I do not know if this has already been mentioned or not but idea is simple.

At the moment Space battles are expensive as hell and kinda pointless. The idea is to make something similar to what we already have on the planet - fort event. The most important thing would be that we could get space event system and in events the costs would be significantly reduced (same as fort events).

The Structure

Example: 2 teams, 2 Captains (2 Mothership owners) create an event and people can register to either of teams. The thing is - there are quite a few MS out there that are active, have their regular or maybe semi-regular crew, but no one will really battle each other because it's too damn expensive. It's too much of a ped drain to battle with 30k SI and repairing is ultra cheap.

Could also add new features specially for the event.
For example during an event you can board a mothership w/o being on the guest list - possibility of fighting inside as well.
Add objectives - assassinate the captain (deed holder), steal documents/data disk (just reach a certain spot to collect something and leave the ship without being killed) etc.

In the future they could make some of the space stations more usable - like a defensible structures with turrets and interior repair points, targets for the enemy to destroy. So there would an assault event - 1 or more ships attacking to destroy the station, destroy some inside targets, steal something, kill someone etc.

The possibilities are endless, you just have to think. MA added motherships, so some extra usage for them and more activity in space would be great. This is just a quick brainstorm, I really hope MA is planning to add extra content to space soon.

Great idea - kinda shows how few ppl are in space that you get no reply for a day, and then it slips way down the 'new posts' too!

The 'slight' problems:
MA seem to want lootable pvp for all but the tightest circle around the stations! However, if the creation of an event had 'turn lootable off' option, MA would quickly get an idea of who prefers what.
[edit: ppl will probably leave stacks at home anyway, as they know they will fight, but there could be a designation of part of the registration fee towards pvp-looting, or the ability to turn it off. MA could thus see in a lootable pvp environment what settings the organisers and participants prefer. It might not change MA strategy, but would help identify the customers' interests in a closed environment!!!]

The above idea would have to mean getting to the event without lootable PVP too, otherwise you are not going to get non-lootable supporters going in the first place, depending on how it is done! (Yes, MA, do it with a minimum of fuss, like direct station TP to a 'space dome' that really is SPACE ;) )

The fort events on Caly are pretty much dead for a variety of reasons. They don't even set up a free or 1-ped weekly one so that interest can be generated and the idea marketed for ppl to create their own events! If Douglas Adams were alive today, he'd write entries not about the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation's marketing division, but about MA's.

I love your idea of 'mission objectives' too - could repeat the same task, or rotate through them when one side succeeds etc. There is SO much room for fun (in theory). Being blasphemous... I'm sure the community could even create sandboxes for it if they just knew what had to be considered and set for an event.

Starting with absolutely MINIMAL programming by MA (it's in space so it's their stuff, not pp so far):

1: designate an area for it, i.e. the borders (sphere or box) and entry to it via station tp

2: reduce costs etc to just 10% tied in with event creation module

3: put in some options for players to choose the level of balance, i.e no armour = set MS SI or so, but not the original starter value, maybe can be selected!

4: Allow some kind of objective selection, like kill the captain etc. I realise things like activating pvp on board, and how attackers should get on (hangar-only, or via 'operate' command when close to ship as with privateers) requires a bit of thought, but I work with programmers and know that if software already has stuff implemented it can be pretty easy and quick to use various features with small setup changes!)

5: make a few events available for free or minimal fee!

Compared to other stuff being developed (which requires strategic thinking on the consequences of the way the universe develops), this idea could be imlemented with very little strategic thought. Please do it! :)

Yes, the problem with fort events is that you need a lot of players. With motherships it could be a bit better - there are already quite a few out there that has regular or semi-regular crew, invite some soc mates, other friends, make it a public event and you will have decent amount of people.

Yep, some good ideas. MA has to see that motherships aren't going to battle for fun when it takes thousands of peds to shoot one down.
