Once again, I love your timing. The community is very upset at the moment (take 5 minutes glancing at current threads and you'll see), now isn't the best time to be asking for their help.

Hi John,

I wrote this:

“Something did strike me from (John K Bates) “Why is hyperinflation such a dire threat to virtual economies?” wonder what he will say about it (maybe someone will record the conference).

Is little contradictory as it seem, because MA took some steps in EU we seen the hyperinflation (not to drop uber gear and armors kind attitude lead to the hyperinflation, rare = expensive) so am bit curious what he will say on that.

“Why is hyperinflation such a dire threat to virtual economies?” one may wonder if someone from MA think it is, then why not take steps to stop it ? ”

Care to comment? Or just hook us up on what you planning to tell in the conference?

Ty for the time sincerely Xing.

Hiya John!

Nice to see you posting here and getting the word out there about EU! Well done and +rep!

True, as some people say, the timing of your request during this somewhat difficult transition to VU 10 isn't necessarily fortuitious but, as these things go, your topics bear scrutiny and deserve to be adressed.

So, I voted...

Good luck, John!

Dan

ps. Oh, and next time you're in Montreal, The Southern California red Wine is on me ;)

Can there be a panel about updating the graphics of a game and then releasing the game in an incomplete form so that you essentially alienate a large part of the community you are asking for help?

I would have to agree about the timing issue, seems like now isn't the best time to get favorable reviews...

GL with your efforts, subscribing...

I see what you did there.

Well guys calm down is not really whine tread.:dunno:

As for you John sry I like to be seduced by political ppl, and you not giving me any clue on what I asked lead me not to vote for you.
Gl in your future enterprise.

I think the whining and poor comments in this thread are completely uncalled for.

For any of you familiar with how VUs work, they have problems - they get fixed.

Good to see you posting John.

GL with this thread :)

Yes, VUs have problems, but this is far more than just that. What was released is blatantly a beta-test quality product that is being passed off as production quality. The fact that the opinions of the players are leaking over into a thread that is totally unrelated but just happens to be posted by a company official just underscores how upset (ok, mad) the community is. Now, back on-topic...

Both are good points and it will take some time and consideration to decide which to vote on. Either way, good luck to MA/FPC on this venture.

This will be interesting.

No pun John, but another bag of :bs: on why, is not going to go down well for those who follow you around as part of MindArk in the media.

Keep it real silicon surfer.

As a side note, I fully understand you work for MA so your hands are tied somewhat.
Please don't take it to heart, it is to invoke thought, not conflict.

Here is a reflection to improve upon, incase it helps.

now for everyone else!!
No Cheese With your WINE!

As things is noe John, I seriously can't do that. If you will wait a week or so untill MA has got(ten?) rid of the bugs in this vu, I think I will. But as of today I can't.

I have no doubt that they will fix the bugs and stuff, but this is just very bad timing. Why ask now when everything is new and buggy? Would it hurt you to wait?

*sigh* ... remembers good old days

.... 2 YEARS of testing/preparation ... and still in "newborn-phase" !!

Well - sorry but no wonder PE/EU has (and has had for long time) a bad rep. among MMORPG sites. Not only will this "lack" probably keep off a lot of new "customers" ..but also in the end lose a lot of the old ones.
There are other "games" who work perfectly well (and even with less "requirements") more ppl. able to play. And if ppl. miss/want the "gambling" part .. they can join a ton of casino´s online. PROBLEM SOLVED.
NO .. because many ppl. (like myself) have put money and AGES of time in this our alternate LIFE. ... just to see it turn more and more into "barbie-style" ... gameplay and reward getting worse for each update.

To me we could still be playing in VGA style ... if only the game-concept was good enough. The concept of "working" your way up in similar IRL style has gone - long gone. One part I really enjoyed when I landed in old PE more than 4 years ago. Today its either "get lucky hit BIG ATH" ... or deposit XXXXX PED ..and start earning. ... Loot is for most tt-stuffed oil hides etc. - mining often low % stuff .. and lotsa NRF (dead claims) etc. - not to mention crafting where u need to go to lvl 3-4 stuff to just get something u can sell (i.e. jesters - early mining gear) is simply just for skilling/hoffing .. or getting residue.
*sigh* .... really really miss old times PE

You're enthusiasm is always contagious just like ND's. :wtg:

It really is to bad though that you're having to deal with such a terrible release at this time. I could write a volume on marketing, community building and all that has went wrong with this release, and not just the obvious huge bugs.

Since you're 'marketing'..... don't you think that the mentor system and sweating... things that give an incentive for older players to help new players and things for new players to do should have been a part of 10.0 and not later on? It greatly bothers me to think of how many new players are trying it now and leaving for lack of help or things to do and of the old players that came back to check it out but leave because they see the same ol' shoot and loot game with no real changes other than eye candy.

I've never understood MA's mindset on their releases and when / what they do. It certainly seems like there's a huge gap in forethought of cause & effect.

I've had a few discussions with MS9 about community building. I've always been good at it and will help her anyway I can. It is very difficult given the current parameters of the game. You know my vision of what this could be and should be.

I hope you're able to have great success with your current project although I really do wish you weren't having to deal with the problems of the VU on top of it all and could just concentrate on what you do best. For that, I fault MA.

Casay

Honestly I think MA should stop any and all marketing initiatives at the moment. If a new player were to download this game and start playing today I can't imagine they would last more than 5 minutes, and they would mostly likely be lost as a customer forever. Even most of us diehards who have been playing for years can't stand to play right now, I can't imagine what a total noob would do.

I've been playing for around two years (off and on). I have to say my biggest disappointment with the new game is that it is a NEW game. I would primarily go on mining runs and now everything has changed. I can't recognize any place. Do I want to invest the time in learning a new less-fun (I say this because the character can't even run without tripping on rocks or climbing hills) game?

I think the disappointment with this game is not because I like wining about things (I had no complaints with previous updates) - but the game is genuinely changed for the worse. It's like someone is intentionally driving the train off the rails. I'm not even that upset, I had fun playing the game. My total assets are only around $100 (more than I've spent on any other game so congrats on that MA).

I also entered the "create a critter" competition and now I'm not even sure it happened. Maybe I only dreamed there was a contest and I spent time entering it. I have to say that the handling of this contest has made me feel like, "what was the point?"

Funny.

You people communicate with us when you need us.

But you hardly communicate with us when we need you.

I will do as you say.

Hope communication improves from now on.

does it help to improve the game or to fill mindarks pockets?
no vote from me

actualy there are other problems to solve first, imo

yep, I edited it, I agree with the others bad timing.

are you guys serious??

MA (sorry fpc) just released a new 'universe' on a rather new engine (not designet for this at ALL) which EVERYONE have been cry-ing (hehe just had to play with some words) to try, the past 2 (ish) years. and when you get it.. damn spoiled brats!

ofc. As every other VU. its hated, loved, but its good for you (even though loot sucks), just to have it clear; its impossible to tests it with more than a few % of the current computer setups out there, (If you dont agree, buy a playstation) and testing with a serverload of 101% as Everyone wants to try it at once, .. its just not possible... and im going a bit oftopic now. but ITS SUPPOSED to be buggy, that way its much easier and faster to fix/find problems, than making (dont take this 100% serious) making 1k of 'if'- statements in the code, 'if he got this computer then -- else if do this --- and so on"

But ... going against Bates, MA, FPC or whoever just cause the VU is a bit shitty atm?, its not even 100% released yet, as we're waiting for 10.1 and 10.2. if you have faith in MA (or fpc.. its like converting from PE to EU) you tell them whats wrong, so they can fix it.. (they actually make money buy doing this) And you wait until its fixed, as you know they will, and give them a hug and compliments

You know, if 99% of the system works, they still bitch about the %1.

you should be ashamed!

Hi John,

checking "what's this at all about" I read here:
John K Bates said:
MindArk manage to control inflation, maintain value, and build a fun game all at once. How?

Sorry John, this is reality distortion at it's finest. In fact MindArc managed to:
  • create a hyper inflation on a few Uber items (Uber armors, Mod/ Adj/ Imp gear)
  • kill lots of previous value of a lot of once expensive items (middle class "classical" unlimited gear, and some clothing) *1
  • drastically and ongoing reducing the fun in their game, replacing it by steadily increasing gambling.
Add to it that you've hit the most wrong time to both doing any marketing for EU, as well as for asking the community for help.

MA has managed to create huge hurdles for both newcomers as well as established participants, choosing the well known most resource hungry game engine available on the market, and to add to it, implemented it in a way that even dwarfs Crysis, the reference design - EU might be one of the most resource hungry games at all today ...
And it's ridden with bugs and annoyances beyond believe.

If I'd be allowed to offer an advice:
  • Immediately stop all & any activities that might cause EU to be mentioned in the media, for now. All & any - whoever would become curious, and would come to check out today, would be lost forever.
  • Read a little here, maybe try for yourself - educate yourself about the situation.
  • Then go on strike - tell your chieftains that any active marketing at the moment would heavily backfire. Tell 'em that huge parts of the community are very upset, and that the house is on fire. *2
You'd inevitably fail at the moment with any tries doing your job. To put you into a situation where you are able to do your job in a satisfying way, some other people have to repair first what they messed up!

You might not believe me. I know. So I say: try for yourself. Get yourself a fresh computer for about $500 that is labeled "ready for gaming". Install EU, make a new ordinary account, and try your luck. Talk to the people anonymously. Play what a "try-out" would play. Then try $100/ month deposits, pretending what you've seen would have pleased you ... Very soon you'll understand what I'm saying.

Kind regards, and have fun!

*1: To illustrate have a look at the long time markup graphs of two exemplary items, "Katsuichi Honor" and "EMT Kit Ek-2600". Maybe check what happened with certain paint cans a while ago. Even "small people" like me have lost thousands of PED's only due to MA's failed "maintaining value" ...

*2: You might become an epic hero among the community doing such. As you'd easily see reading this forum we participants, or at least a lot of us, feel ignored, and mucked around. Even if we have a huge desire, and interest, for this game (that we love - we're still here after all of this!) to finally improve, and to finally reach a state the great idea it displays would deserve, and to finally reap the success it could have, we, or at least a lot of us, have lost confidence.
We'd really rejoice good marketing, success of this game, bazillions of newcomers, and happiness all over the place, but the current situation is far from offering any opportunity for such.
So our hopes seem to be related to your job?

PS: +Rep as a sign of credit of trust :))

I am probably one of the most virulent "haters" about this VU.
I am still convinved that MA/FPC does not provide us with the level of service we all deserve.

But ...

I will vote

I will vote because EU deserves it.
I will vote because EU needs it.
I will vote because i have faith in a brand future.

I will vote because i love this "game".

Xandra, I could not have said it better. ;)

No offence, but Mindark's PR department should go on vacation,
untill they got an proper working product to sell.

Again, take it step by step, do not rush it. :)

There is a lot of bullshit written on this forum lately which is why I spend so much less time here but this one makes me smile..

This is a cool post and I'll put my name under it.. :wtg:
