holy fucking shit. read this one. seems chinese electronic crap may have viruses installed in their software.
It's the digital equivalent of the recent series of tainted products traced to China, including toxic toothpaste, poisonous pet food and toy trains coated in lead paint.

perhaps this thread should be in security? i dont know. but you need to read this.

Jerry Askew, a Los Angeles computer consultant, bought a Uniek digital picture frame to surprise his 81-year-old mother for her birthday. But when he added family photos, it tried to unload a few surprises of its own.

When he plugged the frame into his Windows PC, his antivirus program alerted him to a threat. The $50 frame, built in China and bought at Target, was infected with four viruses, including one that steals passwords.

Nice find. Bad news.

I read that a few hours ago. Amazing lack of quality control in those plants.

More unfounded anti-Chinese propaganda thrust upon us by the American media, woohoo :yay:

Years ago i bought some cheap blank 1.44 diskettes.
But they wern't blank at all.
They all had the "WelcomB" virus on them, and they were fresh out
of the box!

ahhh well, were all lookin forward to that chinese planet tho,
teleporting to it guarantees uploading 234908309 viruses to your machine then :rolleyes:

u might be right but would u take the risk ?

Unless you want to die instantly by your own hand you'll have to take risks.

The normal things you do with a high risk are commonly accepted - like crashing a car (or be driven over by one), industrial food, smoking, alcohol, medication, environmental pollution, peak oil, airplane traveling, getting stung by a moskito while in holiday some thousand KM away from home or murdered by the jelous husband, entering a hospital (both as guest or patient), loosing while playing the lottery, backdoors in windows etc.

For this stuff we're freely willing to eg. pay the price of mobility.

But there are some worth a newspaper headline and they all have only a very slim to nil chance of hitting you - like terrorism (with or without airplanes), winning a lottery... or chinese equipment with spyware included.

So please get real.

i expect you mean china by "those", but its all over the world. anywhere you employ cheap labour there is scope for corruption and if you make a product the locals cant afford there's incentive and less moral objection. im pretty certain i heard of this years ago with the driver software for a camera or somthing.

i wouldnt say unfounded at all. Im watching a series about counterfeit goods, everything from nike trainers, to gucci bags, to viagra and even proper medical pharmacueticals. the Chinese themselves reckon some staggering number (i dont recall it) die from dodgy drugs on the market there, so they are taking it quite seriously. the problem is basically poor security and corruption at the plants in China. The multi-nations involved dont want to talk about it or admit theres a problem, because they dont want to upset the Chinese. they know its happening and also know that most of the "counterfeit" product is probably coming out of their own factories. they'd rather target the middle men and street hawkers.

meanwhile the goods we purcahse in the shops in the west have never been cheaper while our financial markets demand increased revenue growth every quater from the manufacturers. it really is all our own fault at the end of the day.

CNN article said:
..."It's like if you pick up a gun you've never seen before. Before you pull the trigger, you'd probably check the chamber," said Joe Telafici, vice president of operations of McAfee Avert Labs, the security software maker's threat-research arm....

What a marvelous analogy...only in America :D

The news is not sooo new.

But what do you expect?

1) Outsourcing manufacturing in countries who are not just far away, but also where people are working for like 200 usd per month, this making every single worker there very sensible to corruption.
2) Having NO real control over the manufacturing process, especially not in the detail
3) Different mentality.
4) Outsourcing technology is just the cherry on top. Did you saw what happens to the transrapid of germany? They wanted to contruct it there. In the end, the deal was way less profitable than expected and as "bonus", the chinese presented their "new train", which was a 1 to 1 copy.

Many many countries and many companies who tried to access (vulgo: exploit) the chinese market returned with a bloody nose, loss of technology, market share and reputation. Only very few "succeed" in that market.

Lets be realisitic
Best is to not try to enter that market, at most try to exploit it, but be very careful. Every investment, also buying, just leads them to be stronger in many sense and ultimately kicking us the butt.

This is pure cyber terrorism.

Not long ago a certain model of a seagate (i think?) portable hard-disk also contained a trojan that was designed to steal login details for WoW and other online games.

Well said, paranoia is one of the fastest spreading viruses.
Isn't that why we buy AV software ? lol .....this in the wrong section

i made my screen out of a old fish tank and some crystals.
