Q&A (September 06 - Q's)

Can something be implemented so that when there are lots of mobs on screen causing lag (Atrax are a perfect example where a group always means massive lag) texture quality is dynamically lowered so that you won't be fighting in slow motion?

repair kit

can we have a repair kit?....atleast for melee weapons...

Buy it at TT for the repair cost or a few peds over

Make 10, 50, 100 and 200 repairkits and we bring it out to the field and can repair our weapons...

The idea of Real cash virtual universe in EU is unique. Is this patented? Or, if not, are you going to patent your product 'Entropia Unierse'?

Q: what is the purpose of the "this mob cannot be damaged" condition, and why can a mob in that condition still damage me?
This is a problem that is costing us partisipants thousand's of dollars every year.

I've noticed for me that the biggest challenges to overcome are often unseen by users while the simplest tasks are seen as miraculous breakthroughs by the end user.

Which feature/function of EU was the biggest challenge to implement but goes mostly unnoticed by participants and conversely what was the easiest feature/function to implement that is heralded as a great improvement?

Try on clothes?

It would be nice to be able to try on clothing before purchasing it at an auction, in a store, or from a shopkeeper. A "try on" button could be added to the item's available actions (info, buy, etc.) that would bring up a window of your avatar, sans armor, wearing the item of clothing along with everything else currently being worn.

This would allow people to see if a particular item really does match the rest of an outfit. I've bought items separately that I thought would look good together, only to find out they don't really match or I don't like the way they look. This has cost me ped because I've had to resell the items, often at a loss.

If this is only available through auction, stores, or shopkeepers, it would encourage people to use those methods of selling instead of standing around yelling "THE OUTFIT I'M WEARING IS FOR SALE" at Twin Peaks because potential buyers couldn't try it on that way.

District System

Hi there, I dunno if you are the right person to be adressing this to, but the lags are really annoying and I was hoping that you could introduce a system like in Guild Wars whereby you appear on a "district" (basically an editing layer) and as a result, you are not on the same "layer" as loads of other players and you dont end up with a laggy computer cos of the machine having to calculate the position of each and every other player and monster as well as your own.

Community can be maintained as you can then choose to move to the same editing layer or "district" as your friends and then go hunting monsters together?

Also i am deeply interested in the idea of selling real world items in the game. i am a 3D cgi artist and as such i want to be able to make prints (and lots of other items that coud be sold in a shop or from a shopkeeper telepad) and sell them to customers worldwide through the game.

i am not a millionaire, so i cant buy an asteriod or whatever!, but if a building is needed to display the goods, then I can make a .3ds file and you guys can import it.

please, pretty please with sugar on top......

I've thought long and hard about which single question I should ask the Programming Team.

In light of this newest VU, there's really only 1 question I now care enough about to ask.....

Q: Why don't you test the VU before you release it?

Current Bigtime Landowners can pull in enough $ a month to actually have a shot at becoming professional gamers, while in fact they usually do very little hunting/mining etc. Are there any plans to make the crem de la crem of hunters able to play for a living?

Maybe better say "Why don't you test the VU before you release it and correct the Bugs you find doing it ?"

I agree once again, why say that you only will release the VU if it passes the tests but then all we get is business as usuall or even worse.

Running of avatar is crap, Visual bugs they corrected make Avatar look ugly, f.x. Nemesis Harness around the neck, switching of weapons/Faps is crap like after last VU bevor first bugfixes so why you dont make a list with all the patches you need to correct the bugs and use this list again after next VU so you do not forget them?

Question:
When do you start to make improved Vu testing by running stress-daemons to simulate the real system in order to stop blaming yourself with so hard bugs like the rubberbanding walking which was implemented in VU 8.6 ?

This is slightly more a suggestion than a question, but it works both ways:

Why do you not have an exclusive testing of new updates using minimum system requirements through an independent service provider and only pass them when they are playable in that configuration?

Yup...some of us are skint; but some of us skint dudes also deposit enough to buy a new system quarterly because we like the game. Would you rather we spent the cash on an upgrade? :dunce:

Come to think of it, 3 months of sweating is starting to look attractive for the payoff.

((There go my Global's for the year :D ))

I would like to see a logging feature for the Chat box, that logs all text on all chats to the harddrive (like we used to have for the friend chat). To be activated on Client Loader Option, maybe with File Selection as well. Is this going to happen?

But it still does, for PMs. Look for chat.txt in your entropia universe folder ;)

1) What is the feasibility of my GPS tool Idea? Will the engine support top down satelite views of areas seperate to that which the avatar is currenty situated in? (ref: Q&A Thread reference )

2) Why is it that when there is lag, avatar ability to hit mobs get's nerf'd yet the mobs hit back without issue? Are avatar hits and mob hits calculated on different servers? Yes sometimes mobs lag in hitting back, but most of the time when there is hit lag, mobs hit fine??

3) In addition to 'You damaged the creature xx' and 'You take xx damage' messages can we have 'You we're a total nub and missed the creature' messages too?

4) Why is it that after some time of killing everytime I go to loot a mob my view gets totally messed up, like as though it's the global animation that forces the view to a specific 3rd person angle, but it zooms in on the avatars head? It can do this quite often and also makes it hard to target the next creature when it happens, so you have to wait for it to clear. It does not happen when when hunting in first person mode though.

5) Is there a reason why when crafting and in the middle of processing we cannot interact with the inventory window? I would have thought a lock on the Craft window only would have been sufficient?

6) Another on crafting; Is it possible to slim down the craft window itself, make it a little more svelt so it's easier to look around and see who is around while falling asleep with the boredom of all the wrist breaking clicks?

7) How soon are we going to get a solution to crafting and colouring that reduces RSI?

8) Is it possible to have something that slows down an avatar if they are bunny hopping like you see in other games (for instance Counter-Strike where when you land you are slowed to a walk for a short time (<1 second) and then speed up again - Note to Mods legitimate game reference made here for the benefit of EU).

Bunny hopping when in pvp is a double edged sword in that a) Sometimes it makes avatars impossible to hit (especially the slighter female forms) and b) An avatar that continually runs at full pace AND jumps actually causes lag, this is something I've noticed over the past 10months or so. Fine the wasted ammo and decay is good for MA but only serves to annoy your clientelle.

9) Can we have a proper fighting Arena which has auctioneer and tt facilities, like a stadium type of building (only a little smaller ;) ). Currently Twin Peaks is the usual PvP focal point but I think a purpose made arena would go down very well for recreational PvP'ing as lag seriously affects all ring matches. An arena with low detail and a simplistic structure (complete with a roof so now flora and geology is processed/drawn and has clearly marked safe zones.)

10) Is it possible to add a ladder/"winner stays on" style match to rings as part of the event system where all participants sign up and then the system determines the first bout and the queue thereafter? I didn't see this in the current event system, although I may not have been looking hard enough.

That's it for now from me. I'll see if I can come up with more.

I think she/he (orkar inte kolla) meant the chat in the lower left corner. That one isn't logged. Which is good in a way. My harddrive would be full of crap otherwise by now :silly2:

OK, someone highlighed to me that it's only 1 Question per person (why?)

So if anyone wants to Reference me ;) go right ahead :p saving no.1 as my ONE question... pfft.

I would like to better understand how Success Rates are used in Hair Styling.

I was recently coloring someone's hair from red to black. The chair stated that I had a 54% success rate. I failed 63 times in a row.

The odds of failing so spectacularly are 1 in 72309129147201477.

Although this is the most extreme example I have encountered, it is not far off from the usual outcomes. The outcomes seem to be nowhere near in line with the probability based on success rate. In talking with other stylists, their experiences are the same.

Since the machine caps the SR at 54%, I don't see any solution -- skills and additional supplies will still keep the SR listed at 54%.

Any additional information on how we can make this more manageable would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you! :) -- Fliss :girl:

My Question

Just wondering why the damn (satans apas irriternade) chat window bug hasn't been fixed yet. It has been there forevaah.. It should be to easy to fix (I'm a programmer myself) , but NOO ;)

And btw, some more info about the developmet of EU would be great. Like, what bugs you are woking on this VU ..

reference akiranblade's post:

Why are you using microshafts coding approach?

Ok heres my question.....

Why are you adding new things to the game, when you havent fixed the existing issues?

Seems pretty stupid to me to add new things while some issues have been around for a very long time.

Yes eye candy is nice, but what good is it if causes so many lag issues?

I think MA realy needs to re-evaluate their stratagy before we all get fed up and cash out.

If all of us "paying" clients stopped paying, MA would be up crap creek without a paddle, so maybe we need to go on strike, and move our money elsewhere.

Maybe if we do, MA will start fixing things instead of adding to the load.

In a nutshell, without us MA cant exist.....

I think I know the answer to this one. The current world we are in is still in it's infancy. The world they are trying to create is much more than what we have to play in currently. People often say that while EU is fun, it lacks depth (I have heard it referred to a casino with a cardboard facade by some) and didn't live up to what they imagined based on the marketing they saw before trying the game. That is because the developers are working the most basic game-systems first, so they will ultimately be more stable. They need to contiue adding things constantly in order to make any progress in the longterm vision, whether they can eliminate all the bugs or not. If EU were already as it was intended to be then adding silly bells and whistles while not fixing bugs would be silly, but that isn't what they are doing. They are still adding things to advance the design of the game. Because of the technical nature and the scale of some of these undertakings they have to do it in steps. Sometimes they won't make sense from an outside perspective. Fixing bugs is hard. Alot of people act like as soon as the developer is aware of a problem, fixing it is as easy as pressing a single button labeled "mistake fixer." Some bugs get solved quickly, some are very hard to track down. So while some customers see bugfixing as the first priority, others demand new content frequently. If they waited to add anything until everything was totally stable people would leave citing "lack of new content" as the reason.

continues......

oh i understand about steps, but hasnt MA heard about beta servers?

In any business venture you never make changes to a production server until they've undergone extensive testing on a beta server.

and when you start messing with peoples money, they get pissed, and justifably so.

lets all keep in mind this isnt a game, its a multi million dollar a month entertainment business, THAT WE PAY FOR.

and yes while a lot of folks want all this eye candy, what good is it if no one can play due to the horrible lag? im not talking about just the users like myself that play on crappy puters, i hear folks with TOP END puters & highspeed internet moaning over the lag and other issues.

personaly, the lag hasnt affect me (odd considering my crappy puter), though i have experienced connection dropouts, mobs that are visible but not on radar, suddenly seeing nothing but sky, mobs that fly away (not kidding, i shot a cornundacauda north of argus and it flew backwards, up, up, and away), horrible rubberbanding (up to 30-40 seconds), i've seen mobs stuck in trees (you cant hit them but they can hit you), mobs that cant be damaged, but again can damage you, killed mobs that dropped no loot nor gave a messege (prior to the latest VU), trade terminal issues such as when someone tries to trade with you while your accesseing the terminal, one of the trade panel windows dissappears, or how bout when your running and suddenly stop due to a terrain glitch? and what about the chat system? i could go on for hours about that POC. or how about the constant crashes when you tab out?

i can go on, but we all know, as most of us have experienced one or more of the above.

and back to the steps thing.....

the correct way to develop software is to do extensive testing and then fix the broken stuff before you advance the project, to just blindly keep adding new stuff while issues go unfixed is conterproductive, and annoying to users.

so i ask again, what good is adding new content if it causes the game to be unplayable?

folks may get bored & leave, its true, but how many more will leave because they can NO LONGER PLAY?

I agree that testing is important, and according to MindArk they have done some testing and I believe they will continue to increase their testing efforts. You can choose not to believe that they are testing things at all, or you can allow that even with testing in place their will be unforseen problems with any software of this scale (of course you can be more strict about how many bugs are reasonable if you have an enormous budget like a space mission or industrial application). Keep in mind this is entertainment software. Even though there is lots of money "in the game," that doesn't mean these are funds available to MA for development. They are working on game-company budget, so you can't expect NASA results.

I think the legal way of looking at this is that the depositors are playing with their money, not "MA is messing with people's money." It would be different if they stole your bank account and you had to kill mobs to get it back... The people who deposit (myself included) should do so with their eyes open. This is their sole responsibility in EU. Let's not make MA responsible for our own behaviour if we want to be reasonable.

And as for the correct way to develop software. I think it kind of depends on the purpose of the software and the current stage of development as to what style of development is best. Obviously you disagree with the balance between innovation/stability that MA has chosen, but ultimately they are in charge. When there is competition between RCE virtualities, they may change their approach, but for now I think they are trying to get as far ahead as possible without getting too hung up on little stuff. Yes, I think the current batch of bugs is little stuff in the big picture, and obivously MA is doing something right or so many people wouldn't deposit. When players lose confidence they will chip-out. If too many people do, EU will die, but if someone chips out and then decides to come back later, they will have to pay the entry fee again (like skilling up, etc.) and they will have lost out on the possible profit from just holding their position in the game while newcomers joined. That is what keeps the RCE going, people choosing to stick it out during development in return for the benefit of being at the top of the food chain. Complaining and claiming to be able to do better/ know better than the people in charge is useless. This isn't a democracy. It couldn't function if it was, everyone would vote for their personal interest. People have to accept what MA is doing and decide if they agree enough to keep their funds in the game. :wise:

............

its just too bad they are wasting their limited budget on silly things like new turrets, loot windows, avatar poses, ect.... they should be using it to fix the broken stuff...

and if you've been in game the past few days, you may have noticed that its quite quiet... players are already jumping ship.

camp phoenix is a ghost town.... even PA doesnt have a lot of folks around anymore, everywhere i've been the past few days has been pretty dead, compared to what it was like just a week ago.

i have spent 12-20 hours a DAY, EVERY day for the past 8 weeks, and i can tell you players are not happy.

the few hunters hanging around arent hunting cause everything is messed up, only the miners & crafts people seem to be unaffected, though several i know say that sales are down since the last VU.

if these things arent fixed soon, and i mean very soon, more players will cashout. its already happening.

oh well, life goes on, and simply put, if things dont improve it wont matter will it?

Marco, thanks for this questions thread, good idea (shut's us up for a while hehe).

Here is my question for your Developer(s):

How is the divide between developers working on new features and those working on bug fixes set as a %?

For additional info, how many developers are there in total and is the team divided into bug fixers and new feature writers, or do all have to do both. If so what is the time divide as a % between new featues and bug fixes?
