 PED
Mining TT return - 58,480.02 PED
TT return % - 97.10%

I actually laughed out loud when I read this ^^.

Overall, mining return has been 113.27% on a TT basis since starting tracking on ~131k cycled. Does this mean more pain to come in my future? Or is the ability to TT-profit long-term actually there??? Time will tell. Hopefully not, though, since I suppose that would put MA out of business. My MU return % has averaged about 10% above TT return, though I track it conservatively.

NET WORTH UPDATE:

Liquid PED - 3,063.01
Universal Ammo - 8,076.74
Items held for sale (at cost/TT value) - 13,000 - this figure is mostly understated when accounting for MU/actual resale value

Changes over the prior month:

Total Net Worth for March (Excluding Armor/Weapons/Utilities/Chips) - 24,319 PED*
-Net worth change = +8038.52
-Technically, the number is closer to ~-2k (see the next note)
-Sold all AG shares during March to free up PED for Mayhem. Actually made a decent profit of a few pec/share.

GOALS FOR NEXT MONTH:

  • Complete Redulite mission for Easter Mayhem
  • Finish Aurli mission on CP (roughly 65% through so far, what a grind!)
  • Cycle at least 40k PED mining to boost bottom line (hopefully)
I look forward to hearing any tips or feedback that you all have!

You are only one global from having it all, majority of gamblers quit right before they hit big.

What happened after Easter Mayhem bro? I m super curious to see your log. Please update us if you can. Thanks :)

Hey BG, thanks for the kind words! I had to focus a bit more on real life for the time being so I took a lot of what I had out of the game to do just that. In the meantime, I've basically become a full-time miner with the bankroll that was left, and you can check out that log here if you're interested:

I'll be back to hunting more regularly probably sometime during the TWEN event.

Thanks for responding, I was actually reading your mining log as I saw your response. Great work. I stopped mining when they changed the resource distribution last year and I am itching to pick up again, I still got my F106 finder, probably should tier it up to tier 5 then go ham.

hope real life works out for you.
