Hey Everyone, this is currently a work in progress, but I will be working on creating the ultimate beacon guide.
Section 1 - Introduction
A little bit about why I'm writing this guide. First of all, the reintroduced beacons have been back a while now, and the majority of players still haven't tried them out yet. Beacons are a ton of fun and if you haven't done one yet, you're missing out on part of the game. HOWEVER, without an experienced team member, the majority of players are COMPLETELY unprepared to run a beacon. This leads to players going into beacons that are way above their heads and getting their opalos shoved up their wahoos by robots way too strong for them. Then if they do manage to get to the end boss and kill him, they're unprepared for looting all of the boxes (if any).
Why am I qualified to write this guide? Well to start off, I've run over 500 beacons since they've returned to the game, probably as many or more than all other beacons have been run in the time they've been back in game. I've run every size of beacon multiple times (successfully) and have led many teams of beacon newbies through throngs of evil robots.
By the end of this guide, not only will you know what a beacon is and how to run one, you will know exactly what you will be facing and whether you and your team of crusaders are enough to make it to the prize at the end of the robotic rainbow.
Section 2 - The basics
Section 2.1 - What is a beacon mission?
A robot beacon is a form of teamed instance mission in which you and your team (and nobody else) attempt to kill a bunch of robots within an alotted time limit in order to open the storage containers. Along the way, there are dozens of robots and traps that you have to destroy, a mini boss, and then a final boss that opens the storage containers once killed.
Section 2.2 - How do I start a beacon mission?
First of all, you need to aquire a robot beacon in order to 'enter' the instance. They are generally found in OOTO (out of the ordinary) finds while mining, generally near robot spawns, but the easiest way to find them is on the auction. There are currently 7 different kinds of robot beacons:
23 PED: Robot Beacon (001010010110001)
25 PED: Robot Beacon (100101110100100101)
29 PED: Robot Beacon (1100001000010111011011)
35 Easy: Robot Beacon (1110101010100000001001)
35 Hard: Robot Beacon (111100000000000000001001)
39 PED: Robot Beacon (1111100010101101011011)
42 PED: Robot Beacon (111111001101101110001111)
23 PED beacons are the easiest and they get harder up until you reach the 42 PED beacon.
Once you've acquired a beacon, you need a team of at least 2 people (yourself and another), the beacon on hand and at least enough guns and ammo to last you the whole mission. You can exit the beacon to get more gear, but since it is timed, this is not recommended.
Each beacon level has a different location that you enter at, each of them a downed robot dropship, and you can get the location by equipping the beacon and using it. It will conveniently put a waypoint on your map that you can send off to your team mates. Once you've arrived, you need to gather at least 2 people near the entry point and the team leader (who has to have the beacon in inventory) needs to operate the signature analyzer, which is the button at the front of the downed dropship. It will then allow the whole team to enter through the same button for the duration of the whole mission. You will then be transported to a sector of the planet Akbal, the robot homeworld.
Section 2.3 - What to expect on a beacon mission
Each beacon mission consists of a series of rooms with robots, destructable traps and storage containers. To continue to the next room, you must destroy the majority of the robots in the current room and then activate the door terminal to unlock the door to the next room. Keep an eye out for the locations of the storage containers in each room, as there are 21 of them randomly scattered throughout the whole mission. The storage containers will initially be locked and unlootable, but the instant you kill the boss at the end, they are all opened and you have 6 minutes to loot them all, so have a plan ready so you don't miss any.
Section 3 - The Environment
On each beacon mission there are a bunch of interactive objects that you may encounter, ranging from glass walls to explosive barrels. Some are destructable, while others are permanent. It is important to know what you may be running into, as some of them can be quite deadly.
Section 3.1 - Laser Emitter
The laser emitter is a trap in which there are two posts with a laser fence between them. Walking through the fence will damage you for 75% of your current health, so it is recommended to shoot out one of the fence posts, which will destroy the trap. Generally the posts have only 20 hp, so they're quick and easy to take care of.
Section 3.2 - Glass
This section is pretty self explanatory. Glass will stop you and the robots from reaching each other, shooting it will break it.
Section 3.3 - Proximity Mine
Proximity mines are traps that are activated by getting too close to them. They can usually be found floating in the air and look like giant spikey balls. Upon activation you have a few seconds before they explode and deal damage to all that are nearby. The damage is based on the distance you are from the mine, closer meaning more damage. They can be shot at and blown up, but beware if anyone is standing nearby as they will take damage when it is destroyed. They usually have only 30 hp, so they're cheap to destroy and worth taking out in most situations.
Section 3.4 - Electric Mine
Electric mines are similar to proximity mines, except they're smaller and deal less damage. They can also deal damage to other nearby traps, such as laser emitters and are an easy way to clear a safe path. They usually have only 10 hp so they are very easy to blow up with a weak weapon.
