Whatever...change your name or not - Why should *I* have to manually edit it myself? If MA permits a name change (Which I didn't think they would do at all) then why wouldn't it change across the board? Seems silly to force players to manually make this change when a global database search and update could accomplish it for every table in the database..and every database. Thereby changing it on the HoF lists, FLs, etc.

Regardless of the me being "up on the workings of PE com's or avatar naming" it's simply being done in a slipshod, sloppy way.

In the database you have many different links and also I guess FL is build up in a way where you can manually change a nick for an avatar in your own "user-table". The system tables are equal anyway and it is only "nick" that ppl have on their own FL that counts.
An avatar has 3 names. FL for different users will not be changed anyhow.
FL is serverbased but user controlled.
Maybe you had "Dung Collector" as a nick for PS and another had "Player Killer" Others maybe had "Porn Star"
None of those will change with a name change of PS. You will have to change them manually for obvious reasons. For ppl who don't have him on FL, will not notice any difference.

Also there is some bugs, but that is another story. Example that a mob is called "auctioneer" and similar

Well if they did that, then everyone that has his name renamed to "Porn Star" and "SuperSexBunny" would then be changed to Jenna Star Mercury or whatever it was. I'm sure MA didn't do this because not everyone would have wanted the nickname that they gave to his avatar reverted back to his avatar name.

Well there's that to consider...as well as poor database design and maintenance by our friends at MA, but it you need to poke fun at me so be it.

Sure I can change my FL, and see the point and how its handled and it could very well be a client-side function, which would make sense. Still....oh whatever.

How can you be certain this isn't the case... judging by how the app is working I would guess this is the type of db setup they have... (obviously complete speculation, but fits the mold)

Friend list table...
[AVATAR_ID, FRIEND_AVATAR_ID, FRIEND_AVATAR_NAME, etc... etc...]

Now what is arguably wrong is that they are probably filling in the in the FRIEND_AVATAR_NAME at the time the friend is created and then have a method to get an avatar name for a given logged in avatar like...
(pseudo code obviously) ...

if they change the name on the FL without you knowing, you have at once an unknown person on it (you think) and might delete him/her. now, you know of the change by the forums, and can change optional, w/o the change to delete (by accident that is)

it seems that the friends list table, instead of having a foreign key relationship has the name inserted instead - not what you call a normalized relationship, but it is often done for the sake of speed
however, you would think that by now, someone would have come up with a tool ( sp ) that would make changes in all the relevant places when a need arrised .....

seems sensiable to ask MA to change the name, as it could be seen as copyright and/or offensive.

about the name not changing in the friends list, you have the ability to change the names of your contacts within your friend list and this may be stored client side so the only way for MA to change the name on everyones friend list would to realease a patch.

This is very true. The initial entry into the FL is taken from a server side database, then its stored locally. Thus allowing you to edit it and rename to whatever you want.

I´d rep you, but it is impossible here.

I am certain this is actually the reason the name on FL does not change by default...How would you like if some authority just comes around and changes your phonebook so instead "mum" it says "Giselda". For instance in your cell phone display.

How would you know your mother is Giselda now, if she did not tell you? And when she calls to you, the phone would just say "Giselda" and you did not undertsand who the *** the caller is and you would not answer. Naturally if you answer to phonecall, you´d know by voice who the caller is. But with instand messages you would not. And a complete stranger claiming she is your friend might seem a little...hmmm...psychotic.

And naturally in PE the namechange is not possible by default, so claiming that would also result your new name to be banned for harassement.

You know, it is not always possible to tell all your friends beforehand, that you are about to change your name. People might not be online.

I just wish it would be possible to send IM to people not online...same as the auction messages: the message would just appear when you finally get online. There should also be way to send multiple resipient message, like to all your friends simultaneously.
