Here's a couple of ideas for some interesting weapons...
Why not let there be boomerangs in game? With Next Island and it's primitive past, this sort of aboriginal/primative weapon would be a nice addition to the game. It could work similar to the boomerang in the old Zelda games... where it has a long range and damages anything in the path it takes and it returns back to the avatar that threw it. When it is moving, the avatar cannot use any other weapons or tools until the boomerang returns. The boomerang would use something similar to the old follow avatar command to take a path that catches up to the avatar that threw it - so after you throw it you can run around and not have to stand in one place while you wait for the boomerang to return to you (similar to Zelda). It should be a fairly low damage weapon that is repairable. The boomerang should not decay super fast since it will be such a low damage weapon. It would be the equivalent damage to the tt handgun more or less. The advantage of the boomerang, like the boomerang in zelda, is that it would not use ammo, and it would return to you no matter which direction you move, so it could be very useful if you run around in circles a lot around a single mob, or mob group so that you can keep constantly moving without taking a ton of armor decay - a sort of ultimate way to skill up on evade - kind of like the defensive/offensive alternate to the whip I guess.... It would take a lot of boomerang shots to kill anything since it'd be such a low amount of damage per hit, and would be so slow to return to your hands. However, for stuff like a group angry snables, bercycled, etc. it might be useful since you could hit several mobs at once and just keep running around til they are all dead. Throw boomerang, run, let it do damage, catch it, repeat... hopefully you won't run too close to a turret.
Another idea would be a spear that can be thrown at mobs, and bow and arrows. Spears could be used as either stab weapons or thrown weapons. If the spear is thrown, you need to go and retrieve it from the mob it was thrown at - so you might risk getting the spear stolen if you throw it too much as other avatars could pick it up, and maybe some smart mob ai would let the mob pick it up and throw it at you too.... Advantage of throwing it is that throwing it will cause more damage than normally available if you use it as a stab weapon. If riding pets is ever introduced, spears could be used as stab weapons from on top of the ridden creatures, sort of like old style knights. Spears would have a range that's about double or triple the length of the longest longblade in game. That way they are not super long range, but still long enough range that they could be used from a vehicle or mob being used as a vehicle.
Another primitive weapon idea would be sling shots... and yes, they would use stones as ammo!
If vehicles are ever introduced, we could also throw a bunch of various attachments on to them that might be fun... maybe a gun turret... maybe a battering ram that goes on the front. Perhaps an energy shield around it... and for really advanced options, lets throw some inflatable tubes on there to cross water, and helicoptor option to fly. Imagine sitting in your helicoptor car sitting next to the mountains around Twin peak, shooting at a bunch of mobs that could not hit you since you are out of their reach - that sort of thing would only work for a week or so though since someone would inevitably say that it's abusing the system and MA would make all mobs killed in that way non-lootable, thereby decreasing market value of all flying vehicles substantially the next days after that...
