Player loots $33000 in one hunt on Planet Calypso - Gamasutra

This is saying that skills and equipment affect your loot. The biggest ever loot was made using uneco equipment, this is not in agreement with MA's previous suggestion that playing with eco equipment is better.

The MA statement is about long run. If you hunt a gazillion mulmun elites with eco vs uneco equipment, you will come up ahead on the eco equipment. Besides, strikehammer is not uneco equipment.

one of the toughest monsters in the game
I know a lot of ppl hunting higher lvl mobs like THE eviscerator, eomons, dasp, warrior/drone elite etc

trying to take down a creature above my level but I had good weapons, armor.

Does this mean we are getting NEW dev notes wich actually means a damn thing!?!

has only been playing for 9 months and this is his largest loot to date
I know ppl playing for 9 years who don't even have 1/10th of that loot as top loot. I guess they are doing something SERIOUSLY WRONG

His primary weapon in the hunt was a DOA Strikehammer
My bet is that he's definatly MAXED on that weapon both hit & damage wise.
Just shows again how accurate your dev statements where or how much luck decides how your ava performs in this universe.. & this is AFAIK still a SKILL BASED game.

While it takes skill and planning to take down any creature in the game, the loot system on Planet Calypso incorporates many factors including the toughness of the prey, avatar skills, equipment, and several incidental elements.
It's not the first mulmun elite to be taken down, lol.. I was hunting these in team when I was still at 150-160 HP while I'm at 265 now.. so skills, equipment, & gear MY ASS! Luck is what determens it all. (read incidental elements)

Large loots such as this one do not affect other players' chances, and thus are always possible within the Entropia Universe system.
Yeah, I'm sure he lost 33k $ in 9 months to loot this.. Or are you saying this is paid by the companie's yearly bonus?
We do have a thing called Entropialife these days & we are NOT morons

Just my 2:twocents:

Next time you make a pressrelease like this, USE YOUR FUCKING BRAINS instead of pissing of the few players you have

Das

Edit : grats to Alan Krom, I, i no way envy to get a loot like this.. I had my share of ubers & am still performing kinda "ok'ish", I just realise what impact it has on the normal player

I do not think he has maximized any weapon except one (L) weapon but you never know in this game has an avatar that is maximized in all cases, most weapons after about 3-4 months so you never know.

The only question is how the avatar managed this to chipping in about 500k skills in 3-4 months and back then we did not have big chips max was about 9.9 ped TT per ESI.

gratz to the player but bad move by ma when are y giving me or other so called ubers that has been in game from 2003 why do we need skill for seems its dosent matter better to make a new ava maybe then we can get a decent hof not just 100 peds hofs :scratch2:

gratz to the player but bad move by MA I agree 100%, but one thing is proven for all that you apparently see if you had been here a couple of years.

This game is not eco or skill based neither on how much you invest into this game so what are we left ......:wtg:

In my imagination ther are only 2 things left how many you have on your fl from MA staff or how much "luck" as is decided that you will have. :)

Let me tell you a story for the envyus people out there.

We had weeks of DC / Server restarts before this loot happend.

People can spend alot of peds killing a big HP mob, and picture that in those weeks you got a mob down to 10 % HP, server restarts. Next time you login the mob is gone and you have to wait for a new respawn. Hence all the peds is lost. BUT, the "system" or lootius has it. And picture that this happend 3 or 4 times a day. And then get the correct number of avatars affected. So the peds that got "lost" should be a fairly high number.

Except that this is BS, people who were tracking during the server crashes know that their ammo and decay got rolled back while they kept any loot, so they did not 'loose' to the crashes.
(I know i witnessed that, but there is a thread here somewhere where others confirm that as well)

Congratulations to the fortunate one getting that loot.

I think no one but MA knowns how stuff works inside their company, to us participants it's all a guess, seeing 330k loot drop from a mob that more often drops 15/30ped just goes beyond my comprehension.

Ps. that mob isn't hard, it has allot of hp which consumes more ammo then the average mob, get a fapper and hunt it naked, as simple as that.

Do you really thing then even they know how it works? L:DL

Gratz to the big winner! This just proves its "not" a casino. I mean in my country only in a casino you can go and invest like 2$ and get 33k back. How about your countries, is it different? You can walk into bakery, buy bread for 2$ and get 33k back or only in a casino? :D

I think its ok to have loot like this but I would just like MA to admit its a casino. First of all its bad for them to lie about it lol. They constantly advertise it as a game and get people that are not gamblers who quit fast :D.

If you were to advertise it as a casino you would get a ton of gamblers here and be happy lol.

Now that im thinking about it, it would be kinda cool. You walk into that small bakery on the corner, say "One bread please". Pay the guy 2 bucks and he hits you in the head with the bread you bought (to simulate the swirlies) and says "YOU JUST WON 33k USD!"

For the thick skulls that do not understand:

Stop yelling "WHINERS!" every time someone questions some shady MA actions. Is not jealousy (I'm not in love with MA to feel betrayed or that they owe me anything), is not envy (a lot of people earning a lot more money in RL than me and I could care less and for sure the jackpot did not come from my money, in fact I took more out than I deposited due to a noob luck).

MA released a dodgy story for the gaming sites, and frankly you can find just a handful of identical articles pointing to MA website. Let's browse some comments on the massively.joystiq.com:

" played it for an afternoon. It was big and empty. Took me 10mins to kill one critter that looked like a squirrel. Ran around for a bit. Met one other person and they did not speak english. Yeah so that sums up my afternoon."

" just unistallerd it the game is not newb friendly AT ALL it requires so much fking work just to get newbgear you burn through ammo like nobodies business theres lil to no info telling new ppl what to do after a certain point and you end up burning all your money buying ammo before you can even save up it's so not worth the frustration"

"Worst game ever with so many little and annoying flaws you eventually go mad and don't even bother mentioning the loot system which is really just a casino in disguise. Plus for some reason the community will be quite rude if you mention the flaws in game."

He nailed it right, the community part.

" played this game back in 2008. As the saying goes, it takes money to make money and this takes money just to do basic things like own a weapon and shoot, ammo costs are ridiculous. You can easily put in $100 a month and be nowhere near accomplishing scratching the surface. It defines grind and dares any game to match its grind. I like the idea of the game more so than the game itself but don't take my word for it. Go see how far you get. Hell you can even deposit the normal cost of a game $60 and see how little that gets you. "

"You are joking right? It's April 1st, right?
A gamer being rewarded thousands of REAL dollars for killing some uber mob? What the heck is this?
What is this game? How does it work? Why was he given cash? Please explain."

And so on, and so on. A game like Entropia cannot survive in today's economy with the old model of a 1000 hardcore big depositors, 50 big business types and the occasional big gambler losing big while at the same time hoping for an endless stream of new players to come and lose their 20-30 bucks per month. Those new players indeed will feel frustration and why not, envy, after the initial sentiment of marvel will wear off in several weeks.

Again:

"Absolutely. I know a lot about MMO's but have heard nothing about this game. It seems pretty basic stuff to explain a little about the game, where the cash comes from, how it ends up on the mob, do other mobs drop cash, how rare this one was etc.
As it stands I now know some guy got 33,000 for killing something in a game somewhere. Hardly enlightening."

MA FAILS AT EXPLAINING THEIR OWN GAME. Their website is a mess, no info about items which could be bought in game, I'm seeing now that a 8 year old weapon Justifier MK3 had its decay info wrong on Entropedia (or was modified silently by MA).

Many have invested a lot and I understand that they feel mad when someone talk the game down, but is the player base who created MA mindset in these 10 years. They adapted to MA changes, most of them un-welcomed, instead of putting a bit of pressure on them to clean up their act.

Look at space - I will guess here, but the vast majority of players would like to travel freely to other planets, in their own ships with their own fuel. But no, MA decided to make players the victims of a handfull of teenage cretins, almost all of them scammers and exploiters, under the pretense of separating planetary market. Which is bullshit. They could come with other things - like carrying stackables only with MS as probably they want to sell those ships for big bucks. Also they could find a lot of other sources of revenue catering to people hobbies (like widespread coloring or makeup and yes, taming) instead of giving player money to types who will withdraw them out of the game every month.

If you think that after the biggest ATH in the game history, is OK to have just 1 poorly written release of the news, and with quite a confused if not damn hostile reception by the MMO players, then fine.

I congratulate Alan Akram for his win, wish he was more talkative on this board but maybe he's not mastering English well or has other personal reasons.

And I wish players would express their anger towards Traction PR, they suck at what they are doing for MA yet they have the monopoly of MA advertising it seems.

Well said Tepes.

You brought up some of the main concerns about this game and MA needs to address them if they want their community to grow.

MA FAILS AT EXPLAINING THEIR OWN GAME.

Put yourself in MA's shoes and try to explain the game without using words "gambling", "slot-machine" and "luck" :)

With their business model MA can't speak open even if they wanted to. And if they modify the model, it will be completely different game, maybe more populated but surely not RCE. We don't generate any real product inside the game, don't really increase the RL value of assets, it's a self-contained system where every gain has a complementary loss somewhere. With strategies and planning involved, you may call it rather a poker than a slot-machine, but it's still a gambling. It might not scare off potential players (even if of a specific kind), but go ahead and try to put it in press-releases without facing legal consequences. So being reticent is unfortunately the only way to go.

But we ourselves often do the same.

While mentoring or just helping new people, I usually follow one of the 2 main approaches: 1) explaining small momentary things, like how to select the most eco gear and hunt for MU, without revealing that no matter how eco you're, it's still a slow death from thousands cuts and more and more deposits are inevitable. Basically, teaching to fish without telling that the whole lake is poisoned; 2) fully explaining the grand picture, how small is the chance to become self-sustainable and how much time and money one's going to spend trying to reach that goal, how the more skilled you're the tougher and costly it become - contrary to what they usually expect, how he'll never get any close to the stats of "that guy with 150 agility" he admires, etc etc;

Needless to say that the second approach kills the mood instantly. I only do this if I see that the guy have courage and funds to embark on that path. If I'm wrong - it's a quit, either instantly or after a few days of hesitations (constant losses in the meanwhile don't help much). More often I'm wrong.

With the first approach, the guy enjoys the game for months before he realizes he's not going to quit his main job any time soon, and by that time he most likely loves the game or community too much to just abandon everything. The path that most of us who's currently around have walked in past.

It's not really the system that needs explaining, it's how the game works ie how to play it. The learning curve in this game is similar to EVE online's. Not quite as steep but it's close, and this is mostly due to MA/Planet partners failing to do some basic stuff like explaining the game, making proper noob areas that guide them via quests to new places where they can skill up more. If you compare the way you get guided around in other MMO's with EU's it's completely different. And this turns players off and makes them leave the game. The retention rate is one of the most important things a "F2P" game company has to work on and i think EU's retention is completely horrible, at least it used to be (stated in some old report) What is needed is to cut costs for new players, make the game more fun with better guides, quests and so on and for MA to make more money they need to understand how a F2P game works and how to get players to buy new stuff and the way it's done now surely don't seem to work sadly.

Its no error !!! MA has been advertising this way since .... forever! My guess they gave it to this noob because he was listed on thier chart as the highest depositor in the last year.So they see it as a good chance he will keep that ped in game and slowly loose it over time like everyone else...

Something to this: The team that got knocked off the number 1 spot on the ATH list was made up of a "new" player who started with a depo north of $15K. Hendrik spent all his depo over a less-than 9 month period on every skill chip and uber weapon/amp and armor piece he could get his hands on. He had at least one other ATH on the list before hitting the #1 ATH in a 2 man team hunt. By being on his team I was lucky enough to get a good share of what i always considered to be a HOF generated by his big spending.

By the way, our ATH was generated in the same area as this one and coincidentally on the day Rocktropia opened. PR and huge deposits and massive HP mob + spending = top ATH. I was just along for the ride, but I got $6K for my part of the damage.

I don't see Hen much since that day. He blew all his PED on even more uber gear and got totally bored of HOF'ing. As far as I know all his gear is just collecting dust in storage somewhere while he continues to make his fortune living and working in a Second Life.

Fuck off MA, loot has been shit for weeks now lol

Wow weeks only for you? I didnt have nice returns for 5 months now, lost around 10k ped on hunting atrox ambu and mobs similar xD. Consider yourself lucky lol

so... is that it..?

At first I thought the ATH was a planned PR coup by MA but now with such a lack of any coverage or interest around this, except this one pathetic and mostly spurious and misleading article, I don't see how they could have planned it. No one, literally no one could be this retarded at PR. The Taliban have better PR than this FFS.

Kinda destroy my PR theory, doesn't it? I was thinking about this from day 1, with MA financial situation they could see this ATH as a disaster if not planned. BUT still they are retarded at PR regardless, and I'm pretty sure they have ATHs under manual control... aka the BUTTON.

Today the robot event started... was at Camp Corinth for 15-20 minutes only trying to push for trade some useless stuff I'm ashamed to recognize I peddle (ok ok, were some Skildek Lanceheads I looted from puny).

Somebody at revive said "lol, 90 ped gazz" - I guess her part of the shared loot.

Got disconnected just minute later, to find out was a server restart. No more gazz in loot, people were cursing and leaving. Only the Taliban of the game remained.

PS. Taliban have excellent PR - if somehow they fail at it they keeeeel you:). Hopefully our sentiment related to them is not breaking some love-all rule on this forum.

Put yourself in MA's shoes and try to explain the game without using words "gambling", "slot-machine" and "luck" :)

Well.. they do not have to explain the loot formula, but HOW to get the loot. The article did not explained anything about the game, the link on their site does not explain much either. Fewer people will download a 11Gb+ game just to discover themselves. But yeah... hard to explain the Russian roulette going on :).

Regarding your disciple method - I always applied method 2, truth hurts but heals. Did not have many, but 2 of them I was proud they became better players than me and more successful... they left the game of course now, skill and hofs come at a cost.

It is absolutely incredible to me that a person would continue participating in a game wherein they sincerely believe the #1 ATH in history is rigged. Just amazing.

I've contacted gamasutra and they've agree'd to do a story titled "Hundreds of players LOSE 33k U.S. playing Entropia Universe!"

Who wants to be part of the story?

'Willful suspension of disbelief' - a well practiced adoption since the inception of religion. It plays on peoples desire for magic.

Unfortunately for you, your disbelief will only be satisfied when there is no more continued participation.

Sorry - I am the one who is in an unfortunate position when I'm NOT the one sitting here spending thousands of hours playing a game I believe is rigged?

No, you're right, sir. How silly of me.

Well I guess this is appropriate. We got:

1)tons of chat messages hof globals, makes newbies think everyone is profiting
2)a lot of stories how someone hit ath
3)tons of youtube videos of hofs

Well its about time someone told the truth.

Well its about time someone told the truth.

This someone who might that be?

It's doubtful anyone knows or understands how loot works apart from MA. Perhaps they should explain in detail how it all works. Perhaps then players with an open mind will be able to see and understand it all...

you don't have to understand it

the article (iirc) states that its terribly hard to hunt big mobs and that needs lots of planing, neither is true

as to the money aspect its easy
you got one person looting 33 000$
you got quite a couple of douzens spending more than 200$ a month
you got several i would consider at "higher level" who can easily spend 500$ a month

its plain figures from a gamers perspective and that what its about
no need to know the loot system for that

ie, imagine the article like
"dude loots 30 000$ of a mob in EU, but about 1000 people lost about 1000$ this year alone"
plain figures, yet a different view

naturally the things would come like "yeah, but he hunted with weapon xy", "sure, but thats a noob"
what i say to that point is easy
first of all, for the following, i have nothing against the player, i don't care if he looted 330 000 ped hof (actually i pretty much don't care what other people loot at all, i have the mindset that it doesnt bother me unless its my loot)
but to the fact
a fairly newish player (sorry, 8 months i dont consider long term in EU) with a ludicriously uneco weapon (DOA), which is my guess is not maxed for him, with a fairly low evade probably and thus fairly hefty armor cost with help of healers and whatnot, loots the highest ath to date
all of that fits the "used wrong weapon for mob", "was too low skilled for mob", "was noobish"
so I don't think any of the usual arguments for people losing lots of money has any relevance here, because technically, that guy should have bled peds and lots of it
i guess noone would have suggested or even advised him to go for that this way

so loot system discussion is fairly pointless, but actual figures could be interesting to bring out
