Shops were a nice idea, but imo shops were doomed to fail from the start.
Why search endlessly in the hundreds of shops when you have an easy listed auction?
Only a few shops managed to make some turnover. But most are more like decorated abandoned rooms.
The only way to make shops viable would be to end the auction so people are forced to shop. But I guess most players don't want to go shopping. They just want to buy and sell quickly.
Remove the auction from the game and you will see all the shops in use.
I don't think so. What you will see is a wave of anger instead. The auction house gives those who cannot afford a shop a way to sell at all. Want to take it away and force everybody back to the stone age just to drive traffic to your shop? It's not going to be liked. But what I find inexplicable indeed is that there hasn't been a discovery option for shop items from the start. It would be so easy.
It could even be integrated with the auction interface so that you have a way of easy search and direct price comparison. Only instead of the bidding interface, you would get a waypoint. Right now you can check auction prices of items in a shop, but not the other way around which is unfair.
