Just wondering if shops are really worth the investment.
I would like to hear from other shop owners and get their views. Shops sell for what about 20k (ped) so have you guys got your investment back yet ?

TA!

Long term use of shops might pay off. but everything takes time i guess.
depends on what you are selling aswell and how many that are shopping, i have no doubt if you keep the shop long enugh it will pay off itself, but non the less, the value of 20k ped dose not decresse either, so for etch ped gained you get from the shop you are +1 ped, isnt that right? :)

I think that is rediculous, there are gazilions of booths empty owned by players and by MA

Shops arent worth 20k peds (although some might be) like in twinpeaks. if you are on the right floor and right angle your shop might be worth a *** load due to allot of visitors.

If you are on the otherhand on a remote island where nearly noone is comming it will not pay back unless you got something worth the trouble getting there, instead of the vast possibilities of getting it easier.

Remember !!

People are lazy irl, so are they in game

Sitting on a chair and having to look at a running char can be exausting ^^

If you get your reps up and a good costumer line to start with you will very much be able to earn back thoose 20k in a short while. a friend of mine has done earned back the shop fee many times over cause of a really nice shop and a good costumer line..

lol, Kiriku...

Also, what about the "Shops" that are run out of apartments. Will the popularity of these decrese the value of the official shopping mall shops? I would like to see more of the "mom and pop" shops run out of apartments get more exposure.

I dont expect to make my investment back like that. I got a shop cuz of the service it gives me.

If I dont want the shop anymore I can always sell it...and prices normally dont go down in EU...and if they do...well then it's just bad luck.

But...well if u want your investment back for the shop on the items/stuff you sell...I guess it depends on what you are selling ;)

Btw I had some shops and I still got one in TI and one Twin mall...I like those two shops very much even though one is closed atm.

Thats the ones I was on about , wondered if they had enough visitors to make them pay off.

Perhaps some (or a lot?) of people buy a shop/booth not because they see it as a path to eternal riches, but because they see owning one as part of the EU experience.
you get to in effect run your own business. Buy (or loot) stock, mark it up a bit to make a profit, and then sell it. Not for huge profits, but because you can, and it might actually be a bit of a challenge, and be a bit of fun at the same time. If you get bored with it, you can always sell the placeon, and probably get more for it than you paid to start with.

Now, off meet a man about a booth.

i bought mine with the specific hope to avoid auction fees. as long as i sell a certain volume i am saving money i'd otherwise lose to MA. the store sales price for me has always been a deposit that i hope to get back if/when i decide to leave EU. i havn't made anything close to the purchase price and as a matter of fact it only covers about 1/2 of my expenses from playing. that is because i sell mostly looted stackables and such, nothing with a huge markup and i don't try to undercut folks i buy from. i could do much better if i was a more aggressive reseller and focus on a different market. but that isn't me.

Shops are worth it, but don't expect your 20K to be returned in a couple of months.

All depends on the stuff you put in it,... etc.

Way I figure it you can sell the shop and get the investment back, even without selling the shop and hoping to make the peds back, shops are worth the money. Just remember location is key a shop in PA for 20k might be cheap but you will make less, while a shop in twin will make you more. Plus both can be resold for the same price as you bought them at. So after all is said and done the more expensive shop can be a better buy.

I own a shop on Amethera, I bought it in auction for 3000ped but will probably get 6-10,000 ped if I sold it now. So I've already made money. I also bought a shopkeeper to increase the amount of items I can sell and again this was purchased for 700ped, now commanding 4000ped. Wish I'd bought more of them at the time.

I get pleanty of passing trade as well as regular customers and I trade only my own finds from minning and hunting.

I've had about 15 sales in one day and my average takings is about 1000ped per week. Now thats not all profit of course.

I view my shop as a 24 hour presence in-game, it allows me to get on with minning and hunting or whatever I'm doing that day, and also allows me to obtain a higher markup than I would normally get if I were to trade at PA, so more profit margin. AND you dont get bored...

What next....

Firstly...I'm not making ped from my shop, rather I sell my own stuff for a slightly higher profit which keeps me going in-game. In fact I've not needed to deposit for about 7 months, but I would like to get to a stage where I can save up some ped to fund further purchases of at least another shop, land and equipment.

I think the only way to make real profit from your shop is by trading, and thats what my next step is going to be but I've not finalised what. I get a large turnover from my finds but not all are high profit margins, or do I specialise in rare items for higher profits...I dont know yet.

I bought a booth

I bought a booth in Omegaton West.

I like it. As others have posted, I don't expect to gain vast riches from the items I sell. But I will likely turn a small profit if/when I sell the shop.

And it is fun. I rather enjoy looking for things to put in my booth. See what sells. arrange it just so. But I'm like that.

So many people get sooooo serious when real money is involved. Have you ever played a friendly game of poker and lost $20 bucks. It is fun.... It is more fun to win, but the game itself is fun and entertaining. And so is my booth.

Oh yes! Shops are so worth it ... you've just got to have the right attitude, stuff and prices.

Shops save you 2.5% over auction fees, so just weigh the auction fee savings against the shop maintenance fees and it's a viable shop if you're in the green. Otherwise, just don't pay the rent like many shop owners and hold it as an empty property investment.

Not only 2.5%, but you can keep rarer items up for a longer time, and you can get a place people will go 24/7 for supplies. Also imo a shop in a mall would be much better, just judging by the amount booths sell per week.

Opportunity Cost

Why wouldn't someone just set up a website to sell their wares? More opportunity to personalise vs having to meet to trade. - Just an option but at $2000 you could put a nice site together with promo's, discounts etc.

i already see shops ofr sale on auction and i followed 1 for a few weeks to see if they sell
started bid at 20k
next week tried 19k
next week tried 18k
then finally tried 16k
when it still didnt sell he put it on auction for 1 ped starting bid
then im happy to say they got bids, but at a given loss of at least 4000 ped
My assumption is if you arent vixen or some other uber crafter you will find your total sales will never reach the 100+ ped monthly rent
The only people making money on malls are uber crafters and of course the owners.
Go into vixens shop or buzz's shop then go to shops around there you will see its another example of the uber and rich get richer and the startups go broke...like so many things in this game

well, the price to rent a shop at the emerald mall per the amount of space you have available to sell from is one of the best ratios. robroy posted a comparison in the past. apartment shops are indeed better yet on a ped per slot ratio, but you suffer from a lower traffic. i am very happy to have purchased my shop at emerald, i have the most item points to work with for its size, my rent is cheaper, and the traffic increases daily. twin and PA may be busier, but they cost more as well. i have little time to sit and trade all day for the stuff i sell and would rather just throw it in the store and wait it out.

i had bought 2 booth, after few months, i sold one to my socmate ( got very little profit cause it was socmate) and he sold it to mandu ( he got more profit than me lol ).
after a withdraw, the game was too hard, so i decide to sell my second booth ( my prefer cause of his really good location and my first booth own ), it was sold to dorsay :D

what i have to say, it s the booth/shop allow me to make profit from his activity and get me profit from the resell of the booth itselft. So it s a 100 % good thing :D

Anyways the worth or not of the shop depend only on the location and the people that the location got. My booth was on omegaton and lot shop owner are very active there. :D

I think you cannot really include the price one paid for a shop if you talk about worth of an investment (if one is not a real estate trader, that is). Rather, question should be if a shop can be prospering business. That depends on the location, stock re-supply, and of course prices. For example, you can say that my shop is prospering, as in that I have sold some goods with a reasonable margin and made a small profit. Then again, I have lots of PEDs tied in goods on display, so in overall I am in minus. In long term that should improve, but I don't expect to get back money invested for the shop itself any time soon (I'm talkind about shops which go for 20-30K, not about the small, cheaper and/or worse situated shops, where that might be more realistic).

Prices of real estate are only rising atm (the same way as they do in RL) so that when one will decide to cease trading and sell the shop eventually, one should receive for it more than invested originally (and that is where you will get your money from your initial investment back, not from the sales of goods in the shop).
