As a couple of people in the EU know, I started playing EU in May of 2006. The reason I started playing the EU was as a part of a "review" project and the goal was to play for one year, depositing what was considered a reasonable amount and see where I would be at the end of a 1 year period of time.

In addition to the determination of returns overall, I'm also expected to provide additional information regarding the community, the company (MA) and overall gameplay and such.

The problem I have is that I've made a lot of friends over the past year and I've also grown very fond of the EU itself. Unfortunately, duty requires that I will soon have to liquidate my account, selling all my gear and all my skills. Once that is done, I will probably just "start fresh" with a new avatar, or simply rebuild the one I have now.

Anyway... that's just a wee bit of what is going on in order to give you an idea of what I am actually asking.

I need to rate the overall experience within the EU for my project. I know what I think as an overal rating of the "EU Experience", but I thought I might also add to my report what the community thinks of their experiences inside the EU.

So, here's what I want to know.

Thinking about your experiences within the EU, including support and overall customer service from MA, how would you rate the EU on a scale of 1 through 10? 1 would mean that the EU sucks and needs to be scrapped; 10 would mean that the EU is the best thing ever and couldn't hope to improve.

This will be a private poll, so feel free to vote honestly. However, if you would like to provide some honest feedback regarding how you voted and why, I would be interested in hearing it.

Thanks

I voted (9) always room for improvement;)
I started in late Febuary/Early March 2006 and have been completey Addicted since... I don't care who knows it!!!:silly2:

The EU/EF community is fabulous!! I have met some very exceptional people with in this virtual universe, I wouldn't trade them for the most Uber equiptment:D

I have sent a few support cases due to issues with my login but they were quick to respond with a helpful informative answer..

I am pretty content with the latest and greatest update... like with any change there is a period of adjustment...

My reason for logging in Every Day, simply the Fun factor!!! My soc mates ROCK!! we have the best time together, hunting and goofing on each other:D
I enjoy and take great pride in helping others ingame, this allows me to feel like I'm helping to give back to the EU community... The fact that Everyday IS different... Never Ending This Virtual World is what you make of it:)

Best Wishes

Can't really rate it with a number...

...but I voted a 7.
Some things are just great. Really great. Other things frustrate me to no end. But the good outweighs the bad, by a pretty good stretch.

In a lot of ways, EU is still a real adventure I guess, and the fact that there are RL people behind all the other avi's is a large part of that. Then there's the gameplay, the scenery, the chance (however small) of scoring big, the improvement in stature of your avi.
All good.

Bad: MA nerfing me (and all of my generation) every step of the way. Their support people arouse my worst homicidal feelings.
And the user interface is impossible to really get used to.

So a 7 it is.

I've opted for (4).

I think the concept is fantastic, and that is what I love more than anything. Unfortunately, I feel that the execution of the concept is sorely lacking.

Much is made of the "real cash economy", but to (mis)quote from Jerry McGuire "you had me after real cash". The economy of EU is, to say the least, very unusual, and does not reflect any sane economic model. (..and I would like to insert a prophylactic global negrep to all who respond 'supply and demand' ;) )

Many of the gameplay elements are quite primitive, and could do with major improvements. Melee combat animations, for example, are particularly one-dimensional.

Many people cite the community as one of the good points. In my experience, the community is no better than any in the other MMO environments I have visited. The real cash aspect unfortunately generates behaviour that often makes the community experience fairly harsh, and sometimes truly unpleasant.

I have met many wonderful friends in EU, and it IS a virtual universe. I believe it could become a great virtual universe if some crucial flaws are overcome.

There are plenty of tools out there that can be used to estimate the value of you avatars skills and equipment. Can you not use these to determine the value of your avatar without actually needing to cash out and start over? I would think that it could even add to your report if your personal view of the experiment is that you feel so strongly about it that you don't wish to lose what you have gained?

two words: contractual agreement

i voted 4 :scared:

...because its bad for me and it is addictive. EU has caused me alot of frustration (still does), and i dont understand MAs vision, how they treat their playerbase and how equiped they are for the job. of course we cant compare them to anyone since this universe is one-of-a-kind. i spend way too much money here, but then again its my own choice (read: addicted). all the nerfs, all the inflations and the way they handle scammers, thieves and cheaters makes me abit upset.

then again... i absolutely love this universe and i will never sell out! i had more good moments in this universe than i could ever even imagine. i met alot of good people, and i even found the love of my life here (thanks MA :D).

im off work now so im gonna keep this short. i could say just as much good as i could say bad about MA and EU. im a guy who usualy try focus on the good things rather than the bad, so i guess thats why im still here :)

i was probably abit harsh when i voted 4  on second thought i should probably have voted 5 (good vs bad) or even 6 because i try put the weight on the good things hehe.

love to hate and hate to love. thats how i would describe EU in one sentance.

sorry MA, but my intentions are good :) i only want you guys to become better (hope i didnt break any rules with thisone)

I just gotta ask, contractual agreement with whom? Reviewed for whom, and for what purpose? Really curious. With an answer to this, I probably would respond.

I rated EU as a 7.

My reasons:

The concept gets a 10.. it's simply the best as far as MMORPGS go. others are more specialist to a certain theme whereas i find EU just right... without being lord of the rings or stars wars or D&D.. etc etc etc

Gameplay i'd give an 7.. overall its good but there are alot of improvements that could be made. i dont know how exactly you'd do them but simple things like trying to eliminate the terrible lag at times and rubber banding.. walking into invisible walls that just pop up and you spend 100 ammo shooting mobs that CAN'T be killed because of bugs or whatever ... there are many more things but that was just an example....

The community: i'd give a 9..... like it was previously said communities are pretty much the same on all MMORPGS etc but this doesnt get a 10 because of the "REAL CASH ECONOMY" because of this there are alot of scammers and people who arnt online for any good reason.. because of this it's a 9. But it would NEVER get a 10 in my eyes because alot of people are just here for the money and will do anything to get it.... Other online games arnt driven by REAL money and because of that they tend to have happier communities and more people willing to help..

Then there is the financial side: I've kept this away from gamaplay because I think it's a seporate entity in itself because of the RCE .

I give this a 6: It's NOT a real cash economy... YES you can deposit .. and YES EVENTUALLY you can get something back IF you are lucky and IF you wait 3 months to get it...... I dont care what you say this is not real life... Instant cash in and instant cash out thats the way it should be. The auctions i find are good and easy to use and the player trading is good too but it is driven NOT by a market but by PLAYER POWER..... Real life RICH people who play this game get richer by buying all the UBER items and selling for profits because you cant get them unless you pay what they want....
It's not real life.... Dont get me worng i'm not ranting about rich peole.... well played to you all and what you've done and to be honist I would do the same if I were rich it is just common sence.. but it makes the RCE in the GAME seriously flawed as it is controled not by the game or the economy but by the players.. and because of this it is wrong.... and seriously flawed...

OVERALL it's a 7.

Many good things about it and I still love playing on but there are many ways it could be improved to make it the untimate MMORPG...

;)

Unfortunately I am not able to discuss who the project is for. However, I can tell you that there is a good chance the report will become published.

(assuming of course they like my report)

Did these contractors fund your avatar? From the sounds of it, I would guess yes, and if that is the case, it makes perfect sense that you should cash out your avatar at the end of the experiment. I don't envy your task of leaving the game, but your new avatar will enjoy your wealth of in-game experience. Please post any information about the article when (not if ;) ) it is published.

Funny that you asked about the funding of the avatar. I was actually given a monthly allowance limit and then a one time "balloon payment" in order to test with.

Technically, most of the money was mine, but I did get to expense it and get it all back. Hence the contractual obligation to cash it all out.

I wonder.... could I sell the current avatars goods to the new avatar? Yes, I am sure I could sell the skills and the equipment, but that would taint the results as I am sure I would want to give myself a killer deal on all my goodies.

I have also asked for permission to publish the report here on EF in its entirety, should it not be published, but as of yet there has been no official reply.

I assure all the good people of EF and EU that when published, I will let you all know when and where to find the report.

On another note: I see that two people have voted on the far ends, and opposite of each other, on the poll. If these two people wouldn't mind, I would like to have them PM me so I may ask them some more detailed questions. Of course this would be strictly voluntary and all anonymity would be respected.

I myself started in 2005, And since then its has burnt a serious hole in my wallet.

8 From me, The Price per hour need to be reviewed. MA said it should be around $1 per hour. But recently ive been losing upto $50 per day...

Compared to just a year ago, I think EU has come a long way. I used to get pissed about something almost every day playing EU. Now it's fairly rare that some bug really pisses me off.

Seems like EU is finally maturing into a more stable product. Hopefully they can keep it that way.

Intreguing... most intreguing. I'm wondering who would want such a report. I can see it as use to MA for evaluation purposes but other than that, only investors or some kind of media. I'm guessing not TV as it doesn't sound like that kind of article so a magazine? A games magazine? Is this something we are likely to able to be able to buy and read in the UK for example? Go on give us a hint ;)

It is an American publication, but I understand that it is available worldwide and online as well. The only other information I can give you at this point is that it is a publication dedicated strictly to Window's OS based PC games and MMO's.

Hey

I would love to see the report too, and I have a suggestion that you might make a questionaire to get more opinons/reports of other players experiences.

Just a thought ..

For "switching" the avatar - you might sell everything to your new ava at peacution-prices that should be fair, because on the other hand you safe a lot of auction fees!!!

Or even better: Keep your avatar to keep your FL and just "sell" to a good friend who hold on to your items until you are "back". (after cashing out and after the report you can make new deposit on your own)

or.. you could roughly work out what how much your avatar is worth and all the items / loot you have and then just keep it all and give them the equivalent back in cash..

saves you waiting 3 months to cash out and it keeps all the skills and everything else you have gained.....:D

It would be interesting to see the article.

Well, i hope like hell it's PCGamer, i subscribe to that and would love to read your report...Hell, i'd just like to see the game advertised in such a great mag!!!:)

pretty darn good but some smaller problems ... like bugs, lootlag, noloots .. :D

Nah, I luv it! Can't help it! :shower:

Well, BlackRain already knows how much I love the EU, so my input is already said and done. (but for the record, I gave it a 7. The # was low but the description was perfect for me.)

However, as for any "switching" or "maneuvering" in order to keep his stuff, I'm guessing he has to sell his stuff under fair market situations in order not to taint the report. PEauction and even the new ingame price info is all well and good, but not always a perfect indication on what you can get.

Of what I know about BR's inventory, he's gonna get a pretty nice price (read: above current market average) on some of his items.

awwww..... shucks, John, you weren't supposed to talk about that. LOL

Wow, and wow!

I have only one question:
How much of your report will cover BIG HAIR!
Surely the masses need to know about things like this. It is most important that it be discussed. Everyone has hair, and it is one of the things that is closest to the brain, hence it is on everyone's mind. Killing monsters, mining, economy .... BAH, I say. Hair is where it's at!

Oh, I didn't forget to discuss my vote, I just don't want to. You can ask me when you see me, BR.

Voted 7.

4 marks for windowed mode
3 marks for 1152 resolution.

I dont agree with some of the decisions that have been made, but I think EU is going in the right direction. They seem to be listening more at least.

voted 7.

the way it was presented by MA is a little different than the game i actually am playing. i would hate to be a brand new player today, see that new website and then log in to see the real game. but they make land ownership and such seem so attainable, but truly that is far from the truth as can be. the inflation is out of control do to a supply strangehold on certain items thanks to MA drop rates, player entropy, and resellers. common items as manipulated every day. i can not understand MA's motviation for bleeding som many so dry, or at least that is the impression. eco aside, people shouldn't feel like they are getting nothing in return. 30% returns are absolute horseshit. now, i am sure the root causes for such a loss are greater than bad loot, but still, even at my most economic i don't see any true improvement.

i see the (L) movement as a good and bad thing. when MA was able to drop ) ped unlimited items they effected the loot pool very slightly, but the markup was only a players concern. now that (L) items are dropped, MA need to drop them with more TT, taking away potential loot and items in other drops. however, as far as crafters as conerned, the (L) movement gives them something to make that people need. . . . until the (L) bp wears out and never drops again.

basically the drop rates seem so bad that no one gets a fair shake.

but my bottom line question where is all the money going? who is taking out the most? hunters/miners/crafters that have got a real mega hit or sustainable system or is it the auction hawks, trolling the pages and buying it all up to sell right back on the market or is MA dipping deeper than they suggest? hell, i own a shop and i can't even imagine withdrawing for no good reason. i can't stop putting money in to be eaten up, how does anyone end up with enough to take out some?

1.
great idea for a thread and i as many others have already said would love to see you rresults.

2.
i think the wording of options 6 and option 7 are somewhat reversed, that said i voted 6 as i sounds more how i feel even though i would probablly rate it 7.

3.
the following judgements are from a player of EU who has only ever played one MMO ... EU.

i think that there are many things that are smaller in importantce that could be upgraded or added to make EU much more user friendly, my biggest upgrade requests would be in tems of communication both with other players (friend lists/voice comm/etc.) and with MA. i also think that the game could be much more friendly to new players in as much as you dont start off almost naked broke and without any clue as to whats going on or what to do.

I gave it an 8, simply because i really love to play this game and have been on and off since late 2003, however it is also the most expensive game I've ever played and having to wait for my next paycheck to go hunting again is just sad

Well, i hope like hell it's PCGamer, i subscribe to that and would love to read your report...Hell, i'd just like to see the game advertised in such a great mag!!!:)

I think it was reviewed by PCGamer or PCGames mag or something some years back. iirc it got a good score too (90s?) they said it was fun enough but the graphics were a bit dated or somthing

Iam pretty damm bored at the moment to be honest,

If the social interaction part of the game is removed basicaly your left with a glorified slot machine with the odds strongly stacked in favour of the house.
Inflation seems to be running on par with Zimbabwe at the mo.

Like an earlier point if youve been in the game for a few years then your laughing all the way to the bank however i feel sorry for the new players, they got more chance to gain land skills and gear than a choclate fireguard, unless you happen to be a millionare in real life.

The game favours the rich and for the rest thers not a lot left over
