I listened to the interview and the MA person for the question will we have to redo our avatars says i quote:
"I dont know, maybe .... smth smth smth about textures being higher res ... we are stil ldebating ... bla bla bla ... it will be optional"
So i think he just wasnt sure and i stick with what MA said during 9.0
