The newfound exoplanet, a so-called "super-Earth" called HD 40307g, is located inside its host star's habitable zone, a just-right range of distances where liquid water may exist on a world's surface. And the planet lies a mere 42 light-years away from Earth, meaning that future telescopes might be able to image it directly, researchers said.

Awesome. :yay:

And they probably will try to suck in Earth population instead of developing their own userbase :wise:

I don't care if their hell is mineable!

"... a mere 42 light years away..."

Yeah, you try walking that far, then call it "mere" again... cocky bastard.

Compared to the distances that astronomers investigate 42 light years is just around the corner.

Quote from Newscientist.com

Reimer and colleagues studied 150 blazars from more than 1000 spotted by the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. The team chose targets between 0.4 billion and 9.5 billion light years distant.

Would take just over 10 years in a Quad-Wing :silly2:

(assuming au means the same distance in EU and IRL)

Then factor in relativity for traveling 4 times the speed of light, probably feel like a week to the pilot. Sign me up :)

Not to worry. Space is pvp lootable.. with no revive!! ;)

As Einstein said, "It's all relative my dear Watson"

Maybe Crone can actually find aurli there...

Yeah right

Just look how much it costed to build a half decent instalation in the south pole research area.

Then remember that although Earth is on the region that should support life

500 million year ago (yes there was life on Earth but it almost all microscopic organisms)
(which are to blame for the

Intertropical regions covered by mile deep glaciers.

Due to their consumption of green house gas taking it out of the atmosphere and puting in on rocks).

If seen by todays humans a big ball of ice

(and if it wasn't for the moon which prevents Earth from tilting more frequently it would probably been the entire planet).

A planet able to hold life is a very precious and rare thing.

A planet able to hold life is a very precious and rare thing.

Only if you make the (possibly faulty) assumption that all life and possible life in the Universe requires the same things that Earth life do. Considering even Earth has creatures that can survive extreme heat/cold, massive radiation levels and many other conditions that would kill or severely damage a human...

It is far too common that people (even experts) assume life would be the same as on Earth. For all we know, they could look like manta rays and "swim" around in the gas clouds of Jupiter. Of course, we also do not have any possibility to know the level of evolution in any potential aliens... They could be microbes, or like we were a few 100 years ago, or even so advanced they would view us like little more than funny looking animals.
