This is my own personal view of this year in PE and my experiences both good and bad:
I spent the last part of last year and the first part of this year hunting and mining a lot. By a lot im talking about in exess of 6 hours a day (well when you have an irl situation where ur stuck to a computer screen for work, this makes an easy multi-tasking experience). Unlucky for me at the time, I chose not to skill much in the ring or with a fap and spend my time in the field as I didnt fully understand the reprecusions of that decision until much later in my PE life, and in hindsight would of done it the other way around. Nevertheless, I met countless people who've made pe enjoyable and had a really good time learning the game. During this initial period I wasnt in a soc, and spent a good amount of time doing reasearch on my own by reading charts and msg boards and asking questions, all the while on my own for the majority of the time.
What made me instantly enjoy PE was the idea that it was free-form in nature, insofar as if I felt like hunting then i'd hunt, if i felt like mining, i could mine, but in essence it was up to me to always decide my path unlike so many other games which force you to team or do certain activities along a linerer path.
The progression of vu's during the year went from almost making me quit, to actually seeing real progress in many areas. The 6.x-7.0 time brought some really crappy and buggy things. Anyone remember the vu when there was like no mobs anyplace?? Now that really drove me crazy running around wondering what the hell was I supposed to do? Well I took that oportunity to drop bombs in places I could never of done so before with my equipment and that was cool. Then there was too many mobs in the next vu and mining was out of the question cause in addition to uber spawns, the radar wasnt really working either.
During this period I'd cruise around amerthia thinkin wtf is the point with all this space? There are no mobs here, loot sucks, and not having sc's or tp's everywhere it made things a little hard to say the least especially for a mid level player. Now we see the progression of ava owned la's, and I enjoy hunting on these places when Im in the mood for a specific mob.
Loot ah loot.... Well, its always changed from time to time for me personally. I have in the last year got what I consider two uber loots (although they dont fit in the real uber ATH catagory of today) with countless hofs. But imo, they reflect the true time and countless effort in hunting. I still feel that in some ways loot should be a slight bit less random insofar as time and ammo spent on an individual basis. In that I mean, when taken in its totality, if you look at an ava and it suggests he's gone thru 10 million rounds and loots is below some theoretical statistical average that somehow it is made up to you. It's the low periods which cause you to think maybe I should slow down. For entertainment value alone id be happy getting even 50-70% back which is way less than it would be for playing a casino..but then maybe thats just me I donno.
In general I remain upbeat about life in pe and hope that MA will progess in the areas they have spoken about so that the players can benifit from a better service and have new content to keep them busy.
Merry xmas and happy chanuka everyone and good luck for 2006
