Hoping to hear from some with decent experience in this. Assuming you run amped all the time with a certain amp (level 5 or D class), my question - is it worth it to do this?

The MU on these is fairly reasonable. I have considered crafting my own, but I hesitate because perhaps it’s better to just pay the MU and not subject to MA crafting swings.

I have decent crafting skills, but i don’t enjoy it and don’t really trust it. Amp BPs also seem pretty volatile.

Is this worth it? Do you suggest condition or quantity? Or.. leave this to the specialists.

There's no way you can craft those amps cheaper than buying them, forget about it.

If you are thinking of crafting few amps for your own use, yeah, like slither said, just buy them from a crafter, you can't make the math work unless you have huge volume.

On the other hand, if you can get your hands on a Boosted BP with a decent number of clicks for a reasonable price, then it could work, but still a big gamble...

Unless you buy something from someone else, all activities in EU are a gamble, you never know at the end how much something will end up costing you

As a miner it is best to allow the crafters to craft , to keep the economy moving.

If they have a market through you , you will be able to sell your loot more effectively.

Our friend Auktuma reminds us this.

If your going to craft your own amps, you need to make a ton of them to be worth it.
Generally low number of clicks is too volatile, you could get a ton of fails/near success, or you could get a ton of success in a row. But when you get the fails/near, it can put you at a loss.

Now if you had a sizable bankroll for crafting and a separate bankroll for mining, then its possible, but you would need to look at say 500 clicks on a d class to get to a breakeven point.
The kicker though is that breakeven point is still a loss in tt value, so you will still be paying MU for the amps, but to yourself. Unless of course you get a lucky run an end up in profit over that run.

Those boosted BP's could give you an advantage, but they also cost quite a bit as people sell them for pretty much the amount you would make using them. Except you are more likely to global/hof on them.

I would say, just keep to buying the amps from crafters, and if you find a specific crafter who you can buy amps from, maybe they in turn will buy your mined mats.

Over years my impression has formed that it's better to buy what you need (assuming reasonable mu), instead of crafting it yourself, as long as item in question is of abundance.

There are plenty of folks who already gamble on amp crafting and will sell under their costs to just recoup some mu to continue gambling. Given that I don't see how you can be better off crafting your own.

I generally craft my own amps nowadays, but I'll agree with the others that it's generally better for >95% of miners to buy their amps, especially since shop user shops have them cheaper than auction. PA Mall, Medusa, and Twin Peaks Mall all have amps under auction MU depending on what you need.

That said, if you are going to mine with your own crafted amps, level 5 or d-class are really the starting point you should consider it (a case could maybe be made for a level 3 MU-wise, though I'd just say buy level 5s at that point). You should be able to pencil out the rough predicted MU of crafting an amp and relatively compare to others to see which ones have the lowest MU costs. Those should be with high QR bps though (ideally 90+), and for say a level 5, that should at least be running you around 1k ped.

The trouble is needing sufficient bankroll to craft a large number of amps at once so you don't get caught in low sample size variability. Part of that is just having the main crafting materials, but the challenge is having enough residue on hand at a sufficient price. Back when residue was 101%, I could make a case for crafting amps being a better deal, but lately, it's been closer to breakeven for me with shop prices unless I can bid on really large lots that have lower MU.

I started crafting level 5's with a QR 90+ bp in the last year, and my current cost per amp including globals and HoFs is 199.25 per amp over about 500 clicks. If I don't include those multipliers though, then I'm around 204 ped in cost/amp. That's with high QR and very low residue costs, reusing residue from my amp crafting, and generally paying decent auction rates for the other ingredients since I don't want to confound my mining accounting. I still feel like I got really lucky though, so I'm not considering 500 clicks a large enough sample size to be comfortable with my numbers. That cost/amp is creeping up now that I've eaten up my <101% residue I stored up though.

I also have been working on a D-class bp that's around 20 QR now, and I can definitely tell that low QR is eating up the PED. Part of it is starting with higher residue costs from the start, but I'm mostly fighting to keep my cost/amp even with what I can sell for on the auction while I "train" on the BP for more QR. I'm better off buying D-class amps for mining still though unless I get a good global or HOF to push the cost down below 103.75% (the cheapest D-class amps I've found for sale).

So it is possible to get ahead crafting your own amps, but the market on residue is so tight, and you don't really stand a chance in the near-term with a low QR bp. I'd say it's easier to end up costing yourself more crafting than the auction/shop cost even if you're being semi-careful than coming ahead even with my success on level 5's so far.

I have a bankroll, but I think I'm leaning towards just continuing to purchase them. If anything, I think it would be annoying to have a good mining run, then a terrible crafting run. Maybe it would be nice vice-versa but... yeah, I think given all the input here I'll just purchase them.

I appreciate it

This is just for me at least, but a bad crafting run means I’ll just sell on auction and recoup most of my losses (or maybe gain a little). I have a set threshold for amp MU where I consider it worthwhile to mine (somewhat area dependent too). That won’t work for everyone, but at least for my play style, it means less ped tied up in the game than plunking down for an UL level 5+ amp even if it’s more work. I keep a pretty tight rein on my accounting though to track that, so that’s part of why I say going this route may not work for 95% of miners, but it can have potential if you’re willing to put time and wisdom into it.

Yeah, that also makes sense. I appreciate the insight, you've always got great feedback when it comes to mining. Actually, tracking things in mining is part of the fun to me (I know I'm a nerd). It's amazing what patterns jump out both in and out of your control, with a good spreadsheet.
