Why?

because it's quite interesting to play in a competitive environment, against people from all over the world, when everything has a real cash value.

it's far away from perfect, in my humble opinion mostly because youknowwho, but that doesn't change the fact that it's still an interesting thing.

sure, i have to admit that the "invest into your avatar's future" concept became a bit worn out over the years, and as stakeholder you maybe got fscked from behind on one occasion or two, but still interesting, if you ask me.

and finally, the best thing in EU, which is free of any charge ... it's surely the community!

because your money cycled here lasts just a tad longer than playing real world casino or lottery... not much, just a little.
 
Now where to go from that?

it's the same as when we started. find your niche, or focus on the things that are enough fun for the costs involved. work on your setup, maybe try new things, or leave your fingers off those that aren't fun or a big loss.

if you don't play EU like you'd play in a casino, but rather play it like you'd visit an amusement park, then i guess you don't have to ask why anymore. never visited one and didn't take a single ride, just been there with friends?

fun is dynamic, just saying. and let's be happy that EU isn't our job! :laugh:

Lets hear your opinions that you would use to convince a new player to join or a veteran player to stay.

I hate to spend my online time on useless games.

It has to be for real!
The same that I always play poker for money, albeit low stakes, but there just have to be stakes.
It makes the game serious, knowing it's about real money here!

And there Entropia is unique!
 
Fascinating question!

I remember why I joined (in 2002 as a 13 year old). As a young gamer, I had an idea of what the perfect game would look like: Real life, but you could do anything!

I started playing online games pretty early and have good memories associated with them. However, I always felt limited by their boundaries and dreamed of bigger, boundless worlds.

Runescape was my game of choice for a year or two because it offered some of the freedom I wished for. I liked the idea of being able to choose what you wanted to do and being able to specialise in certain areas (I enjoyed making food). Entropia continued in this direction and promised much of the same, just in a more "realistic" environment (Runescape was of course 2D ish back then).

The sense of adventure, liberty and choices sold Entropia to me. 18 years later, however, open worlds are commonplace, so this is much less of a selling point for people. The attraction becomes innovation within these open worlds. Here I think Entropia has both a lot of inspiration sources in other open words, and a gleaming opportunity to implement creative content where the revenue possibilities are limitless.

Since 2002, I've not focused on any other game than Entropia, where I've invested all my gaming time. I've remained loyal and dedicated to the Universe, made and lost friends, moved to Norway to live with my girlfriend who I met in Entropia and got 2 daughters with her. Quite literally, Entropia has shaped my life.

My motivations have changed throughout the years. In the early days, it was all about exploring and learning. As soon as I discovered the Oil Rig, I was hooked on the challenge and lived there for a while, until Sweat Gathering was introduced and I decided to focus on that. I've always been motivated by making money for time spent working on it. This is still what drives me in Entropia, only on a much larger scale nowadays as a Mod FAP healer. It's a super long-term process and my goals have grown along with me, so I can't really see an endgame for myself. Just gonna keep on keeping on and see where I end up :)

Previously I've had a lot of focus on helping new players, but recently I've focused on internal goals and been a bit of a recluse ingame. Now I'm on the way out of this tunnel-vision lifestyle after reaching my healing life-goal: The Mod FAP. Helping newbies and making fun events for them is one of my passions and one I hope to return to shortly. I think we need a lot more focus on the newcomers and to make things engaging for them, with more interesting gameplay opportunities. Not sure what would motivate people to join Entropia these days. Maybe time to do a survey?

Veteran players often get stuck in ruts where they cannot see an exit. Often it's a single change in the Universe that sends them packing, saying they'll never be back (Luke's Law: No One Ever Leaves Entropia). I feel like there are more positive changes happening recently and that we've been waiting for some of them for years. We're still waiting for some to happen, but we're on a positive path now. Often when people quit, the change that made them quit gets edited later so it would've fit them (ergo: no need to ragequit).

For both new players and veterans alike, PATIENCE is of utmost importance in Entropia. Here we need to think in YEARS, not months, weeks or days. We all need to find the balance between available time and available money to invest:


- If you have time, you can earn a higher % of your ingame spendings in Entropia. This will involve using your time on free activities that can earn you money over time.

- If you have money but not much time, depositing is your key.

Playing within your means is an art that needs to be mastered. Being satisfied with less is an important lesson to learn as well as having an attitude of gratitude rather than entitlement. The system owes you NOTHING, no matter how much you put into it. Many people forget this.

open worlds are commonplace, but persitent worlds are not. there's only 2 games i know of in developement that take this major point into consideration. Entropia Universe originally WAS designed with this in concept. It's the reason different servers serve different areas. it's not an easy problem to solve because of network limitations.

star citizen has got some kind of rolling instancing going on within it's persistent universe to deal with intense localized combat where dual universe has a single shard concept. again everyone is faced with server limits and bandwidth restrictions. everyone else seems concerned with it.

to solve this is to solve the lag. and we all really like lag right?

this is the issue that must be solved in order to retain me and my money. and yes i'm getting married to that saudi princess in 1yr and 2 weeks!

A little dated but still true:

Having dinner today with a friend who I haven't seen much of lately. We spent some time catching up and talking about work and family. The issue of gaming came up.

He said that is is very bored with his current game, let's call it Devil2. I told him a bit about EU and told him I'd help him get started if he wanted to play.

He asked me, 'Are there a lot of cool items in the game?'

I talked a little about the economy of the game and uber items and such but I tried to keep it real. I told him that most people exist with mid-level gear and it is very rare to get a 'cool' item in a loot.

'What about rings and bracelets and jewels and stuff?'

I explained about the jewels that are in the game and how they aren't really what he is thinking of. No rings and jewelry. No items that give any buffs or items that can be applied to existing items (upgrades.)

'What about really cool armor?'

'How often do boss monsters drop uber items?'

etc...

I spent a good deal of time talking about how EU is different. I explained how there are no level caps - no class limitations - how the challenge to be economical and still have fun it part of the game for many players.

He said, 'Listen dude, I'm not playing a game where all the monsters drop crap. I want to get awesome stuff. I want to say, 'Wow! this is a freakin awesome sword.''

Fair enough. EU isn't for everyone.

But the conversation got me thinking and I called my nephew. He and I used to play EU together 3+ years ago. Back when Longus were slow and two noobs working together could take one down with a couple of Jester D1s.

He is now playing a popular MMO. Let's call it AlwaysQuest2. I asked him what is favorite thing to do in the game was. (I knew the answer)

'I like to look in the broker (auction.) I like to look at all the jewelry and stuff and figure out what would be best against different bosses.'

I knew this answer was coming. I have played this game with him and we often talked about the wide variety of different items in the game.

'Any interest in playing EU again?'

He asked me about the looting now. I told him that usually it is stuff for crafting like oils and hides and such. He then told me something right along the lines of what my friend said. My nephew said, 'I like when I kill a monster and he drops something cool and useful. It's a double bonus if it is something that my character can personallly use.'

Now I know that EU has thousands of different items. And I also know that EU is not for everyone. But there seems to be a class of 'gamer' that likes to see cool and useful items in their loot.

I can imagine that many people download and install EU and spend time learning the game only to get hides and oils in their loots. They might think about to their previous game where the loot contained jewelry and more items that were useful in some fashion.

To make a long post short, my friend won't play EU because there really isn't a lot of cool stuff in the loots. I wonder how many others think the same thing.

Huh? There's plenty of persistent world games out there, and not just among MMOs and MUDs (MUDs being the biggest example though).
