Question: Shortblade ammo burn

I am new to melee but can someone explain does the knife actually use ammo because if thats the case what is the big deal with shrapnel for melee users. Like I said, I've only done melee with the tt blade so I am unfamiliar with how it works. Any help is appreciated thx.

Some low tt blades use ammo, like ELM ones that have only 1 ped tt, - decay on such weapons is tiny but the cost still has to come from somewhere. But lots of blades don't.

Thank you. That makes more sense now. I just wanted to be sure before I bought from auction. That would kinda defeat the purpose of what i was trying to do.
