In January my mom signed me up to a thing called something like "Overweight team" in my local hospital to help me loose weight. I weighed about.. 108 kg and I'm 172 cm tall. I have lots of muscles (I could take you down, easily :p) though and people often guessed I weighed ~85 kg.

This photo is taken in June, when I was down to about 102-103 kg.

Today I felt like comparing myself then and now. This photo was taken today:

I now weigh 93 kg, so I lost 15 and I need 13 more to feel really satisfied but I, myself, see the difference. Do you? :p

The only thing I changed about my eating habits is that I don't eat dairy anymore, no milk, no cheese, nothing like that, and more light products. I don't exercise AT ALL (hell no!), I just walk instead of taking the bus and stuff like that. I got my muscles from swimming 4 times a week for five years but I quit swimming about 3 years ago.

How did you loose weight? Did you reach your goal?

Gratz on the progress! :)

I know that can be a difficult thing to do.

gratz, the best way of losing weight is not eating, may feel crap for a while but your stomach shrinks and it becomes bearable over time

Ehm, are you serious? Not eating is probably THE WORST way to loose weight. If you don't eat your metabolism goes down since your body thinks that you are starving. When you start eating again your body doesn't react fast enough and everything you eat becomes fat on your body. That, and the fact that you may become VERY sick by not eating (dizzyness, headaches, dehydration, fainting) and you may even get anorectic (which you can DIE from).

The best thing to do if you wanna loose weight is exercise, eat smaller meals, healthier meals (no McDonalds..) and eat at regular times.

Gratz Marla - u look great!! New dressing style too. Very cool look, gotta love it

huh? for how long exactly are u supposed to .... erhm not eat?

Can u maybe make this method into a bonified diet, and we can make us some real fortune?? :deal:

gratz Marla, yes I can see the difference, good for u :)

you should try some exercise too though, like some walks etc. no need to go running or anything, walking works really well. Just eat lots of veggies, don't quit dairy products, just go for low fat ones. :)

and small meals, many times a day, like you allready said.

I walk ALOT more then I used to. It's easier to walk, not having to bear all the weight :p Well, even though I kind of like dairy I can't eat it anymore since I got allergic about a year ago. I didn't stop eating them until this summer though, didn't think it was the milk that made me sick.

And thank you :)

Well, i definitely see the difference. Keep up the hard work and you will achieve your goal. Though, i'm a little worried about the fact that you don't take anymore dairy. Milk is good for the bones and provides a good source of calcium. If you do not take any sources of calcium, i would suggest that you buy some calcium supplement pills (it's up to you).

Keep up the good work!

I'm allergic to diary so I can't drink milk and stuff like that. I do take vitamins (vitamin C (since I'm allergic to oranges and that stuff to), calcium and omega 3)

well, my weight has always been good according to the health guy...

im 1 meter and 91 centimeters tall,
and weigh about 79...

usually during summer im a little bit heavier, my "heaviest" was 84 kg's
and during winter i weigh a bit less...(havnt grown much in last 2 years) down till 75 kg's...

i dont do anything spectacular...i just take the bike to school/work instead of the buss, car, or whatever...even in bad weather.

i eat plenty...and just about anything i want.
i drink lots, and i mean lots of fluids everyday...be it milk (aprox 2 liters a day atm), plain water (1 or 2 liters), soda/other stuff (upto 5 liters)(this includes redbull and stuff)

(its an half an hour trip to work/school by bycicle... with buss it would take the same time...+ anythign within a travel distance of 1hour 15 mins i take a bike. (average speed is 20-30 km/h)

very nice work MarlaSinger!!
i ALWAYS eat like a pig. but ever since i was young, my parents forced me and my bro to do all sorts of activities... stuff like football and karate. boy was i glad they did that. that was the only thing that kept me from gaining weight. now im at uni, theres no time for all that excersize rubbish.. too much work and partying to be doing lol... boy is it all catching up with me.. i still eat the same, but i dont excersize the same anymore. ive promised myself that i'd take up all the fitness activities up again once im out of uni, but god knows what size i'll be when i get out  im 13 3/4 st now.. used to be like 11-12ish before i started putting on weight.

i had better get to it eh. cheers marla, uve got me all motivated into losing some weight

:)

Marla, never eat more calories than your body burns off in a 24 hour period.

Also never assume your unfit, ive been the same weight for some years, but i smoke to much, so even if i appear slimmer than you.. doesnt meant im fitter.

Junk food- I dont have a sweet tooth, no cholcolate in my house, but im no saint, cheese/beer is my downfall :D

When hungry, wait for dinner, never snack.

Swimming is marvelous, but does build muscle, so the scales may be deceptive.. Pick an excersise that makes you out of breath, this will help your heart and burn fat.

Finally, get your thiroid checked, maybe its underactive.

Over the years I've gotten a little heavier than I like to be, but I'm able to make progress by doing small things sustained over a long time rather than big things. A couple things I do are:

If I go for fast food and order a hamburger, I don't get fries.

I drink water instead of soft drinks. (Saves a lot of money, too)

I eat the same things I always have, but I make the portions smaller.

If I feel like desert, I have it, but a smaller portion. This seems to work because the main meal portions are already smaller so it's still a net reduction in food comsumption.

Again, great news on your progress. Best of luck on that! :)

I know you are trying to help, but hamburgers are just disgusting mate, with or without fries.

Ok, its not just about weight here, you also need fibre/minerals/vitamins etc in your diet.. a buger is nothing but pure fat that will clog up your ateries/bowls (bowl cancer kills.. eat bananas, trust me on this)

Water over soft-drinks is definately the way to go, I once was addicted to coke, no more.. its habitual, keep a bottle of water by your side instead.

Losing weight is a fairly simple thing on paper. Burn an extra 500 calories a week and you lose 1lb a week. The healthy suggested rate of losing weight is 1-3lbs a week depending on how overweight one is. It all starts with a healthy lifestyle, yes not a diet. Remember you can cheat once a week without feeling remorse. Walking is a better workout than most give credit for. Just try to walk for more than 30 mins. Musle burns more calories than fat, so toning up makes your body start working in your favor.

It sounds simple because it really is simple. The rest is a mental game. Low fat is not always the way to go. Fat tells our mind we are full and we tend to eat less because of that. Alot of people end up eating more calories because of low fat food and gain more weight. Switch to good calories and good fats.

Here is a good website for helping beginers track their progress towards a healthy lifestyle. Lots of good information on there. Hope this helps someone.
Keep up the good work. Marla :D

Looking good Marla, there's a definite difference! And nice camera in the second pic :D

From between the age of 15 and 21 I was ill and unable to exercise at all, so in that time I put on quite a lot of weight. Unfortunately no matter who you are if you can't exercise for six years your weight will suffer :( Since about march of this year my health has been improving dramatically so I've been able to start losing weight. In the past four months I have lost about 12kg. I've lost about 18kg or so of fat though, as after so much inactivity I lost my muscle mass so my weight has increased from the new muscles :dunce:

I've mostly just been cycling when I can and eating better. Now that I can actually exercise my appetite has become a lot healthier - I no longer want to just eat a couple of big meals a day or comfort-eat, my body physically wants to just a little bit a few times a day which is great!

I have a broad shouldered, stocky frame so I'm never going to be a lightweight but with my current weight loss I'm 193cm and 107kg.

Good luck with getting to your target weight!

Actually no, if you drink a lot of diet tea (like those chinese recipies for losing weight) and you also get some fiber pills, you should be fine.
Everytime summers comes around I begin eating only salads and yogurt and dring a lot of that tea + excersizing a lot (I just take my dog to the park near me and run like crazy :D ) and guess what: I not only lose weight fast and efficient, but I gain a good tonus and I feel much better. My mother allways cooks this amazing sarmale during the winter holydays and they are acumulating on my butt all the time lol. So when the winter is over a vegetable and fruit + yogurt diet is in order.
I hope this helps someone.

And omfg are u crazy ?????
thats like the worse thing EVER..... coz if u stop eating and like only drink water and when u finaly have lost does 10 kg and think that now i cant start eat again coz i lost weight then u will be surprised coz u will gain more weigth then u have lost..... :wise:

I have to disagree with that, a 3 day fast DOES shrink the stomach a bit, making dieting easier, however nobody should fast for longer than this, the aim isnt to lose weight but to shrink the stomach.

I lost 7 stone nearly a decade ago (uk weights, 1 st=14 lbs), but during a very stressful time a few years later, gained all the weight id lost, plus much more. Currently losing weight again, lost a couple of stone and now weight 17st.

If you cant drink milk, soya milk is a good substitute, but use the apple juice sweetened version (unsweetened tasted awful). Cereals such as kellogs all-bran are good for fibre, and make sure your eating enough protein ( see http://www.annecollins.com/dieting/protein-rda.htm ) or you will lose muscle rather than fat. Also make sure supplements contain all the minerals not just vitamins. Udo's oil is also good for a mix of omega 3/6/9 efa's.

Weighing scales that measure your body fat percentage are very usefull too as you know whether you are losing fat or muscle/water.

Also try to drink at least 2 litres of water/low cal diet drinks such as cola (except diet coca-cola, - see www.killercoke.org ) a day.

Don't misunderstand: I'm not recommending hamburgers, but I am say that if you make that choice, that you can make it a little better by leaving off the fries.

Bought a Payne Implanter, ESI, extracted my overweight skills, bought some athletic implants. Went to Akoz, and he did the finishing touch..

But now seriously, to loose weight, instead of reading this forum and playing PE you could go to the gym....

Uh well thats a very useless and rude comment. Maby she has been to the gym twice today for all you know.

well moser i see your concern for the shitty comment but marla did say she doesnt work out at all on the first page.
but a shitty comment was rather rude, unneeded and uncouth (SP?)

I suffered with my weight for a long while before the military *sry i'm american so this is standard us measurements*

5"3 3/4
*always 1/4in short of 5'4 lol
195lbs *in the past 4 weeks i've lost around 8 pounds*

the thing that i have worked out *asided from running 3 times a week over 3 miles*
eat frequently in small portions.
3 times a day is the minimum.
most dieticians recommend a bit of meat or fruit up to 8 times a day
i have found that 5 times a day is manageable.
maybe an apple, nuts, grapes, turkey sandwich (just 1 slice of bread, piece of turkey, mustard-fold the bread in half. called a pocket sandwich*

basically small things several times a day and usually one normal/big meal
like a steak and potato for dinner.

small things that have helped me. I dont eat junkfood, rarely eat take out food, no more pop(soda, coke w/e you call it)
and only on occasion drink energy drinks.
mainly around 1-1 1/2 gallons of water a day.
its alot but easy to do. instead of eating. drink half a bottle of water quickly
when hungry have a soup and sandwich. the water content will fill you instead of fats. although its good to watch sodium in soups

sry for the slight ramble, but you have already got the ball rolling.
initiating the change is the hardest part. congratulations on the progress Marla.

keep up the good work hun. It is hard, and it does suck, but you will love yourself afterwards. *i'm sure you love yourself now, but you will feel better and healthier.

Our problem is that we usually eat more than we need and we dont make physical effort. Sitting on a chair playing PE while drinking a can of beer(which, btw, is my favourite :D ) and eating chips (see the badass from South Park lol) is a very safe way to get fat. If you, however combine that with some excersise and healty food ( crude vegetables and fruits are the best) you shouldnt have any concern. I myself hate doing excersises, but if you do some fun physical effort like swimming or playing voleyball or whatever (or making your dog running after you) its great.
But it is true that some people cannot lose weight easily because of some health problems and I have heard of a diet for them consisting in eating only germinated wheat and drinking distilled water. I know that is a very difficult task to accomplish and temptations are everywhere, but I know people in RL that did it and now they are completely different people.
Being overweight is unesthetical, true, but most important of all, is unhealthy and creates a lot of problems with age.

Fasen va duktig du e marla ;)
Stay away from the chips, coke and candy and ull be just fine :)

Nice one Viper, and your water/food intake closely mirrors mine, although I dont tough energy drinks, the uk versions have way too much caffeine than i can handle.. Try a smoothie instead, all natural ingredients (fruit)

Its a nice sub if one isnt a big fruit eater.

Bread contains alot of salt, so does the marg/butter you add to it, salt pushes the blood pressure up, which causes your heart to work harder (not in a good way) that will eventually damage it, and cause heart disease.
Check the ingredients of your loaf, maybe worth spending a few pence/cents more to buy a low salt one, same with the butter, buy unsalted (this goes for all food)
The body does need salt, but like all food, its about moderation.

Like I mentioned before, being slim doesnt mean you are fit.

Another tip; The acid levels in ones stomach is perfectly balanced to digest the food you intake. Dont finish a meal then drink a pint of water, this dilutes the process, wait 30 minutes.

Goldpython, I do understand, sorry if i came across the wrong way, and good for you.. life wld be dull if we cut out everything we enjoyed from time to time.

p.s If I was too fast for 3 days, i know for sure I wld faint with-in 24 hours, this isnt recommended for those that drive kids to school. This sort of advice wld only maybe be relevant under strickly controlled medical supervision.. in extreme cases.

right fasting is not a good thing for the body. fasting is often tied with religious activities. or in extreme cases of needing to lose weight like for a weigh in of sporting events or something like that. and those athletes are closely monitored by specialists. and typically it is still recommend against.

and fasting for weight lose is still only a temporary/dangerous fix.

lol at dj. i drink the energy drinks for the caffiene.
i love caffiene. I used to drink MD and Bawls energy drink almost exclusively.
i love fruit smoothies. i make them alot at home. and they are really good w/ everclear (190 proof grain alcohol lol)
but drinking isnt good for your body either.
sour mash whiskey killed my metabolism (8 oz Jack Daniel's and 4 oz Mountain Dew, every evening while playing video games and not working out lol)
not a recommended thing to do.
however i am glad i was able to break that habit to. i also stopped smoking. this also added to my cravings for food.
biggest recommendation for curbing hunger/building an eating schedule is to chew sugar free gum or drink water.
and yes hesitate on water consumption after eating. you will build your metabolism/allow better digestion by waiting.

Some advises:

The body fat cells live for a very very looong time.
This means once you overfeed and increase the number of them in your body it will take more than 20-40 years before they die = don't expect them ever to disapear = solution => keep them with low supply and high demands which eventually will make them shrink their volume and increase their disaperance.

Another bad news
if you fast your body will try to lower the metabolism => it will create stimulus for the reproduction of the fat cells => next time you'll eat you body will storage the energy more efficiently => you'll get fat more efficiently.

Possible solutions:
Yes, walking is very good start indeed, remember even if your body has a nice muscular mass the joints are under very stressfull conditions therefore it is wise to make the muscles that protect them stronger before entering some more violent physical activity.
That is the reason why swiming is one of the best activities to start with more demanding physical activities since you relative weight is very small and you won't stress the articular surfaces of the joints so much
In case you don't know that is one of the worst parts of the body to get a lesion since they are very slow to regenerate (takes many months) and worse yet is that sometimes imunologic processes start there that prevent any further rehabilitation and creates a very painfull lifelong disability.
And don't make this stop you because if you don't exercise the muscle will certainly atrophy and you'll get articular pain very soon in life.

Yes, changing diet, easier to say that to do.
I won't comment on how to do it since lots of literature is probably already known of you all, just remember if you don't feed your body the first things that will be consumed are the muscles not the fat, and the muscles won't regenerate unless stimulated unlike the fat.
So trying to loose more than 1 pound per week just on diet is very unwise.

And improving your looks doesn't only makes you feel better it also is better for your physical health.
And as side note:
Better looks also may grant you access to one of the most pleasurable calorie spending activities known to human :D

And something to take your mind out off food that I read and works is the following:
Raw Carrots
They don't taste bad.
Don't have lots of calories
Are easy to transport and storage.
Are relatively cheap.

And take a long time to chew properly (which allows some people for their lazy saciety brainsteam center to realize that you've already eaten enough -> normal people it takes 20-30 minutes, so be sure to give it time)
This advise helps most people to tolerate better a "healthy diet".
Remember we have primitive bodies and not long ago your ancestors die of denutrition so expect your body to storage and save for worst days to come.

Havent posted in ages, but weightloss is somethng i take very serious on. And way to go Marla for pulling it off! :) Now when you have come thus far and can see the light in the end of the tunnel it will get abit easier. So, those last 12 kgs will be a walk in the park for you, litteraly!

I myself have struggled many years with my overweight, and finally i succeeded. Now, 10 months later, im 45kgs lighter, and its the best feeling ive had in.. forever. Feel as if im a bottomless source of energy, im not, but still. ;) I think that to succeed you shouldent go so much after others advices, even tho those ive read aer good, dont get me wrong. :) I basicly got told by a dietists that, stop with everything thats i good, and that sinks your motivation to the floor. Find your way! The way that works, and feels good, for you.

Guess i can sare what i did. :) I started light, by walking 30 mins every other day, also doing some situps. And almost completely stop eating/drinking things with alot of sugar, candy soda ect. Also no junk food whatsoever. Kept that up, incresing the length of my walk, lifting weight at home, more situps. Thats how i removed my first 25kgs. Then i stepped it up alittle, starting at a gym while still continuing with the walks. Been at the gym 3 days a week, sometimes alittle bit more, since start of june, and lost another 20kg, and gained some muscles too. :)
So this was how I did it, and it worked for me. Of course it was tough, but not as bad as one could think. Nowdays i eat some candy ones a week, and it doesnt hurt the weightloss at all. But i never drink soda, and dont miss it one bit!

Marla, congrats on your "loss"! :)
