This is for those that run a webserver... and hopefully this is not news to you ;)

Let's Encrypt offers free SSL/TLS certificates for webservers. No catch, it's not a lure to get you to buy premium services or anything like that. Sponsors include Cisco, EFF, Facebook, Mozilla, and Akamai. Depending on the server type you operate, the script can do everything required automatically.

Also, if you operate a mailserver as well, did you know that SMTP encryption works with self-signed certificates? There's no requirement for signed certificates from a recognized certificate authority to enable email encryption, and for most mail servers it is a fairly trivial to enable once you generate a certificate.
Once encryption is enabled on your mailserver, people using gmail won't see that little icon indicating transport encryption is not enabled.
