Just finished reading this article... er blog... I ran accross on the BBC.

Looks like we will be enjoying some new participants come June of 2008.

This is the closest to a deadline for China that I have found so far... but I could be wrong.

Also looks like second.... err yeah... will also be participating in the china deal.

Fascinating...

Thanks for this update!

+ Rep definitely...

Here's a link (from your site) to the English version of the official site that this article is talking about (anyone else confused?)... ;-)

In other words, the original link above me posted by Lexxy is an article that is drawing from some Chinese site. And this link below will take you to the English translation of that Chinese site. :)

China Recreation Districe

It's confusing, but there's a picture with the mysterious "dotman" thingy... ;-)

Well, there's the yellow door to the apocolypse right there.

I didn't read anything about EU in that article:scratch2:. But hopefully they will be joining us at that same time.

Edit: just saw the first link(thought it wasn't in english) and a screen shot from the auction near that dotman thing on the second link. So Great then...

Thats a disgusting racist remark -rep

I'm asian and thought it was kind of funny, but then again I'm not Chinese so it might be disgusting and/or racist, definitely not PC. Still funny I call my chinese friends that all the time, but of course they retaliate by reminding me of my cultures consumption of man's best friend, and that makes me cry, well not really... more like hungry mmmmmmm

ehh I thought MindArk was preferred by the Chinese government over LindeLab(second life). How come LindenLab got a slice of the pie when Mindark was "the chosen one" ? I don`t get it.

Scanning doesn't always work... :)

The article mentions EU in the third bullet point in the middle in blue, bold letters. ;-)

I actually just thought it wasn't in english so I just jumped to the link from your post which I thought was a translated version, guess I was wrong.

From what I have read, there doesn't seem to be any evidence of Linden participation in this project beyond the blog writer's assumption of "probable" involvement. Browsing through other propaganda/interviews about this project, it is claimed that Entropia was seen in a favourable light because of the lack of pornography. If that really is an issue for the people behind CRD then I can't see Second Life getting much of the action.

So people often think but I have a friend who has said that a friend of hers has 'yellow fever' cause she has a 'thing' for chinese guys. Guess what? my friend is chinese...

Sometimes phrases trancend whatever alleged racist origins they supposedly have and pass into common usage as an easy way to get a concept across.

Its far too easy to throw the 'racist ammo' at people on forums and I really wish people would actually get to know the folks they are 'supposedly' defending first before sounding off random accusations.

Meh, I've got RL asian freinds that laugh at stuff like that and even tell me jokes of the same ilk, as well as ones pointed towards my culture. I laugh at them all, be it about my nationality or my heritage ... not that there are that many jokes that are unique to Portugal or Portuguese. but in the name of humor the nationality can be inserted into a pretty much any joke.

Take your "racist" card and play it elsewhere, kid. My sense of humor is equal opportunity, and I always laugh at myself first.

The irony is that it is usually racists themselves who state things like this.

The more attention you pay to what names used to mean, the more you are compounding the "negative" inflection they used to bring. Point and case, the "N" word - go to a black community and listen to them say it every day.

This is a game, he (AlphaGeek) made a funny comment, which if you had been a part of any community that the Chinese/Asian player market ever entered en masse, you would have understood. Sadly, you don't, so instead you chose to make a small issue out of a single statement. If you don't like it, don't comment on it - There is a little triangular sign with an exclamation mark in the lower left of every post in this forum. Clicking it calls an admin/moderator to it, for attention in potential cases of forum rule violation.

Try using that next time, instead of obviously making a statement for no other reason than to throw some text onto a page, and making an ass out of yourself.

On topic though, it's interesting how you have the Chinese Government which has said one thing (CENSORSHIP) while you have a mega-conglomerate internet company working the other way... bound to be some friction there, I'd wager *confused*...

You need to spend a little more time here on the forum before you start making judgment calls like that. -rep

On topic I am excited to see this coming. I think it will be good for us all no matter who we have to share it with.

Hum well just because they live in China dose not mean they cant speak English. After all you live in Germany and you seen to be able to communicate well.

Errrr... if you all don’t mind... can we get back on topic?!?

This was supposed to inform the community of a possible timeframe for the expanssion of Entropia... not to be a format for a discussion about racism, nor a place to post racist remarks.

So if you can all simply ignore a statement that may or may not be a racist remark and instead give input about weather or not you think Entropia will be expanding come June, I for one would appreciate it.

Thanks
Lexxy

Well, one thing is that seems to be around when the Olympics is, so I definetly wonder if it is as straightforward as it seems. Also, irl as in online, there are always bound to be delays. However, it is not impossible, just pretty much surreal as the article points out. Do they have a good team of tech people on it as well? Its so hard to evalulate the situation with such little information.

If there is a strong commitment to launch the Entropia portion of the project by June then it is an entirely achievable goal. One thing to consider is that they may not be planning a fully integrated service from day 1. If they are running behind on their schedule they can launch a single, isolated continent on the China server in June then create the links to the rest of Entropia in the next update afterwards.

Hmm, Somehow I can't wait...

I see my Axxx amps will increase in price with the potential flood of new players... I think I'll hold onto them ;)

I'm a little unsure on one thing, have MA stated that the Chinese will be joining the same servers as our or will they be getting a complete server for themselves, and also i thought Brazil where joining EU too soon if not already?

Thx in advance

Is it me or does that article say nothing but "I read this on the internet and thought I'd recycle the info here". Bah... if there's one thing worse than a blog its a blog that takes itself seriously. :scratch2:

They didn't see the wallpapers at Bilton then? lol

As I recall, there will be one or more new planets, where the chinese will dwell. So most likely new servers.

Unfortunately, you were about 8 hours too late in posting this article here, and now the third person to do so:

https://www.planetcalypsoforum.com/forums/eu-news/90158-latest-news-china-recreation-district-crd.html

Although, the "blog" appears to be nothing more than second-hand recycled information rehashed from Chris Sherman's original article on his recent 6-day visit to Beijing, and his first-hand conversations with CRD executives:

Virtual Worlds News: Exclusive: China's Grand Virtual Worlds Plan - A First Hand Look

Is it me or does that article say nothing but "I read this on the internet and thought I'd recycle the info here". Bah... if there's one thing worse than a blog its a blog that takes itself seriously. :scratch2:

Yup, I agree 100%.

Check out the following recent interview with David Simmonds, MindArk's Business Development Director:

The MMO Gamer » » Interview: David Simmonds on the Business of Entropia Universe

David Simmonds said:
With the expansion going into China we’re incorporating the CryTek 2 engine. You can go on the website, entropiauniverse.com, and see the Flash. It’s amazing. The new graphic engine is so realistic.

When we introduce the Chinese planets, and when we open up space, the CryTek engine will be include in that expansion, as well. This is expected to be middle to late of next year.

Another exciting thing which is happening, we’ve got game developers—which you would think would be competition to us, another game developer—but instead of them making their own platform, and making their own game or virtual world, they’ve chosen to come to our virtual world and use the Entropia Universe platform to build their own planet, which will have their own rich content.

We are a universe, we’re an open universe, so all of our users will be able to go and visit these planets. It’s going to be really exciting. This is just one of the partners we’re talking to, there are a lot of different companies that are interested in opening up their own presence inside Entropia Universe. But, as I said before, we’re very careful with who we take in. We’re not a three-dimensional website, but we want our users to be interested and want to come in.

David Simmonds said:
With the Chinese planets, because, maybe you’ve read, they’ve estimated that within two years they’re going to be having 150,000,000 accounts and 7,000,000 concurrent users. That’s very ambitious.

They will be hosting their own servers. But, as I said, Entropia Universe is an open platform, so you will be able to travel to these different planets. The Chinese system is really exciting, it’s not going to be one planet, they’re going to have education, ecommerce, gaming, of course, and there’s going to be a lot of different planets you can go and visit.

Some of them will be harder than others for a normal person to visit. That means it’ll probably cost more money to visit some planets than others. You’ll have to travel in space, exactly the same as you would in the real world—hopefully—in the future, we’ve got a lot of planets to go to, some are harder to get to and some are easier.

As I’ve said before, Entropia Universe is an economic platform. Any partner which comes in and uses our platform will have to be under the umbrella of Entropia Universe.

From what we can see, from some of the press releases coming out of China, they’re going to be using Entropia Universe as their platform to come out into the Western world.

i think a sence of scale is being missed here. the China Recreation District is a 40 square mile business/leisure park. that is massive, the size of a town and it will take until then to be built. where upon people will start using the facilities, ie prgrammers, salespeople etc will move into offices to program the new EU worlds and develop the new online businesses.

:eek::eek::eek:

40 square miles... That's... Enormous... That's... Gargantuan... That's... going to be a lot of people crammed into one area...

It would sure as hell would take ages to build

yes but I think the physical side of CRD is just one aspect (albeit a big one) The work to create the worlds is ongoing and while I imagine people will relocate there eventually there is no rush. Also its been cited that the CRD stuff will create jobs. Its not even slightly clear what kind of jobs those are at the moment though...

I personally suspect many will be in the packing, shipping and delivering industry from whats been said so far but with this being such a grand effort I can imagine more or less any job can exist from high level games programmer to the guy who keeps the floors clean. By all accounts CRD will be an epic place.
